Starhawk (Closed) Beta Testing thread of impressions and questions.

This just in: Dogfighting in this game blows ass.

On paper it's good, but man Warhawk just trounces it. Weapons that fire at the enemy instead of going off willy nilly.

If they can just correct the speed of the aircraft and the weapons the game will be in a better place.

Edit: but yeah, trying to take down a jetpack without a rocket launcher is nigh on impossible.

If your playing against somebody that actually knows what they're doing even using a rocket launcher it's impossible to kill a guy on a jetpack. All the person needs to to is hit "O" and the rocket it off of him and by the time you lock on again they'll probably land.

Ok to keep hating the game? :P

Played some Warhawk again last night and man, I'm pretty much preferring the G2A and rough balance of Starhawk more now. Spawning with a viable weapon means you're no longer wasting time waiting for a weapon to spawn. Even if you know where the weapons are if someone snatches it before you, you're stuck waiting for it to re-spawn.
.

wait, are we canceling the demonstrations outside Sony HQ in SoCal, asking for them to disband Lightbox? Nobody told me, i already got everything prepared for picketing.

Nope.

Game still has many things to iron out before it's worth a damn.

I just don't want to trade swarms of gigantic bees for swarms of little douchebags that are nigh invulnerable.

Played both games again this afternoon. The dogfighting in Starhawk isn't on par with Warhawk. Jetpacks are too damn grief worthy. No joke, Lightbox has traded Warhawk base rape for Jetpack base rape. Which is worse when your team is doing nothing useful, not defending, not repairing (hugely important), and just generally losing their shit while the enemy team not only controls the map; but all of the rift energy leaving you at a disadvantage far worse than base rape in Warhawk.

At least in Warhawk pickups would randomly respawn. In Starhawk if nobody has the sense to set up and defend a bunker; then you're screwed. Hope you pick your targets well as your machine gun and three grenades aren't going to last you terribly long.

Perhaps Lightbox should just remove the training wheels from the jetpack, where if you're over land it won't let you plummet to your death like it did in Warhawk.

It's going to be interesting to see the rest of the weapons and vehicles in the final game.

My new favorite dick move to keep skilled pilots off my ass is to always attack their hawk pads to ensure they can't get in the air. >:D

Had this one guy who is generally pretty good in the air on a server today, and I started blowing up all the hawk pads in his base - I checked the score board and he must have rage quit.

PROBLEM SOLVING!

First-off let me thank all of you for your help BETA-Testing Starhawk!

It has been incredibly beneficial to the game to have a group of thoughtful and vocal gamers put Starhawk through its paces and help the team here at LightBox Interactive refine the game!

Even as the we take the Starhawk Private BETA servers off-line today at 4pm Central, the team and I are hard at work putting the finishing touches on the 1.2 Update which will mark the beginning of our Public BETA.

The servers will be down for several days as we finalize the 1.2 Update and during that time, the forum will still be up and active so we can discuss and debate various aspects of Starhawk. We will also be deploying a series of Private BETA surveys for all of you to fill-out so our team here at LightBox Interactive can get some very targeted feedback -- So stay tuned!

There will NOT be the normal maintenance window at 2pm Central.

Lastly, please remember that anyone who was in the Private BETA is *AUTOMATICALLY* granted access to the Public BETA. So as soon as we bring the servers back on-line, you all will be able to play immediately. Well... after you download the 1.2 Update ofcourse ;-)

So DO NOT DELETE STARHAWK from your HDD. It is your ticket to immediate access to the Public BETA!

Thanks again for all your help BETA-Testing Starhawk and I'll be posting again later to discuss the transition from Private to Public BETA in a bit more detail.

As of Today, January 3rd, 2012 at 4pm Central time, the Starhawk Private BETA Servers have been taken off-line. They will remain off-line as we prepare the 1.2 Update and transition to our Public BETA.

Over the next several days, we have planned a series of surveys on a variety of Starhawk gameplay topics. This info will greatly help us here at LightBox Interactive and the first such survey is ready for you to fill-out!

http://www.lightboxinteractive.com/starhawk-beta-survey-1

This one has a few general questions but focuses mostly on the Hawk and Air Gameplay.

Please take some time to fill it out and let us know what you think. We'll keep you all posted on new surveys and when they ready for you guys to fill out. And as always, we'll be keeping our eyes on the boards and will be keep the communication going while we have the servers off-line.

Thanks Again Everyone -- plenty more Starhawk BETA Action is right around the corner!

So the public beta hasn't started yet right? I tried to redeem my UC3 code, I hope it doesn't screw over the code when it actually starts. =(

You just play the open beta from the same download from the private beta.

Nice, I'll see what they changed since the last time I played it a month ago. I wasn't too impressed with the non-objective/AKA: Deathmatch mode with the Starhawk gameplay it was currently.

Today marks the beginning of the Starhawk Public BETA!

We're incredibly excited to not only get our Private BETA Testers back into the game, but to invite a new group of players from around the world to join us as we help make Starhawk the best multiplayer game in 2012! We've got a lot of great content planed to be released during the Public BETA and, as always, please keep in mind that this is a 100% real BETA. It is not a DEMO! The Starhawk Public BETA is very much a work-in-progress and we feel it's critical do perform a real beta so when players buy the game at launch, they know they're getting a great experience even on day-1 rather than having to wait for a bunch of patches.

Now of course having you all simply playing Starhawk and having a great time certainly helps us here at LightBox Interactive, we would like to strongly encourage participation with our growing community! Simply check out www.StarhawkTheGame.com. Select your region and then click the "Community" button to be taken to the proper forum for your region! The team here at LightBox Interactive spend a lot of time reading the forums and interacting with the fans so your participation is much appreciated!

