Worked out fine because most people bought the more expensive version until the arcade(and internal storage) came out.

Weren't a whole lot of people buying the expensive 360 memory options, some of the old NPD threads have accessory sales in them.

It would matter.

360 and PS3 were around equally powerfull with the 360 having the better GPU und a slightly better memory solution while the PS 3 had the better CPU.

But lets say Xbox 720 will only have the rumored 2GB of RAM and PS4 will go with 3 or 4GB, that would give Sony a significant advantage. Digital Foundry could be shut down because they wouldn`t be needed anymore; even lazy devs couldn`t mess up with that much more memory to play around.

PS4 versions would win out. That wouldn`t be a 360/PS3 situation.
 
Next gen will be fun. Anyway, never believe in early rumors. Not only are they usually wrong in itself, those reporting them never understand them to begin with.

Nintendo is using a blu ray drive without paying for a movie playing license for the Wii U (like they used a bog standard DL dvd drive in the Wii but didn't pay the movie playback license to save dough).

Microsoft will be using a blu ray drive too, though I bet they'll pay the movie playing license.

It would be like PS2 versus Xbox. Cross-platform titles looked similar enough but usually had better AA, textures, geometry and shader effects.

You also had some "wow" titles that had more resemblance to next-gen stuff and only worked on Xbox, like Halo, Black, and Doom 3. I guess those are kind of comparable to PS3 having exclusive graphical powerhouses like Uncharted and Killzone?

thank god Sony has all those studios...and I believe MS started funding new studios as well, but besides that one team, i think the others are for Kinect like games...but at least they will have their own look.

Not even close.

While Uncharted, Gow3 and such are amazing-looking title, and probably the best for consoles, the 360 is capable of similar achievements. Look at Gears 3 or even games like Banjo N&B.

There was nothing on ps2 that could even get close to NG2, Halo, Doom 3, HL2, etc.
 
I was happy that the PS3 and Xbox 360 ended up roughly the same, power-wise.

Even the best looking PS3 exclusives never felt a generation beyond the 360 to me. With a handful of original Xbox games it really did feel significantly beyond the PS2. Chaos Theory looked nuts, and hell Soul Calibur 2 was 720p at 60fps!

Sort of, but I wouldn't say the best-looking PS3 games are significantly better looking than stuff like Gears and cross-platform titles such as Arkham City.

Microsoft wants Xbox to be your ultimate entertainment box in the living room. No way will the leave out playing BluRay movies. That would be beyond stupid.
(Not that they haven't made many stupid decisions in the past, though)
 
Whatever happened to those new discs with hundreds of gigs that were supposed to be compatible with existing BD drives? Those would be sweet.

The console should be balanced, but I hope they go with a powerful GPU this time. It would be nice to see someone really push the bar specs wise, at least, the leap should be big enough.

I doubt even NP would go that far. They'd probably say it matches the other two or something to that tune.
 
Suddenly I'm reminded of the run up to the PS3 launch.

1080p 120fps to two displays for all!

But seriously, I'm fully expecting the same bullshit and bluster from those waiting to release towards those who already have. That goes for (likely) 720 vs Wii U and PS4 vs 720.
 
So it means that we need to have 3 jobs now to pay for the console with all the economy recession and all, good luck to that Sony...
 
MORE POWERFUL != Easier to develop for.


Personally, the one that will straddle that fine line of being really powerful and easy to develop for will win that next gen.

Hyped for e3.
 
The power to fun ratio is very important in home video game consoles. PS4 has a 50/50 shot of being more fun than the next Xbox.
 
I'm not sure it's going to matter which is the most powerful. It's probably going to be very difficult and take a massive budget to actually max out any of the next gen consoles i would think.
