Hey GAF so I'm planning to get an iPad but I'm just worrying about the next refresh. If they announce a new one and the old one gets bumped down in price will I receive the difference? Or should I just wait for the next reiteration?
You'll have to wait. It might not come until this summer though.

So is AVPlayerHD the best app for

1) loading avi or mkv videos onto the iPad 2
2) outputting them to the TV via the HDMI adapter
3) supporting output in 360p 720p or 900p

Has anyone ever tried playing a 720p or above file on the iPad 2 outputting to the TV? Can the iPad 2 or AVPlayerHD handle it? Does this app support widescreen output?

This app is amazing, but I was rather disappointed that this doesnt do AirPlay video to AppleTV, which would complete my iPad.

Although is there any other app that streams videos via AirPlay from the iPad? (other than AirVideo)

You ever use AVPlayerHD to HDMI out to a TV? Does it handle HD videos ok?

I've been using an ipad 2 for the first time whilst housesitting for friends, and i've always thought they were a bit bullshit, but i'm now sold. iPad 3 day one.

Always found it confusing when people say they didn't get the iPad. It's a computer, just with a touch screen. Hell I'd call it the best computer I ever owned. I almost never touch my MacBook Pro anymore. Other than some MS Office usage once in a while the iPad functions as my computer in every other way I need and is 100x more enjoyable to use.

I am positive iOS is going to fully replace OSX one day. The way Tim Cook talks about his belief that the tablet market will take over the home PC market makes me think Apple is working their way towards that goal.

I've the iPad 1 and I can't wait to see what Apple is doing with the iPad 3. I definitely want to upgrade, because in comparison to my 4S, my iPad is as slow as Christina's dripping.

A retina display iPad could totally become my main computing device.

As it stands now the resolution is too low.

if they update the browser to be able to support more tabs, and keep them stored between sessions, then for me it would be a much more usable device to replace a laptop. resolution I don't really care about.

It's always the same story. :lol

I'm the opposite, I want one until I play with it. The OS needs a refresh badly. I think I'll finally crack though if they up the resolution and tweak the design so it's easier to hold. I think the sides are uncomfortable because they are not rounded enough.

I don't expect the OS to be over-hauled. I expect the biggest change for iOS 6 will be a integrated Maps/Navigation. What issues do you find iOS still lacks?

I'm curious to know if those people who consider an iPad to be the best computer they've ever owned have ever also owned a MacBook Air (the 2011 versions in particular)...

My iPad is not better than my 4 year old Laptop at the things I want my four year old Laptop do. That does not stop the iPad been a fantastic piece of tech though. It in no way replaces a computer - something I have used continually for the past 20+ years - and it is sully to think it should. That however does not stop it being useful at it own things - and after two years with one it is starting to fell like a necessity to have around , instead of just a fancy bit of tech.

I'm pretty happy with iOS 4 as it is right now and can't think of (m)any features I want. For me, it's all about the apps.

I really want an IPad 2 now but at this point I think it's kind of silly.
GAF, when do you think the apple iPad 3 will be released and announced?

You didnt upgrade to iOS5? Tabbed browsing feature for safari on iPad with 5 is something I cant live without now for iPad.

I have an OG iPad and the stability (and performance) is already bad enough, I don't need it to get worse. The iCab browser laughs at the Safari improvements.

It's the gestures for me. I hardly ever hit the Home button anymore. In fact, I'm kinda hoping the 3 doesn't have one.

I enabled them in iOS4 with Xcode.

Same. Thought it was pointless until I got one. Now I rarely browse on my phone, and my old G4 is starting to gather dust. Great device.

I've used a Air quite a bit and own my MBP but iPad is the winner for me, and it's clearly the direction Apple is going in for home computing. Mac's for developers, iPad's for everyone else. Tim Cook seems even more insistent on this than even Steve Jobs did in the way he talks about iPad's cannibalizing laptop sales and eventually will dwarf the market in the way iPhone did to the iPod.

The current Macbook Air is the greatest computing device to ever hit the market.
The iPad costs less than 50% of that, which is only fair.

*shrugs*
I have both in my household. Could, but wouldn't wanna live without either.

Apple not including Flash on iPad caused people to complain at first but in the end was a big favor to the industry as a whole, much like when they got rid of the floppy on the iMac.

A static row of icons is bad enough on a phone, but for me it's unacceptable in a tablet. I like what ICS is doing, both in terms of widgets and the multi-tasking control. Too bad there aren't enough tablet apps for me.

I know it's about the apps, but the launcher is a big deal for me. Browsing my email, Facebook, twitter etc. right from the launcher is what I want to be able to do before I commit to a full screen app.

Issue is, that would have to come to iPhone too. Apple likes having the same OS across both iPhone and iPad.

Yeah, I get that, but to be honest, I don't want to see the OS at all and I doubt that will change, even if there were widgets and all that. It's just so bland and boring, I'm glad when apps don't try to mimic the interface.

I just sold both. Going to try living with just the ipad 3, along with my family laptop for more general computing tasks.

I *loved* my macbook air 13". Light, long battery, same res as a 15" MBP. Just gorgeous. But I was barely using 10% of its capabilities, so I realised that money could be used for something else in the home.

What's a good app for streaming music not on your iTunes library to your device?

I love MacBooks too but the way I look at it. What is the vast majority of my computer usage? Browing the internet, checking my social networks (twitter/facebook), watching videos, checking e-mail, and some light document/excel work. It is more enjoyable IMO on a iPad to browse the internet, check social networks, and watch videos thanks to the touch screen. The boost in specs and retina display for iPad 3 will just make that even bigger. And not to mention iPad brings about reading ebooks which is not that feasible on a Macbook. Plus it has all the iOS games (let's be honest the iOS game scene is better than OSX).

Only thing I see superior on a Macbook is content creation, whuch I don't do much of outside of some document work.

Is it true that the iPad 2 has a set number of charges? What is the best way to charge your iPad?

I/we typically let the iPad 2 drain down to 10% or lower, and then charge it fully. Sometimes, not a full charge though

Without USB host and some form of file management, no way... I'm worried Apple will hold on to this for too long since they profit so much from the higher storage models.

If the iPad3 refresh is good enough I'd definitely spring for one, but the lack of storage management is such a problem for me. I've ripped my DVDs and I am not gonna wait until we get terabytes of solid state memory on these devices lol.

I've now had a iphone4s since launch and the talk about ipad2 being too low res (well in comparison to iphone4's ret display) I find to be just silly. It looks fine. I switch between them both all the time as I have both handy and there really isn't like much a difference. Not saying that a ret display ipad3 isn't desirable but its not "too low reso" and reads like uninformed dribble

So because it doesn't bother you that you can count the pixels of your battery status, it's uninformed dribble? Okay.