Our servers have come back online at 3pm Central Time with our latest 1.2.1 Update which includes the following changes:

Enabled Host-Migration server option.
Added Classic Warhawk Arcade Flight mode.
Added Build & Battle control panel to Sniper Tower.
Fixed bug causing player stats not to post.
Added support for 13 Languages.

Here are a few more details regarding today's 1.2.1 Update and a friendly reminder that we have performed a stats and XP wipe today so all players will be starting with a clean slate.

Host-Migrtation:
During the Private BETA many players were playing games simply to be presented with a black screen that read "The Host has left the game". This happened whenever the player who hosted the game quit. As of this 1.2.1 Update, the host will now "migrate" to another player if the original hosting player quits. While Starhawk is selecting a new host, players will experience a short period of game inactivity. This occurs as Starhawk "migrates" the world state to another player and updates the server connections.

You should also be advised that if you are playing in a game that's experiencing long delays in network communication with the host (approx. 10 seconds), a bit of orange text will be displayed in the upper right of your screen that reads "Network Stall". If bad network conditions persist, Starhawk will deem that host no longer viable to host a game of acceptable quality and host-migration will automatically be triggered.

The last point about host-migration is that it is a server option that is defaulted to ON. We know that some players like to host special games for set time periods or with special names, and this option is for just such occasion.

Classic Warhawk Arcade Flight Mode:
Due to very popular demand, we have brought back the original Arcade flight mode from Warhawk. You can select this new option from the Settings menu under "Flight Mode". Please know that this flight mode still requires some tuning as it's current implimentation is exactly what we developed for Warhawk and does have a much higher top-speed than Starhawk's Advanced and Normal flight modes. We fully anticipate that both Advanced and Normal flight modes will have their speeds increased and the new Classic Arcade mode will have its speed reduced a bit -- but we wanted to get player's opinions first.

Also a reminder that since Classic Arcade Mode is exactly what we developed for Warhawk, you will need to double-tap R2 for afterburner and a press-and-hold of R2 is for fast flight.

Please also understand that the parameters for the Classic Arcade Mode's organic missile dodging will be getting a balance pass during a future update.

13 New Languages Supported:
The Starhawk Public BETA will be a true global beta with players from around the world able to play against each other. As a result, we have added the following languages to Starhawk: English, Finnish, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish.

Once again, WELCOME to the Starhawk Public BETA and thank you for taking the time to help us test and refine the game before it's
release on May 8th!

Pretty ho-hum re-release of the beta. No new maps, vehicles, weapons or game types. And the standard game play has been completely unaltered. Oh well, hopefully the future patches will improve things.

Was about to complain about the missile dodging. Good to see they're already aware of it.

And still no improvements to the framerate I guess? As time goes by my hope is going down more and more...

The framerate has definitely improved since the private beta. I didn't find it much of an inconvenience but it was noticeable while flying in a hawk, which is much smoother now.

Still dislike it. Not my thing at all. Oh well. Looking forward to the single player MP training mode I guess. When new maps are added, I'll check em out.

Does the code that came with U3 work, or did I just miss the window? Because I still can't get mine to work.

EDIT: Just read a few posts above and got my answer.

Double tap turbo but not in proflight? What were you doing Lightbox? Sitting around with your thumbs up your poopers?! >:|

Man, public scrubs ruining beta. POD BEACON! SENTRY GUN! POD BEACON! SENTRY GUN! POD BEACON! SENTRY GUN! POD BEACON! SENTRY GUN!

I would say killing these idiots is fun, but it's really just tedious.

Please put a damned control panel on the pod beacons already so I can reclaim the damned things these n00bs keep dropping yo!

Just played two matches awhile ago. Played CTF and it seemed like all everyone does is just stay near their bases. Had one guy try to cap the flag from the enemy team but after that, nothing. I'm guessing people are still trying to figure everything out.

At one point I saw no less then 4 razorback garages all lined up in an enemy base. I know these people are new but it's like, come on it took me all of 2 seconds to realize I could use someones elses garage to get a vehicle, use your brain people. :\

I always get an "unable to connect to server" when starting up the game, using the private beta client. Any tipps?

Daily maintenance is 3-4pm everyday, but there was no maintenance today so that can't be it. I've heard of people having trouble connecting on wifi, could that be it?

... which menu ?

main menu. When you scroll quickly, it stretches to select multiple items. Just another thing to "look cool" instead of ease of use. Same thing with the main menu when you have to press start and wait for the dude to go through his animation.

Trick was to delete the save data. Worked afterwards.

Disapointed, feels the same as the first beta. Controls are janky, it's like running under water. Framerate still isn't optimized as far as I can tell. Maybe it's a bit better in a warhwak, but it's not good. And that's something that HAS to be there in a competitive online MP game. As a hardcore warhawk player I'd say: I wouldn't even think about buying this in it's current state.

:(

Dude what do you expect, this is a beta, do you even know what that is?
If you want to play a polished version wait for the demo.

Played a few matches today.

Dunno what to do or expect at first, but after building a jetpackdispenser take jetpack, fly to enemy flag, which was surrounded by 3 walls and 1 Hawk, lift off in air, shoot the Hawk, drop grenade on him killing him. Drop in center of the walls to capture flag, run away like hell, get picked up by team mate in a Razor for escort to base and finally capping it, made me feel totally badass. Loved it.

Jetpacks are even more fun than the Hawks.

I think the general gameplay is great, except for needing a few tweaks here and there, but I'm really disappointed with how restricted the public beta still is. Some of us have been playing these same 2 maps for over a month, LBI really needs to drop something new into the mix.
