Wii U Spotted At CES

Anyway resistive + stylus > capacitive (in any capacity) in terms of accuracy. I can't believe people are still arguing against this

Because it's something that you can't really prove. The fact that people argue this should show that it's up to the users preference. For instance, most of the time it's easier for me to use my finger on my iphone than my DS with the stylus.

Yeah, did something change with the 3DS touchscreen, because it works really well with your finger (not nails), maybe it also depends on the game.

Comparatively, the 3DS touchscreen works a lot better with fingers than my DS Lite and Dsi's touchscreen. I'd put on par with the Phat.

If swiping and tapping are hard to do I'd say that's more a problem with your touch screen than resistive touch screens in general...

Well then yea, I guess my fingers must be broken or swipe-challenged because swiping has never been a breeze with any of my DSes.

I was thinking more of a 3DS type of [retractable] stylus that goes inside the uPad.

I think the whole point is quickly reaching the screen with your fingers from the buttons/thumbstick position, the UI on the Zelda demo, seems clearly designed with fingers in mind.

But I might be wrong, did they showed any stylus?

It's a bit hard to do though, and more often than not I just end up using my finger nail to do it.

I've never had to use my nail on my 3DS screen.

Compared to my DS lite screen I'd think so.

I'm pretty sure it's not about aesthetics, but the service life of the sticks. They really don't want to put people in the position of having to buy a replacement pad controller halfway through the generation.

Yeah I thought of that too. Slide Pads/Circle Pads might last longer than analog sticks.

Do you really think Nintendo would go with slide pads if they didn't think they were a better fit than traditional sticks?
If you're right, and the slide pads do "suck compared to sticks" then I'm sure that'll be recognized and they'll be replaced/fixed before release.

I'll hold off on passing judgement on a controller designed by Nintendo, at least until I use it myself. They've done it before, believe it or not - and they do it well.

Don't even need to look any further. Look at the 3DS. They do suck.

No it was only our imagination. The screen should be big enough to not require a stylus.

The tablet has gyro right? It would be cool if you could bring the controller to your face and see a first-person view from a visor in Metroid. Ideas like that.

I don't know, I'm just excited about this new controller, I'm glad Nintendo still tries (gimmick or not) new things, its the only home console I'm even contemplating on buying come next gen, things gotten too boring for me tbh, maybe I'm getting old.

Sometimes using the menus on the 3DS screen is a chore compared to any IOS device or Android phone, damn near anything with a capacitive screen is much easier to use.

I think the 3DS' slide pad is better than the analog stick(s) on the N64, Gamecube, Nunchuk, or Classic Controller because it's smooth and doesn't have that semi-8-way nonsense.

Check the shots of the controller on previous pages - the slide pad looks completely different the the 3DS slide pad (more substantial, ridge around the edge). If you're talking actual mechanics (the "springy" feeling) well, that's just like, your opinion man.

What were the general impressions on the slide pads at e3? I wasn't following it at the time.

Have you played the pokemon games on DS? You swipe to scroll through the pokedex's. I've never seen anyone complain about this working reliably...

I hate typing on my phone. Typing with a stylus >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> typing with my thumbs on a screen.

Gamecube + RE4= thumbstick aiming godness.

3DS + RE:Mercs = "I thought I was decent at least in this game, why can't I aim?"

Except they're not. A resting thumb on a curved surface like a handle is different from one resting on a flat surface like a tablet.

DISCLAIMER: I like sliders. The feel of the resistance just sits well with me for whatever reason.

But your thumb is resting on top of either a slider or a stick? How does anything else change? I just don't see how it changes ergonomics one bit.

It's the concept that matters. One involves leaning your thumb without bending, one involves pushing and pulling with the thumb, it requires more tension and dexterity.

Then why do my iPhone and iPod always miss button presses? Almost to the point of not being accurate enough for games. I never had the same issue with a Palm Pilot.

I have and I used my fingernail. Or the dpad. Or occasionally the stylus.

No need to analyze me about this. I just feel that swiping isn't a good alternative with the touchscreen; it doesn't work for me.

8-way detents and an approximate operational lifetime of way too fucking short.

It's lifespan definitely was way too short, but the 8-way thing was a good thing. Worst part of the Dual Shock sticks is that it's a perfect circle, where walking in a perfect straight line is near impossible.

True, I have no idea why Nintendo had that 8 way thingy in their controllers, but it didn't really bother me all too much though. But I must say that the 3DS slide pad works really well, imo it's feel is similar to a stick. When i'm using it, I totally forget i'm using a slider. Unlike the PSP's, it's really comfortable. And I have zero problems with the aiming in RE:M. YMMV.

I'm still not sure if that's better or worse than the godawful square-shaped design.

They really should make the controller more stylish but I wouldn't hold my breath with how the 3DS ended up compared to fan mockups...

Something like this would work great for Wii U too, like, the bottom part here but with the same inputs of the current one included...

Ugh, I feel exactly the opposite. In 3D games, I generally don't think in 8 cardinal directions, and get really annoyed when the stick feels funny when I try to point it in exactly the direction I want. If you're going to do any sort of direction snapping, put it on the software end like in Super Mario 3D Land.

wait, is the screen on the tablet monochrome?

No.
