Feels like it's trying a bit too hard to be "horror". The beginning, the OP, and the random cuts to doll faces are the worst offenders in this regard; in the later part, the direction settled down. The characters are hard to care about; the protagonist lacks a strong personality and everyone else is intent on acting mysterious. Atmosphere is pretty good if unremittingly gloomy. The visual style is acceptable: like Hanasaku Iroha, it features polished background art and slightly but not overly awkward CG; unlike Hanasaku Iroha, the character designs aren't good. The ED was simple but effective; a gently eerie note to go out on.

I'm still not feeling it, but I'll give it a couple more episodes.

I somehow watched Natsume without realizing that I was watching the 4th season of something right away. When it started though I began thinking that it seemed similar to another anime I meant to watch at some point, but hadn't. Things started becoming very odd.

It was odd to me that the opening showed him as a kid That characters kind of got introduced as though they had already been, fully animated but not fully shown flashbacks, and the lack of an exposition of a show that is starting for the first time.

I got caught up in the roundcats, and this happened.

So is it actually scary or not really? Didnt want to watch if it was truly frightening, cant handle it.

It's almost as if you are implying that Iroha's flat-faced character designs are good. Mel Kishida isn't a competent artist and completely ditching his shitty style was the best thing Sora no Woto could have done; it's a shame PA Works didn't have enough sense to do the same with his Iroha stuff.

sarcasm?

Sora no Woto looks like cheap K-on rip-off . This is now a good thing?

Did you watch the whole of Neon Genesis Evangelion in 24 hours?

Did you look like this afterwards?

OMG.jpg

Maybe you watched End of Evangelion shortly after that and you looked like this?

Need a remedy? Then look no further than Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann!!

I'm starting to think there's something wrong with you. Surely one body can't handle that amount of mood swings.

I was wondering if you would show up. I'll just say I have different artistic tastes from you and leave it at that.

What are you talking about?

I'm perfectly fine.

That felt like a whole bunch of nothing, neither did it get interesting enough for me to continue watching the next episode, I can't gauge expectations on this show at all.

That never, ever works for the really good shows. I don't think I've persuaded anyone to watch Fantastic Children but they all lined up to watch Mardock Scramble.

But you got everybody to watch Mardock Scramble.

Except for me, still on my backlog.

Fantastic Children was like a plate of vegetables with no meat on it. It was that boring.

This episode wasn't half bad. The presence of a storyboarder and an episodic director with a little bit of experience helped greatly, even if the beginning of the episode was weighed down by some seriously lengthy exposition about quantum physics, some of which they had already explained before (using the same imagery!)

Still, this time around they executed on the core idea of the show (which is actually a good idea) in a way that wasn't terrible and clunky. There was quite a bit more characters talking about important matters and less psychotic laughing.

Of particular note is one sequence in the middle with an extremely noticeable animation shift. Suddenly everything became cartoony, exaggerated and fluid complete with actual background animation. It looked great, but it kind of came out of nowhere and the rest of the episode looked so stiff in comparison.

Still think you should love your tag until you're done with CCS

Theres more to cute than ccs.
Although it is pretty much cuteness defined so you have a point.
But it is 70 episodes. Takes me a looooong time to get through.
I dont really watch a series just to watch it.
However i definitely like ccs and always have so i will keep watching it for a while.
But definitely not just for the sake of a tag.

Maybe if you didn't pick a boring show with horrible character designs people would actually watch it.

I mean it only took me like a year and a half to get people to watch Utena and Angel's Egg*.
I'll admit, I'm guilty about not really caring about character designs that much. While they're certainly a bit bland I can't say that I'd consider them horrible:

Perhaps if they looked like this I'd find them disgusting:

Natsume S4 - 02

Natsume really needs to learn the kamehameha wave or to pick up a stick to knock the crap out of the youkai like his grandma did.

Good episode.

But it is horrible. And bland. Horizon also has horrible designs, but at least it isn't bland.

Really? so good character design is drawing the same egg faced character multiple times but with different wigs on.

3 of these have same template but with different hair, that's not even including the class mates who look all the same.

I read the manga of another, it's try so hard to be mysterious but it all it manages to do is have terrible pacing.

I would say Horizon is horrible and bland, but looking at SmugDouche and GiantTits at least makes me laugh. I can't really say the same for Fantastic Children.
See? Not bland after all. I never had a problem to know who's who or what's what in Horizon. That's something. Also, characters like Kimi work the way they do (and they do) because the design is as it is.

so i'm curious... what do some of you guys here consider (legitimate) examples of good anime character design?

i hope i didn't just open a can of worms.

It sounds like it's already been opened, what with people backing up Horizon's character designs.
