Apple iPad 2 |OT|

I would love to be wrong but I can't really see them putting LTE in an iPad before the iPhone. Although if they are going the route of releasing an iPad early in a year and then shrink its internals and put it into an iPhone I guess it makes sense.

Cheers, I just read about it. I'm surprised the 4S doesn't work on 4G already, could have sworn I saw that as an advertised feature somewhere - I've even been checking mine around the city waiting to see it say 4G on the status bar. Doh.

The 4S works at 14.4 mbps down. that speed gets advertised as "4G” frequently by the phone companies for other phones but it’s not nearly as fast as actual LTE.

Can't decide between selling my iPad 2 to get a 3 when that hits, or waiting out a year and upgrading to the inevitable 4 in 2013.

Will I be able to transfer all my purchased apps across as many machines as I like, or is there a limit? I vaguely recall iTunes on my PC being limited to a certain number of machine licenses, but so long as I have my account on there, I should be able to transfer any app purchases to any ios device, correct?

In this case, the reliability doesn't really matter. Other than LTE, which I'm skeptical about, there is nothing in that rumor remotely surprising.

@Jharp, there's no limit.

Yeah, the LTE functionality is kind of strange, but the other stuff was a given.

And Bloomberg isn't claiming this is a rumor, they're stating that its real information. Bloomberg is a gigantic publication so it's probably the most reliable claim yet.

So here is an interesting situation:

My buddy got an iPad1 for christmas. A 3G model, specifically. It was a used one, his wife's brother bought it for them. Anyway, the thing works great, its basically in perfect condition. But there is something really strange with the 3G. It apparently is still set up to whoever was the original owner's ATT account. The 3G works, but my friend is definitely not paying for it. He has it set to WiFi only for the time being, but here is the issue. He can't cancel the 3G contract. I went over and played around with it, and to cancel the 3G plan it requires the original owner's info. So basically for now, he can't use the 3G. Err, he can, but its really shady and probably illegal or something.

Has anyone encountered this? I told him to just go to the Applestore, which is a pretty obvious answer but if there is some way to cancel the original owner's info/plan himself I'm sure it would be a lot more convenient. When he received the iPad it had been completely wiped and factory reset, which is perhaps the strangest thing.

Here is how the math works:
Buy iPad 1 -$500 -> sell iPad1 +$350 (-$150) -> buy iPad 2 -$500 (-$650) -> sell iPad 2 +$350 (-$300) -> buy iPad 3 -$500 (-$800)

OR

Buy iPad 1 -$500 -> sell iPad1 +$200 (-$300) -> buy iPad 3 -$500 (-$800)

Of course all the figures are estimates (I'm not accounting for tax or buying the iPad during a sale) and who knows what the iPad2/3 resale values will be if Apple changes the retail price but it should be roughly the same amount of money spent whether you skip or you don't skip generations.

Purchases are limited to simultaneous use on 5 PCs or Macs and unlimited iOS devices. You have unlimited transfers between computers as long as you remember to deauthorize the computer after use.

The 3G is connected to the Sim card not the iPad. just take it out and get a free AT&T sim from the Apple store (or buy a sim from AT&T :/)

Anyone use the Skype app?

I find that if I've been chatting for a while on PC, and then sign in on iPad, the app loads in the ENTIRE conversation I had on the PC, line by line, and the longer the conversation was, the slower it goes. I've had to wait several minutes before being able to reach the most recent message.

Is there any way of stopping this from happening?

You can still sell a good condition iPad 2 for $400+ now and that should be the same up until the week the invitations go out. And definitely always try and buy one tax free.

Amazon won't carry it right away. MacMall, J&R, B&H, and other resellers will.

There's no way I could go 3 months without an iPad. I sold two weeks early last year and it was horrible.

The iPad is definitely less compelling if you're already an avid smartphone user.
But webbrowsing on a larger screen is definitely a LOT more engaging than on a tiny one.

I mean, whether you're on a laptop, desktop, smartphone or tablet you're going to be doing the exact same activities. So try not to gauge it's value solely on the things you can't do on the iPhone.. because well, there aren't many things the iPad can do that the iPhone can't.

