Given that the thread for 'The Artist' is pretty much dead, I thought I'd post my impressions here for anyone interested:

Just got back.

Wow. This movie is amazing. It hits all of the notes it wants to perfectly, and there's just so much subtext in every frame without being obnoxious. It's self-aware but only so much so that it works.

I really need to see this again. Going in, I didn't at all think I would be as emotionally engaged to it the way I was.

How the hell was this not nominated for Best Motion Picture in the Golden Globes? How the hell did Ides of fucking March make its way there?

It's such a good film and if it's still on in theaters nearby, I urge you to go watch it. Have you ever seen an old film and kind of sat bewildered at the timeless charm, yet you're a bit doubtful of yourself, you wonder whether you would find that as charming were you to see it in a new film today? This movie has that timeless charm.

Oh boy someone on icm made a list with 962 noir(ish) films:
http://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/962+noir+films+from+they+shoot+pictures+dont+theyquestion+including+tspdts+250+quintessential+noir+films/burneyfan/

I've only seen like 150 of them. More stuff to watch for the years to come.

that's a silly list because it should be a subset of the other lists. like films with noir elements for example shouldn't have a list at all. and i bet people would like a modern/neonoir list on its own.

big reason i don't like the new ICM. though here i go checking 900 movies.

The Ipcress File

Watched this based on Swoon' recommendation.

Great, great movie. What great charisma every character possesses. Pure class and acting caliber throughout. Michael Caine is incredibly dashing in this film. You instantly fall in love with him.

Highly recommended.

Hang in there, Snowman. We'll save you a seat when you are ready.

Oh, don't worry about me. It's very sad, but he's been pretty sick (kidney and liver failure) for about a month or so and so have somewhat been expecting this. Sad, but having the chance to come to terms with it over time and give him a real goodbye makes it a lot easier to cope with.

Edit: And no matter how sad you are over a loss, the mere pleasure of having known them incalculably outweighs that feeling.

Snowy, of course you realize that I will now forever pin your not loving Tintin down to the fact that you were sitting throughout a film that yelled 'Snowy!' in conjunction with showing a dog getting into whacky hijinks throughout its run time.

Blade Runner----One of the top 10 greatest films ever made. The final cut is simply amazing on blu ray. It was like watching it for the first time.

The best ambiance in a movie ever created. One of the best scores ever to grace film. One of the best directed, shot, and edited films in cinematic history.

Guys if we were all going to die tomorrow, and we could only choose 10 films to bury in our capsule to pass on to future visitors, this has to be one of them.

Yea, I.... watched half and stopped. I don't get it?

Try it again. It isn't a movie for everyone (though i'd also be inclined to say its a movie that gets better every time you watch it... so maybe it is for everyone in that regard?) but you do owe it to youself to finish it. The last 30 min or so of the movie are amazing.

Indeed. Blade Runner gets better for me every time. The atmosphere/ambience is still unmatched for me. I would die to live in that world. So mysterious. Gloomy and dream-like.

Well, fuck. That was awesome. One of the best docs I've seen all year and I don't think there has been any kind of buzz around it.

Melancholia - Well that was interesting. Not the best thing I've seen, but I was still really into it. Visually the movie had some stunning moments, wow. And I was kinda disappointed by Kirsten Dunst's performance, it was good, but after the praise I've seen, I thought it would be extra good. Pretty light for a von Trier, hopefully he'll be back on track with his porn film :lol - 7.5/10

Zodiac - Really intriguing movie! I was glued to my screen the whole time, didn't felt like it was 2h40 min. The ending was really not satisfying though :lol and it gives the viewer almost the same feeling the three main characters had at the end of their investigations, just so frustrating, but you got to move on. Direction was also really impeccable, I don't know why, but it looks like it would have been a fucking pain shooting that movie. Great stuff, probably my second favourite Fincher. - 8/10

I just watched The Andromeda Strain from 1971 on TCM. It was hilariously bad but also fun. I think 1970s future technology is my favorite. All the doors slide to the side but everything runs on punchcards. Also they have exactly the right equipment for the precise far fetched scenario that has just occurred. Like a little window in the cleanroom that dispenses baby bottles.

i liked ANOTHER WORLD but felt it could have ended more strongly. some of the imagery is shockingly beautiful, the cosmic juxtaposed with the real human drama on display. incredibly strong first writing effort by the star of the film, brit marling.

