Wii U Spotted At CES

Coming into this thread, I knew GAF would somehow find a way to get to 500 posts without actually discussing anything. You all did not disappoint.

Very true...

Well I must say the concept of using tablet controller is an interesting move by Nintendo. Think about it guys, beside many possibilities for gaming, if multiple controllers are supported then it could be cheapest/effective solution for anyone to use gaming/non-gaming apps at home eg. reading books, surfing Internet and multimedia content. Moreover tablet/ph type of gaming can also be introduce such as angry bird. I think there are many interesting use cases. Yes it is not multi-touch but it will b lower price. Nintendo always comes out to surprise the industry... lets see how it goes!!

I wish I had a Fisher-Price toy that could play Zelda.

Brightness is gonna be fine, but it's probably using a tn display to keep the costs down, so the viewing angles aren't gonna be great.

Nintendo isn't that cheap. It won't be a top of the line model but it will be an IPS panel at the very least. I guarantee it.

Viewing angles should match the DSiXL and 3DS (parallax barrier off). Remember, Nintendo has this sort of experience in mind, which would require good viewing angles to pull off correctly.

Luigiv, I love you but I think you give Nintendo too much credit.

So I guess anything with a screen = iPad competitor? WTF

Honestly this is GAF bro. Stop being so defensive of any criticism. For all you know it's industry boards such as these that help companies like Nintendo realize what their consumers want. I mean why settle for a shitty console? Yes, we're probably all gonna buy one, but why is it so bad to voice what we DON'T like about it? I think it's a good thing. Someone post the ps3 batarang controller, it's been confirmed that public outcry helped them scratch the idea.

I'm waiting for this conversation to slowly degrade to the point that people will be accusing Nintendo of cheaping out on the controller screen by replacing it with a chalkboard.

Chalk fits nicely where the stylus would go.

GAF isn't even a blip on Nintendo's radar...
Also, there's nothing wrong with the Wii U from the pictures in this topic and Nintendo should not try to compete with Apple in any way.

I don't understand why people rally for outdated touch screen tech and are convinced it's the best solution.
Might as well take it to its logical conclusion and replace the screen with replaceable pieces of paper with Nintendo providing multiple stencils for each game.

Or this.

Yeah...
Totally comparable...

Both the 3DS and DSi have IPS panels. I don't see how it's too much credit. Nintendo may be cheap but they're not that cheap. Nitendo Spends the money where it counts and cuts costs where they can get away with it. Resolution they can get away with, viewing angle they can not.

Nor should GAF be more than a blip on anyone's radar. It's just one, tiny group of a largely specific type gamers.

What benefits does a multi-touch screen have for a video-game controller with standard buttons that you're going to be holding in two hands most of the time have?

Except those are completely different situations. The boomerang looked terribly uncomfortable whereas we have numerous impressions that said this is comfortable to use...at most we'll see design changes in the casing but the functionality isn't going to change. They're not going to drop the screen or anything they've shown already.

Why do phone manufacturers not make resistive phones any more when they had a full keyboard + more worth of keys to use?

I think it is safe to assume that Nintendo, MS, and Sony have staff monitoring NeoGAF. We know more than a few development houses monitor and sometimes directly interact on the boards here.

Congratulations on avoiding the question. No, really.

As for phones, there is some benefit:

It allows the phones to remain moderately small but have a large screen - which is great if you're positioning your phone as a pocket multi-media device for watching movies, playing games, using apps, etc (without resorting to a clam-shell design). The keys can be larger on the screen to than, for example, a blackberry. Typing on a full keyboard is much easier than on a number pad.

Also, Apple doesn't like buttons.

Phones are also small enough and non-intensive enough that they can be held in one hand making the 'pinch' gesture easily enough, as opposed to a controller with buttons on it you're theoretically using to control games.

Now, care to share what you think would be the benefits of changing the screen-type?

Yes, some developers and even publishers have people here.
But if you think that influences overall decisions, then you're quite crazy. (I point you to Too Human and the Dyack debacle)
GAF is an overwhelming minority.

A capacitive screen is much more responsive. You lightly touch it with a finger, and it reacts. Not so with a resistive screen. You need a lot more pressure, preferably with a stylus - which is what Nintendo is using. A capacitive screen would allow much more convenient switching between using the buttons and interacting with the screen.

I could really not care less what the case of the system looks like. As long as it's not entirely atrocious like the N64 it's all good.

The ScreenPadPro is supposedly really comfortable to actually hold, so I'm not that concerned about it.

As for the screen type... I can see both sides. The benefits of a capacitive screen, but by the same turn, I prefer using a stylus for a lot of touch screen interactions rather than having my fingers physically in the way of trying to play a game.

My DS phat and 3DS (before it was stolen) screens felt like cheap pieces of plastic compared to <insert any phone here>'s glass capacitive screen. Nothing controversial about that opinion. It's just about wanting a better experience which from my personal experience a stylus based screen doesn't provide.

Intelligence and calmness, not sure I can handle it.

I find that the 3DS touch screen is decent enough at registering my fingers without applying excess pressure. If the U's screen is a similar type, I don't forsee it being too much of a problem. Also, and I could be wrong, don't capacitive screens have issues registering certain skin types (such as aged skin)? That might be a problem if Nintendo is aiming to get grandma and grandpa interested in another machine.

I feel that if the difference between a plastic and glass based screen is going to alter your experience that much, you've got some priority issues. When you talk about experience what are you referring too, exactly? Is it simply the feeling under your fingers? Your perception of the product, or how other people perceive it? Does it effect game-play or use in any significant way for you?