I didn't see the value in the iPad for a long time. And I'm still not convinced its the right product for me, but I can definitely understand the benefits of having six times the screen real estate.

Just ran into John Gruber at the Seinfeld show in Philly. I shouted "JOHN!" and shook his hand. He clearly thought I knew him somehow.

How lame of me :P

Ha, cool. I started listening to his show a few weeks ago. He's pretty alright. I much prefer siracusas show though. Gruber's blog is a must read though.

Before the iPad, I was using my iPhone for surfing on the couch, and I remember thinking to myself, "if only this screen was bigger, it would be exactly what I want!". Not in an Android phone Frankenscreen way, but in a rip the screen off my Macbook way.

I like having the option of a full screen on my desk or couch, and the small screen in my pocket, both with similar UI's.

I used to read him religiously for years but I can't stand his bias anymore; it's poisoning his commentary :/. And after broadening my blogroll I see his sins of omission more clearly now, for example, he hasnt mentioned Android's new design guide site, has he?

Yeah, I'm starting to think that an iPad + a Gaming PC is the future of my computing setup.. but the idea of abandoning OSX is completely unimaginable to me. I feel like even this years iPad won't really be enough to placate my needs. On the other hand it doesnt really make financial sense to buy an MBA. -its kind of the worst of both worlds, its not quite powerful enough to be your MAIN MAIN rig, but its also not an iPad.

The current MBP line is a joke, which saddens me to no end. The product I'm most anticipating from Apple is a refreshed MBP line that blows me away.

I don't think he's mentioned it yet. and yeah, i definitely see through his schtick. But I kinda view him as just another forum poster. He's not gospel by anymeans, but he does link to some content I wouldn't otherwise see, and at the very least provides logical arguments to back up his preconceived notions.

To be fair, he does work at his own speed. I've seen him mention things four or five days after I first saw it. Maybe he wants to take the time to read it thoroughly?

If you tweet him about it, the odds are good he'll reply. He's replied to me before.

To defend Gruber just a bit...he's one of the few people calling most the of the tech press and analysts on their shit. He really shows how pathetic so many tech "columnists" are. Yes he is biased, but he's biased in a way that doesn't require him to lie or make up crap. He even calls himself on bad predictions.

I wouldn’t say Gruber’s biases are poisoning his commentary. that’s an exaggeration, imo. His writing is still very good and at least he’s honest enough about his priorities that you know the angle he’s coming from when he talks about the industry.

As for that Android design guide site, I don’t even remember seeing it mentioned in the feed for my other, more general tech sites. maybe no one gives a shit till the apps and OS actually start to show evidence of this work (I know Gruber DID mention that Google wants to force vendors to use ICS UI for commonality without major changes on top. naturally, he thought that was a step int he right direction for consumers and developers)

well you've been misinformed. Google doesn't want to force vendors to use ICS UI--Google wants the UI files to be included for use by developers which is a not so subtle and very important difference.

The Android design guide site was announced with a surprise interview with Duarte on The Verge (you know, that tech journalism website Gruber was hyping at launch) and was the lead story on the Verge, Hacker News and most of the websites I follow...

I think Topolsky properly called out one of the poisonous effects of Gruber's recent commentary. Gruber's 'response' was the usual snark.

ah, the horseshit blog entry. yeah, we’re just gonna have to agree to disagree cuz I thought Topulsky’s entry was awfully defensive and he missed the point of what Seigler was saying. So although I like Topulsky in general, I really do think there’s stuff in Android that lacks polish that some people just don’t see since they’re more tech oriented and care else about UI design.

As for the Android thing, I thought it was something older. I saw the announcement of the Duarte “exclusive” but missed the announcement, I guess. wasn't it just yesterday? I thought you were talking about something older and that’s why you were harping on Gruber for not covering it, immediately.

Funny enough, MG Seigler came right out the other day and admitted that he hates Android (with a convoluted and contrived justification for doing so). *shrug* agree to disagree and all that.

you call it convoluted, but I understand his point of view. It has put carriers more into control and that, usually, makes things worse for consumers (at least, in ways that I would care about. you and some others may not).

