Stupid Questions |OT| of questions that don't deserve their own threads

I guess my previous question got overlooked, so I'll simplify. What are the best ways to tell if an intermittent connection problem over DSL is on my end or the provider end? I've already done the typical things that a support tech would tell me like power down my router and DSL modem for a while and then restart them, and to no avail. I thought maybe there was something I could do in the command prompt with ping or tracert to see if I could access at least Verizon.net or something. When I open the network and sharing center in Win7, it shows a disconnect between the network and Internet. I really don't want to have to deal with the outsourced techs.

ping www.google.com
If address can be resolved: DNS works for provider and router
If route can be found: Everything works on provider's end
If route alternates between being found and not being found: Router probably shitty or cable fucked
tracert www.google.com
Look where it fails to connect, the thing at that address has got an issue

Address can't be resolved:
tracert 8.8.4.4
Ends up at Google's end (takes some time): Internet isn't broken
Otherwise: Look where it fails to connect, the thing at that address has got an issue

If you're looking for a reliable DNS, put 8.8.4.4 into the relevant text boxes on your router configuration webpage thing. Also, make sure your computers use the router's DNS (i.e. enter the router's address as DNS).
Some routers need a checkbox checked that's called "DNS forwarding enabled" or similar.

If you're not getting anywhere with the stuff above, please specify what's actually not working.

Also, DSL can fail under high pressure for purely physical reasons (that's related to error correction algorithms and the amount of resulting virtual parallel connections a copper cable can actually handle). So if your internet connection is reliably dying at 8pm, that's probably because your whole block is simultaneously torrenting or something.

I noticed on my Macbook you can change the wallpaper cycle to every 5 seconds. Does anyone seriously do that? lol I can't believe that's an option.

I still haven't found any, so I'm gonna ask here.

Do you guys know where I can find like a wall mount for Blu-ray movies? A single one for each movie, with the front cover looking out into the room.

Have been looking for a year now. :(

A/V question: Have a USB drive hooked into an LCD monitor, running a repeating slideshow. For some reason, the images are not loading completely during the slideshow, and instead an image will load piecemeal, i.e. the upper third loads first, then the middle third and then the bottom, within the space of about a second. Any ideas what may be the issue? I think it may be a resolution thing but I'm not entirely sure, and I can't play around with it at the moment.

USB throughput vs resolution or the drive's slow or the display software is weird or extreme data fragmentation. What filesystem does the USB drive have? Does the TV do the picture display part? Which USB standard is it? Is the drive also slow when you use it in the same manner on a computer? Does the TV behave similarly with a different drive?

So I need to mail something to Vienna, Austria. Now Vienna (or Wien) is a city...but also one of the nine states. So do I just put Wien for both?

Hey guys, could you give me an opinion on this potential site layout? I'm redesigning my fantasy sports site as I found the old theme too grey.

Image of current design

Image of new design (WIP)

I know I'm bias, but I really like the newer design. The frontpage allows for more dynamic content and is more modern. The general colour scheme is also more inviting. The only issue though is that I think the new one may not work for a sports site and the old one still looks classier. If you were a first time visitor, which one will attract you more to have a look around?

The new one looks miles better =] my only criticism would be the Round 1 on the left sticks out and looks out of place.

The new design looks more convenient and user-friendly, but I kind of like the colour scheme of the old design more.

Agreed on both counts. Just shove that Round 1 so it's vertically in line with the 'D' from Dream and I think it would look just fine.

The search box on the new design is a bit too clunky looking, imo.

Is there a car stereo head unit that I can directly plug my iPhone into? Everything I've seen connects via USB or plain ol' aux cable. I want something that I can literally plug my phone into. Does anything like that exist?

Updated Site Design

Made a couple of changes based on some very good suggestions.

I made the ad on the right smaller to fit it in. I think it looks a lot better now. Thanks for the advice :)

Yeah, I feel that the old colour scheme looks a bit classier (reminds me of a newspaper), but some of my users wanted something more 'colourful'. I think new users in general will be more attracted to a lively design, especially since the target audience is teenagers.

It didn't really bother my too much until you pointed it out. Doesn't really flow with the design.

I changed it up a bit. Compare it to the old one and let me know what you think.

Driving home I approached an intersection with a yellow light. I was going to drive through it but it changed to red so I slammed on my breaks to make my stop.

I noticed two flashes, meaning I was photographed.

I did not however go through the intersection.

Will I be ticketed?

It doesn't matter if you are ticketed or not, you're not obligated to pay those things.

Anyone able to recommend a nice controller for PC that is similar in feel to a PS3 controller? Wired is fine, off brand is OK.

What is the patron saint for people born on Mondays?

I read in Eat, Pray, Love that Shiva the Destroyer is the patron saint for Friday babies - I want to know if mine is as bad ass but haven't had any luck with google.

Maybe someone more familiar with Hindu (or any other kind?) religion will know?

What's the best way to exchange currency? Will my bank do it cheaply or should I find a dedicated place?
