From the Opta twitter: Scholes 71 passes, 97% completion, more than any City player all game. I thought he looked tidier than some of you are giving him credit for, sure gave that goal away but his cool passing helped keep off a 3rd, looked like half that United team was ready to panic.

Through his own fault. Having 10 man isn't an excuse for playing poorly and conceding goals, just as it wasn't at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

Well I don't know if it was Kompany's fault - I think I'd lay the blame on Chris Foy for that one. And City played 80 minutes with 10 and lost by 1 goal. United played 40 with 10 and lost by 5. Just saying.

So is there no streams for the Chelsea game?

But you're my stream guy!

I think people so heavily applauding City are already forgetting the first half to some extent. They were all over the place, and certainly not the dogged, hard-working side that's become the "story".
Perhaps, but they had 10 men.

They game back with such fight. Sure, United were shit and let them back in, but they capitalised. If you give them a chance they've showed they can and will be there to pounce.

It's so commendable and a quality all the best sides have, one United have had for years.

That was just not good enough. It should have been a turning point in our season, City if anything will be more confident in themselves than they were before.

I think Lindegaard was at fault for Citys second goal.

He should have held the shot or at least have patted it to the side of the goal.

He put it straight in front of Aguero instead.

We really miss Vidic.

Evra and Ferdinand still have the class they once hand, but they're dopey, they make basic mistakes and allow pressure to come onto us. A couple of seasons back, our defence was so rock solid it absorbed untold amounts of pressure.

Just generally across the pitch however, there are players who become flustered. The forward players, as they tend to be, are composed and assured.

But, the keepers, Rio, Evra, Jones and the whole of the CM is very nervous and folds easily.

Really glad Smalling is back he is a really great player in the making.

Jones looks extremely shaky and I'm not sure why Ferguson (I assume) is making him to push up so often and leave gaping holes in our back line. Lindegaard seems to have picked up de Gea's lack of confidence.

Rooney makes excellent runs and positions himself so well and yet gets absolutely no service at all from our central midfield.

Have you actually seen him play or are you just talking because of his nickname and size? According to everyone I have heard about him, he's much more of a winger than forward and that is what he has also looked like the few times I have seen Porto.

As a Porto fan I can say that he is more a winger than a forward, he plays a lot better on the wing because he his quick and very strong. But just let him be here with us ;) or pay us a lot of money ok? XD

he was at old trafford in 08 when porto drew 2-2 there and caused vidic and ferdinand problems with long balls the whole 90 mins both legs. he out muscled vidic a number of times. who told you he is more of winger? he might have to drop back more recently, i dont know. but he was fantastic playing as a lone striker against united

Nailed it. They were more United than United has been almost the whole season.

And yes they did fell apart in the first half after going three goals down (credit to Aguero who continued to fight on) but they really came at us after the half time break, presumably due to Macini's dressing room actions. Once again, very United-esque.

Well everyone and that is what he looked more like whenever I have seen them too, but also just the ones who follows the Portuguese league in here :

He plays much better on the wings. They had him playing a central position yesterday against us which is why he was much easier to close down.

They should be kicking themselves for conceding 3 in the first half as well as applauding their second half comeback though.

Confidence and form is massively overrated in sport, the next game against city after losing 6-1 at home to them and we beat them away. Swings in form happen all the time. The more pertinent fact to the title run in in my opinion is that City won't have any FA cup matches filling their schedule.

City have two injuries, we have 9 though... we had to get scholes back from retirement. Everybody knows the problem. Lack of a world class midfield, and fragile defence at the moment, [keeper included]. And we still knocked out city from the FA Cup. Who saw that coming eh?

Credit where it is due, fergie pulled another one out the bag.

Well everyone and that is what he looked more like whenever I have seen them too, but also just the ones who follows the Portuguese league in here :

i guess he plays on the wings now. he was holding up play on a 451 back in the champions league and was fantastic. if he can play on the wing and cross too that just makes him more valuable.

Even in that game he play on the wings. He's currently playing in the middle because we have no good options for that position but he loses some of his qualities. Hulk is a player who needs space and plays better with space because of his speed.

I don't think Scholes was quite as bad as I was making him out to be.

He recycled possession well and some of his passing was crisp. He was definitely at fault for Citys 2nd goal though.

He can still do a job for United against the weaker teams.