And I found the android design guideline story on the verge. it wasn’t on the front page anymore. it was a 2 paragraph blurb on the 12th. And while it is a good step in the right direction, I still don’t think it’s a big enough story until we start to see real improvements in apps that people can buy.

Anyone doing the OT for the Apple education event in NYC next week? Speculation is that it may be a textbook industry shakeup. I have no remorse if that industry gets destroyed. Such a horrible industry.

The points he makes give reason to hate Google, not Android.

So would that fix the problem of say hitting your hand on the screen when writing? I would love for them to include something like that with the new ipad. I could imagine it being really awesome with the supposed higher resolution screen.

Apparently there is a third party solution that looks pretty damn slick http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1225098940/ipen-the-first-active-stylus-for-ipad

It would fix the hand impression problem with an active stylus, but it has to be implemented in the software, or better yet, the OS. I don't think it will be added at on OS level soon, but that 3rd party solution seems cool.

Wow this is great! If they can make it work with Sketchbook Pro with pressure sensitivity built into the pen, I'll buy FIFTY of them. Damn sight cheaper than a Cintiq.

Regarding the education event: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2...to-digitally-destroy-textbook-publishing.ars?

Apple is slated to announce the fruits of its labor on improving the use of technology in education at its special media event on Thursday, January 19. While speculation has so far centered on digital textbooks, sources close to the matter have confirmed to Ars that Apple will announce tools to help create interactive e-books—the "GarageBand for e-books," so to speak—and expand its current platform to distribute them to iPhone and iPad users.

Along with the details we were able to gather from our sources, we also spoke to two experts in the field of digital publishing to get a clearer picture of the significance of what Apple is planning to announce.

So far, Apple has largely embraced the ePub 2 standard for its iBooks platform, though it has added a number of HTML5-based extensions to enable the inclusion of video and audio for some limited interaction. The recently-updated ePub 3 standard obviates the need for these proprietary extensions, which in some cases make iBook-formatted e-books incompatible with other e-reader platforms. Apple is expected to announce support for the ePub 3 standard for iBooks going forward.

GarageBand for e-books

At the same time, however, authoring standards-compliant e-books (despite some promises to the contrary) is not as simple as running a Word document of a manuscript through a filter. The current state of software tools continues to frustrate authors and publishers alike, with several authors telling Ars that they wish Apple or some other vendor would make a simple app that makes the process as easy as creating a song in GarageBand.

Our sources say Apple will announce such a tool on Thursday.

And Inkling CEO Matt MacInnis agrees that such a move would be very likely. MacInnis previously worked on education projects at Apple before leaving the company in 2009 to pursue his own ideas about creating interactive digital books. Inkling currently offers a variety of digital textbooks with interactive features, including the ability to share notes with classmates and instructors, via an iPad app.

"When you think about what Apple is doing... they are selling tens of thousands of iPads into K-12 institutions," MacInnis told Ars. "What are they doing with those iPads? They don't really replace textbooks, because there's not very much content on offer," he said.

Don't expect that content to come directly from Apple, however. "Practically speaking, Apple does not want to get into the content publishing business," MacInnis said. Like the music and movie industries, Apple has instead built a distribution platform as well as hardware to consume it—but Apple isn't a record label or production studio.

But what Apple does provide is industry-leading tools for content production, such as Logic or Final Cut Pro, to help create content. The company also produces tools like GarageBand or iMovie that make such production accessible to a much wider audience.

Will Apple launch a sort of GarageBand for e-books? "That's what we believe you're about to see," MacInnis told Ars (and our less sources agree). "Publishing something to ePub is very similar to publishing web content. Remember iWeb? That iWeb code didn't just get flushed down the toilet—I think you'll see some of [that code] repurposed."

More at ars.

On the other hand it doesnt really make financial sense to buy an MBA. -its kind of the worst of both worlds, its not quite powerful enough to be your MAIN MAIN rig, but its also not an iPad.

