Wii U Spotted At CES

I don't understand why people rally for outdated touch screen tech and are convinced it's the best solution.
360's d-pad is newer than the SNES's that means it is better!

Using my DS (and later 3DS which admittedly was much better than the DS) since launch and using various smart phones (and more recently the iPad) over the years. Prefer the capacitive responsiveness by far.
Guess you never played your DS outside during winter with gloves on. Resistive = gloves stay on whereas capacitive = gloves come off, I get a cold, I die and never get to play the next Mario game.

Not sure if serious.

eww, nubs. Can't believe I missed this when it was revealed. Whats the reasoning behind that? Its not a portable console that goes with you in your bag, so no need to be slimline - why not have a decent analog stick? Nintendo does decent analog sticks so I'd like them on this please.

You don't know if these aren't decent, yet. I wouldn't be against throwing some GC sticks on there, but these may be just fine.

resistive Vs capacitive I don't really mind, but I do like the feel of capacitive, and if you imagine yourself holding that controller, capacitive with fingers would be much simpler to use than trying to hold a stylus in your teeth. If nintendo are expecting us to use our fingers, then it should be capacitive

Agreed. I've never had a good experience with resistive using fingers alone.

is the screen single touch or multitouch? Even just supporting two fingers would be enough, but single touch would be a backward step IMO.

Glossy D-pad and buttons on that controller. Why do they keep going backwards? We had matte finish buttons and rear cover on the DSi, matte finish D-pad on the Wiimote. Then they bring out the 3DS with shiny buttons, now the Wii U has shiny D-pad!

How does this matter? Finger slippage? I've never had a problem with that at all, anybody else?

As said, we don't know if they suck yet.
But it was likely a design decision. Based on where the sticks are positioned, if they jutted out too much from the pad, it may require some folks to awkwardly arch their hands while holding the pad.
When in doubt, design decisions are usually for comfort.

Can't believe the amount of stupidity in this thread about the controller!

It's a damned controller for a video game, not designed to be taken out of the house. It has buttons and a screen and is very comfortable to hold (state those who have actually you know . . . used it)

it's not an iPad, it's not any other kind of tablet and resembles nothing of a god damned fisher price toy. It's for controlling video games, not for looking all hipster in starbucks.

Sheesh.

I think the controller design is one of necessity. It needs to be durable and shock resistant, which means a thick, plastic case. It's got to be able to survive multiple drops onto hardwood floors from 3+ feet in the air. It's got to resist spills. Etc, etc, etc.

I like the tiny little base unit but the controller looks like Leapster attempted to make a tablet. Need to see on in the flesh, really.

Well, hopefully Sony or/and Microsoft can make a tablet controller look abit better when they inevitably steal the idea.

Paranoid nonsense.

lol

I would Reggie to come and read some GAF.
I blame him for making Nintendo a fridge company. So much gloss Nintendo, why?
I hope the guys who said they could use the WiiUmote as a tablet replacement have seen those pics, its gloriously fucked up and I won't punish my Comixology account with that.

I pray for a substantial redesign, and would have gladly had a bigger console to get bigger specs. WiiU looks like a sandwich.
But for reasons unknown to me, I'm somewhat interestd in a 3DS redesign along WiU design, rounder and tight.

So, if I recall GAF history, people bashing on the Wii U's controller means it will be successful, right?

I just watched the LG and Samsung press conferences... the consumer electronics brands seem to be getting shit done. That screen on the Wii U controller is just pathetic compared to what we have on tablets and smartphones.

Hi sir/madam, how are you today? That's nice, I was just calling to inform you that: the WiiU controller will NOT COST $699+ LIKE TODAY'S SMART PHONES.

Thank you for your time.

My first thoughts. Looks like Fischer Price "Baby's First Tablet". That isn't to say that the WiiU won't be a fantastic console, but the design would embarrass my iPad-using 2 y/o niece.
Until she played Mario then it would be "Screw this Angry Birds trash"

But both options are very accurate, even if a resistive pad is slightly more accurate I just don't see any situations where it would be relevant for what the Wii U pad is doing.
I get you never played Kirby's Canvas Curse, Trauma Center, Ouendan/EBA at decent difficulty, the DS Zeldas, or even used SwapNote? Good luck with sausage fingers with any of them.

FWIW my previous phone was a high-end (at the time) HTC phone with Windows and a resistive touch screen. Today I have a high-end Android phone and while it feels nicer to use it's a lot less accurate. It's especially noticeable when browsing, and when you want to click one link that's surrounded by other links you pretty much have to zoom in to like 300% or take your chances. With my previous phone I could do that shit at 25% zoom. You just have much more accuracy with the tip of a stylus.

Exactly. Give me additional experiences like that over pinch zooming or a bit f multitouch cut the rope any day!

And also, won't Tekken Wii U allow accurate drawing of genatalia on your opponents? Can't do that with your fingers.

What happened to the good old days when baby's received teddy bears and love?

Guess my MacBook is "Baby's First Laptop" because it has rounded corners and white plastic. That's right Sir Jonathan, I'm calling you out! You invented the baby look!

I am sure 85% of everybody saying how ugly it is, etc will buy the shit out of one and around 2017 or 2018 everyone will say that the original Wii was a jewel that had an incredible library.

Happens every gen.

Ouendan WiiU? oh...MS moneybagged the devs.
Did LIPS kill them?