I hated that film. I also dislike it when writers pen something and they magically get cast into a major part. I sort of doubt that she had herself in mind when she wrote that part and even if she did it strikes me as petty.

Sorry Snowman. Losing dogs is tough. My family had a golden retriever that was just 9 months older than me and we were inseparable. Died when I was 12 and I'm pretty sure it's the first time I was actually sad.

Hm, I think it's time to ride out today's wave of introversion by watching Rushmore for the first time

Can't see the image

Sorry to hear that Snowman. Condolences.

Seen American Psycho and Bereavement, and very briefly: the first one almost killed me with laughter, nice.
The second one was a rather generic horror flick, but with an interesting base idea and some interesting tits.
Also tbh, the first one kinda obscured the second one, since i saw them back to back.

Talking to me Des? I've had it in my amazon wishlist for a while (someone posted a trailer in here, iirc) but it comes out on BD March 19, apparently. :\

So I watched Jackass 2.5 and 3 for the first time tonight. I enjoyed them both (though it seemed like they were having much more genuine fun in 3... possibly because they were all sober) but something about the credits really ruined it for me.

"American Humane monitored some of the animal action
No animals were harmed in those scenes"

So wait, does that mean animals were harmed in other scenes? has there been any articles about this? I'm hoping that it just means no animals were harmed but with wording like that I can't help but think the worst.

edit: going by the American Humane site, it just seems like they couldn't make it to set on certain days but have no reason to think anything bad happened. Shame they couldn't pause filming until they could be there.

Yea, I.... watched half and stopped. I don't get it?

It's a more of a mood movie than anything. It's also a pretty unforgiving sci-fi movie. It took me a few tries to really get into it, but once I got the blu-ray and sat through it I found everything in it amazing. Especially considering it's 30 years old.

The cityscapes, the soundtrack, the minimalist script, the strong performances (Hauer and Young are fantastic). It's definitely my favourite Ridley Scott movie, and one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

Don't think a movie has ever looked better than Blade Runner (maybe Alien). Will probably remain that way as well.

Finally watched Sucker Punch over the weekend on the Movie Network, and thought it was awesome....can't find the original post about it here since search is still down but man, that 4th Dance,on the futuristic train heading into the city and the battles with the robots was incredible, the Blu-ray must be cheap by now so I'll buy it now and rewatch at some point.

i'm putting it on my list of things to watch. what did you think of senna? i still haven't seen it.

Loved it. Didn't know anything about the guy going into the film, so I don't know how much that helped or hurt the movie, but as it is Senna is one of my favorites of last year (and probably my favorite doc of the year, just ahead of TT3D).

Btw, if anyone's interested in reading about TT3D: Closer to the Edge, I wrote something about it on my site a little while back.

I understand the love for Blade Runner as an audiovisual work, but it's so narratively unsatisfying that to call it an all-time great science fiction movie seems absurd to me.

I like you Snowman, but the only thing 'absurd' here is that statement. The look of that film had such a huge fucking impact on every other science fiction film to come. It is a master-piece, plain and simple. Also, even though your need for a 'satisfying narrative' in that genre seems ... narrow minded, I wouldn't say there isn't anything there in terms of interesting characters and motivations.

Watched Best of the Best and Gymkata last night.

Oh man, Best of the Best is Citizen Kane compared to Gymkata.

Sucker Punch was very, very bad

Historical import and artistic quality are not synonymous. 2001, for example, is a much more influential sci-fi movie that ALSO has an almost incalculably deeper, more satisfying narrative within it, so I don't think that the opinion is "narrow-minded." It's an audiovisual masterpiece, as I freely admitted (well, really more just visual, since I think the soundtrack is fairly overrated as well, but I grant that that may be a bias of mine), but I need more than that for me to call a movie great. It's one of the most infamous examples of something that received a mixed critical reaction upon release but has been qualitatively re-assessed upward, yet it's an instance where the initial critical shrug of the shoulders was alot closer to reality.

Anyway, I watched "Shadows and Fog" this morning, and it was EXACTLY what I needed: hysterical, light, charming, yet with just enough meat that one does not walk away unsatisfied. In that sense, I'd say that this movie is what people said Midnight in Paris would be.