Wow. I'm of the complete opposite opinion. The 2011 MBA might have been the best purchase of my life, and easily the best computer I've ever owned, all things considered. Insanely light and portable, yet a full fledged computer. At home I dock it to a 25' monitor w/wireless KB+mouse, and I have keep reminding myself I'm not using a desktop. I do everything on it and it's never, ever missed a beat. It seems much faster than my 2010 15' Macbook Pro, which I would primarily credit to the SSD, which makes a massive difference compared to a HDD. Honestly I can't think of any major ways in which it can be improved. Never, ever has it felt slow to me, and I regularly work with large files in the CS suite and have many things open at the same time. I don't even know what I'd want in an updated version, other than the mythical retina display. Build quality is insanely good. It's what made me sell my iPad AND my Macbook Pro. So for me, the very best of both worlds. Ultra-portability and desktop-class performance. But I'm not a gamer, which is possibly what you're referring to with your MAIN MAIN rig, and in that case none of Apple's machines would suit your needs anyway.

That being said, bring on the iPad 3. Doubt I'll be able to resist this one.

Funny enough, MG Seigler came right out the other day and admitted that he hates Android (with a convoluted and contrived justification for doing so). *shrug* agree to disagree and all that.

There's nothing 'convulted or contrived' about what he says, besides the fact that you don't like what he says. They're facts. And I fully agree with him. Which is why I've always thought this meme of iOS being so 'evil' and Android so 'open' and a 'force for good' is such bullshit. Apple HAS tangibly changed the rules of the phone industry, and made things so much better for consumers in many ways. Google has changed very little when it comes to the relationship between carrier/consumer. Google has successfully gotten almost everyone to adopt to adopt their platform, and that's good for them- but for who else? And at what price? I respect Apple for changing the rules of the game, and delivering on an uncompromised vision. Android was indeed a promise that turned out to be disingenuous.

Also, the irony for me is that Apple offers me more 'choice' than Google. Why? Because I don't considered a skinned Android as a choice, infected with custom bullshit from the oems/carriers, and with no guaranteed updates, etc. The way I look at it I have a total of 1 phone choice if I decide to go with Android, and thats the Galaxy Nexus. What if I'm looking for a stock Android device thats smaller than a titanic 4.65'? Woops, out of luck. I see everything else as crippled horseshit, and I can't see how someone who cares about software, technology, quality, and the experience can disagree. Just like I would never touch a hypothetical iPhone skinned and modified by OEMs/carriers with a ten foot pole. Because I wouldn't consider that iOS. Because companies like motorola, samsung, HTC, Sony, etc have no place 'enhancing' software developed by Google.

I just read this infamous MG Siegler Galaxy Nexus review, and yeah, Topolsky seems like a whiny, defensive baby. I was expecting a bashfest, but Siegler's review contained at least the same if not MORE positive statements about the phone than negative. Yeah, the mercedes comment wasn't the greatest, but it reflects badly on Topolsky to pull out that one statement out of context and make such a massive deal about it. I found the rest of the review to be very balanced and honest as a whole, with him giving credit to Google for a whole host of things, and pointed out several areas where he believed ICS/GN to be superior to iOS/iPhone. Having extensively used both phones, I found it very difficult to take issue with anything he said. His conclusion of 'it's the best non-iPhone I've ever used' is one I also agree with. It's the small intangibles (and tangibles) that still have me preferring the iPhone by quite a margin. The review did not deserve the hissy fit that was made over it. If anyone came out of it looking like a fanboy, it's definitely Topolsky (and he's my favorite tech guy, so I don't say that lightly).

I don't see the connection between the title and speculation in the article. Destroy digital publishing with an iBooks creator (Macs only I'm guessing)? Such 'digitally enhanced' content will likely lead to ever more expensive textbooks... Not one of the commentators is interested in a notepad :/

But what Apple does provide is industry-leading tools for content production, such as Logic or Final Cut Pro, to help create content.

Oi Why the video pros are moving away from Apple

Edit: made a thread for the Jan 19 event