I think he'll have to play a few full 90min games before we can tell what level he's actually at.

I'm not expecting brilliance. He retired because he wasn't able to put in the great performances like he did when he was younger.

I felt very sorry for Man City, they were the better side for large parts of the match and the Kompany red card was VERY harsh. The worst that result should have been for City was a draw.

Since Gordon Strachan's in the studio today, one of my favourite quotes:

Reporter: "Gordon, can we have a quick word please?"
Strachan: "Velocity." *walks off*

hulk would do well, he would be more similar to drogba because of his size

I watched him play last night. There's a hint of Drogba in his finishing, but his play style reminds me more of Aguero. He has both the pace and strength.

He looks like a force of nature when he starts charging through players.

Evra is our fucking captain. Of course we lack leadership. We haven't had any since Keane left.

Bit of an exaggeration here. Vidic is our club captain, and you can see we're really missing him. He sets a great example on the pitch and instils amazing confidence. And don't forget the huge loss of VDS to retirement last summer.

Bringing on Scholes was a disastrous move in two ways:

1. He's not ready for this type of match. He pretty much gave a way a fucking goal and could've caused more damage.

2. It forced Giggs to the wing who was utterly ineffective and didn't have the legs for the counter. We nullified our left side of midfield.

Agreed. Indicative of a weird backing-off we've seemed to become accustomed to this season. Feels like we're missing our ruthless instinct these days. Scholes seemed to gel into the pace of things as the half wore on, though. Fergie a little too optimistic putting him on right then.

I don't see how you can even judge Scholes. He had so much time and space when he came on. It sounds strange but it was an easy game really, hardly ever put under any pressure. Misplaced one or two passes.

When he plays a whole game, or starts a game...then we'll be able to see whether he has regressed massively or not. But it's not like Scholes was at his best before he retired, there were many games in which he was a passenger himself.

Scholes should not be back simple as. Great to see and I love the guy, but he retired at the right time and it should have stayed that way.

Bit disappointed in City and Mancini at the end. Fair enough they were down to 10 men so it can be tough but where was the big push in the last 5 minutes to try and get the equaliser?

It's tough to make a big push when the other team is playing keep ball against a team that has been playing with 10 men for 75 minutes.

Don't think it's being filmed at all. Booooo!

im surprised porto is still able to hold on to him. i thought he would be headed for spain in the summer of 09 after his performance in that years champions league

I think people are judging the substitution rather than the player himself. At least I hope they are.

Mancini shouldn't have taken out Silva even if they were losing 0-3, He is City's only creative player. At 2-3, City didn't know wtf to do with the ball.

Oh and Nasri is shit.

Lump it into our box. It almost worked.

At those moments, against a panicked defence, the Allardyce philosophy makes sense.

Nope. Scholes was poor more often than he was brilliant in the last two to three seasons. After six months away from the game, all he can do is add numbers to our midfield but not the quality we desperately need.

How is a Chelsea match not on tv in 2012? All I can find are audio feeds. I mean I've found streams for Qatar's league for fuck's sake.

Can a Portuguese league fan who can read Portuguese better than me please tell me whats going on with BWin and the League. If I'm reading A Bola right, then soccer is currently in risk. What the hell is going on?

Posotives out of todays games apart from the win were, Rooney was back close to his best along with valencia. Smalling was brilliant imo, did very well against Aguero and Welbeck should start most games with Rooney from now on.

Negatives were the keeper, had a meh game, can't believe we didn't score more that 3 so it was disappointing, credit to city though, they played well with 10 men. Good to see scholes back although he was at fault for the 2nd goal. Jones was pretty bad today and Evra who's been playing shit since the CL final.

We need a midfielder who can control the game, would have been ideal in the 2nd half.

Just ITV online that has no commentary? Or ITV in general? Wish they'd give us the option to turn commentary off and just have crowd noise, like BBC used to do.

I haven't heard anything about that and I don't read the benfica newspaper (aka abola). But there's no reason for concerns about that matter. I haven't heard anything about it.

Guardian's five points about the game are spot on.

Doesn't make up for the shite they've published in the week, but it's all right.

Feels right to be posting in t'football thread with a flat cap avatar.

Is anyone else astounded at how poor Nasri was. I know it's his 1st season at a new club but he went missing today for large parts of the game.

This isn't the first time he's done that this season either. He should be playing much better than he actually is.
