Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

Everytime I see the WiiU controller I think it will cramp your hands/wrists after a while. You have to hold your hands pretty far apart, isn't that an ergonomic nightmare?

No--putting the hands as close together as typical dual analog controllers do is a utilitarian compromise, not an ergonomic feature. Check your posture when you hold one, it tends to make me tuck in my elbows and bend my wrists ever so slightly more than is comfortable.

Try this exercise:

Put a DVD case in your hands sideways.

Now imagine that it had curves to accommodate your fingers' natural arch into a position for holding a controller.

Tell me if you still think you'll feel cramped beyond what a normal controller would.

Glad to hear Reggie outright say there will be news before E3. Hope you're not lying, Fils-Aime...

Why even bother asking when you think all impressions of the thing are invalidated simply because they're reports from the media?

The media's soul purpose is to trick us. Don't you know anything? Clearly they're all lying because it doesn't mesh with TAJ's opinion, having never held one.

that car video looks like that VHS cassette Knight Rider game.
anyway...impressive

and the wiiU controller screen is even more impressive.
but won't stop bitching about it being poor quality and no pinch-to-zoom etc though :/

If I had to guess, I'd assume the demo uses a sequence of spherical images with an overall resolution far beyond 1080p (tiled). Some of those tiles are used to display the main video on the TV screen, and the system uses gyro data to select, load and display tiles showing a part at a certain angle on the pad. So I believe the demo is meant to demonstrate the systems ability to work with huge amounts of data.

If that is true then the speed in which the positional data and the corresponding video feed is sent to the controller is amazing.

Iwata has a history of announcing online stuff at GDC, for example the Virtual Console service in 2005.
It would make some sense to announce the new branding at GDC (if it will indeed be rebranded).

Online could also be talked about, whereas E3 will be solely about the games.

That was GDC 2006, and it was the partners for VC, not the VC itself (that was E3 2005.)

I do hope they announce a transfer program for Wii->Wii U.

Origins would be great. Not as good as Steam, but it would make the service in between PSN and XBL IMO.

GDC is the Game Developers Conference, so anything we get from it is likely to be targeted towards developers as much as anyone else. Perhaps confirming that the console will support two controllers, or providing details of the online functionality. Actual games are very unlikely to be shown until E3, though.

GDC will have reps from Blizzard and Nintendo demonstrating how Diablo 3 utilizes the WiiU controller for inventory management and other HUD info leaving the game screen HUD free.

I think speaking more about their downloadable/digital scene would be a nice morsel for GDC especially if want to get smaller developers aboard it early.

While I'm all for minimalist huds, some things really should stay on the main screen (like the health and energy/spell resource globes).

I have always agreed with this in the past, but Nintendo has used it in recent years with the full knowledge that the world outside is watching. There's no doubt they view it as an appropriate venue for certain kinds of announcements prior to E3.

Don't feed me false hope with visions of such a wonderful future. There are few games that justify an entire console purchase on their own. Diablo III playable on a Upad would be one of them for me.

Nintendo has made it clear they do not care about support for two controllers, and were only looking into if it were possible on the chance that some third party developer decided they didn't mind forcing one Wii-U owner to take his controller to a friend's house. There's no way Nintendo will make any sort of public announcement about two-controller support unless they change this stance, otherwise it will confuse consumers. It's just like the 3DS second analogue stick - that was planned long before the 3DS was released, but Nintendo didn't even mention its possibility to the public until they had a couple developers who really wanted to use it in their games.

Having said that, Nintendo did reveal the Wii controllers for the very first time at GDC, so they have no problems making major announcements there.

The 3DS and Wii U situations aren't comparable at all...the 3DS was never touted to have 2 sticks but with the Wii U it was always a possibility that wasn't made clear. Nintendo has never said they don't care about supporting 2, just that 1 was their main focus for various reasons but if enough developers ask about it (like with the circle pad for the 3DS) I'm sure they'll figure something out

Anyway, what I'm looking for is some clarification on online stuff. I know games probably won't be revealed until E3

I was actually considering this myself recently. Seems like a perfect project for Monster Games (who already expanded on the flight aspect of Wii Sports Resort for Pilotwings) and a great time for Nintendo to upgrade their aging but still impressive water algorithms (which I think have been in use since the original Wave Race, but certainly since Mario Sunshine).

It would be a much better launch title than F Zero. As in, it would sell to more than just geeks and otaku. F Zero GX is one of my favorite racers of all time, but it's pretty niche.

Big Blue as a hidden course in Wave Race U!

And yes, Wave Race should be launch title, water/water physics are great to show the power of the console.

F-Zero UX needs to come later though.

So who actually thinks they'll change the name? Because I don't. It's already been marketed and announced as Wii U, and isn't likely to change due to the concept of the system.

The Revolution, however, did change to Wii...

If Nintendo could secure this for Wii U, as a timed exclusive (ain't gonna happen) that would be a system seller. I guess the best we could hope for some exclusive content but even then I imagine Blizzard ain't into that shit.

Either way it will come to Wii U I'm sure.

Even though would like a name change, just for personal reasons, I doubt it would happen now. Revolution was a hardcore gamer name and didn't fit with their new strategy. This time however they are still focused on the expanded audience with core gamers coming second (albeit closer to first than this gen)

yep

I think they're going to push Diablo 3 for Wii U at either GDC or E3. Probably E3. It'll be their big launch game.

Revolution was always just a codename.

I remember being told at one point that it was under consideration for the actual name, but that outside counsel they hired to see if it would be okay said that they would run in to legal troubles in America with a comparatively named product that I can't recall.

I think the WiiU name has been stuck in our minds enough its nearly impossible to see a change its not a codename they came out and called it Wii U

whatever happened to that Wii U news from the blogger who posted here?

He's still in the process of making sure he wont get anyone into trouble by releasing it

The thing that bothers me about the controller is how it looks so empty. It's like everything is running away from the screen, so I had to shop it:

I think the smaller sides would make it easier to get your thumb over to the screen if you need to. Unless the internals take up that much room, there really isn't any reason for it to be so large anyway.

Just food for thought, I suppose.

Man, I hope the B button is easy to reach. The only real complaint I have with the controller is the placement of the right slide pad. It just seems like it'd make more sense to have it bellow the buttons. If there's a major controller change come E3, I think that'll be it.

But who knows, maybe all the buttons are reachable as is.

He said that Retro is working on a WiiU title but did not reveal/know what it was - if you're talking about that blogger...

How big are the buttons? If the UPad is Nintendo's answer to those who want traditional controls, I hope the buttons and dpad are of proper size (like on the CC, not the WiiMote). Going w/ slide pads over analog sticks is alarming. Do they think casuals will be less scared of buttons if they make them itty bitty?

I think the slide pads are being used because it's easier to reach over with your thumb and use the touch screen than if you were using analog sticks.

That's just my assumption though.
