PHILADELPHIA (PIX11)— They were just trying to get a cheesesteak in Philly, but what some New York Ranger fans got instead was a beatdown by Philadelphia Flyers fans. Now, though, two police departments are investigating the case, in part because the most badly injured victim is himself in law enforcement.
The scene on the sidewalk and in the street outside Geno's Cheesesteaks, a Philadelphia institution, on Monday night after the Winter Classic Hockey Game, is what's usually seen on the ice: guys in hockey jerseys pummeling one another mercilessly. Instead, it was at least three Philadelphia Flyers fans taking out their anger on three Rangers fans after the Flyers' 3-2 loss.
Somebody captured the attack on camera and submitted the video to police, and now the fate the brawlers face is far worse than a penalty box.
"I was stunned, absolutely stunned," Robert Hubner said about watching the video, which has gone viral. "Nobody deserves to be treated like that." He should know. He's the director of the Woodbridge, New Jersey police department, and is the boss of the Rangers fan who sustained the worst injuries, Neal Auricchio.
Not only is Auricchio a 4-year veteran of the Woodbridge Police Department, he trains other officers in field tactics and is a Marine Corps veteran, who was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained during two tours in Iraq.
At his home in Colonia, a police patrol has been posted to keep reporters away from Officer Auricchio who, Director Hubner said, does not wish to make any public comments. Hubner added that Aurecchio had to get stitches around one of his eyes and the other is swelled shut.
Aurecchio's son, who was also beaten up, is hurt but okay, and so is another friend who was with them outside of Geno's Monday night.
There is currently nobody under arrest for the crime, but Flyers fan Edward Neary posted on a hockey fan site, "It was me and my friends, do something about it... How dumb do I look knocking someone out pretty sure they look dumb eatin concrete.
Neary is now being interviewed by Philadelphia police, even though he later posted, "I was 100% joking everyone. never even left ne philadelphia."
Whether or not that's true, investigators will figure out. They know , based on witness information, that the perpetrators paid a squeegee man who was on the scene to spray window cleaner on the men who boldly wore Rangers jerseys in the middle of a large, loyal Philadelphia crowd.
"You should be able to be a fan wherever you are," Director Hubner said, adding this advice for the men who carried out the attack: "At this point, they should turn themselves in, because the police are going to get them anyway."
