Starhawk (Closed) Beta Testing thread of impressions and questions.

Jetpacks are even more fun than the Hawks.

Jetpacks are frighteningly dominant in the beta, and Lightbox needs to address it. Being resource constrained and getting base raped by jetpackers who control all the Rift Energy is worse than a base raping w/ glitches in Warhawk. Enemies start building up walls with sentry guns in your base and your team gets cut to ribbons.

Dude what do you expect, this is a beta, do you even know what that is?
If you want to play a polished version wait for the demo.

1. I played plenty of betas where I said to myself "wow this is fun, I have to buy this".
2. There is only so much polish one can apply in about two months left...

Have you played the beta since it started up again?

Frame rate is a bit better now on the space map. I haven't bothered much with hawks since it started up again, so I can't comment on Acid Sea.

Yeah, I did yesterday after reading the comments in the offical forum that the framerate is so much better. I expected a huge improvement but it feels like it didn't improve at all, only a tiny bit if anything. Game still feels like under water where in Warhawk I always felt like I'm 100% in control of every motion. I just can't stand it.

I've gotten used to the reduced game speed, and on the ground the frame rate is still not as noticeable.

Then again I'm having fun getting 10k points more than the knuckleheads on my team and everybody quitting the game. :D

I'm not GOOD. I'm just persistent. Which is a trait I had in Warhawk, but it's definitely more rewarded in Starhawk due to the game design.

Hopefully they can polish it up into something you can enjoy too. I'm still holding out hope for more game balances and tweaks to the controls.

Haven't downloaded the new beta yet. Is it the same as the closed one content wise? Still small maps? I want to play the big ones to check how the frame rate is there.

I always get an "unable to connect to server" when starting up the game, using the private beta client. Any tipps?

I have the SAME problem, i'm using the old data of the private beta ... i have just deleted the game saves but no way, same error...

Any help?

Tks :)

Question. How do you go about getting the repair gun? I tried looking all around the supply bunker when I create one, but I never find it. I only found it once yesterday because someone died and dropped it. I have no idea where to get.

Loved it. Been playing since yesterday for several hours. This is really addicting. I must accept I've never played Warhawk, so i don't see most of the problems pointed out here.

I have seen them located around the maps, they are on little weapon spawn points - at least that's where I have picked them up from - on Acid Sea There is one on the small expanse of land between the two long roads

The repair gun is only available at certain locations on the map. I think the gun is only on Acid Sea. The map pick up on Space is the proximity mines.

No buildings give the repair gun, they're located in 2 spots on each map. On Acid Sea one is located on the right side of each spawn. Standing in your spawn looking towards the middle take the small right side path and just outside the spawn area you'll see it on the edge of the road. On Space the repair in is to the left of each spawn. Again stand in your spawn looking towards the middle go left, under the small bridge and straight ahead near the edge of the map is the repair tool.

And in case anyone is unaware the repair tool is also a destroy tool. Just as effective at destroying enemy buildings as repairing your own buildings.

I really like beta ....
first few minutes is a little chaotic since you dont get most of the things in game but after a while its getting very addictive ;)

graphics is great _ gameplay is really good and it reminds me Warhawh a lot
big Mechs are super fun to play with - jetpacks are amazing too /
shooting is much better then warhawk but still theres simillar feeling to it so its really nice

I only miss big Tanks and bigger maps _ both of the maps looks a little tight
I like that in Warhawk you could feel space and levels was pretty open and big

some really cool stuff there !
can/t wait for full version

These maps are listed as small, so I expect that there will at least be medium and large as well. I hope that Lightbox brings back modular map design so that we can get every environment in every size.

I also assume that there will be tanks (or something similar) in the final build - perhaps built from the same structure as the Razorback. There are also a few build slots that are empty so that should imply a few more structures and at least 2 more weapons (based on the weapon wheel).

On a different note - and it is obviously unlikely at this point - but I would love to see them do away with Spawn Beacons and instead have set expansion points on each map that can be taken over by either faction (much the same as areas in Warhawk). As it stands at the moment, expanding out of your base takes is too cumbersome (or results in people placing beacons in dubious locations), and if you are getting camped you are generally too resource strapped to change the tides. Having set locations that you could take control of (that would perhaps allow you to take over enemy structures as well) would go a long way to helping map control remain fluid.

I would also like to see you be able to purchase vehicles from enemy structures (perhaps at a cost of 1.5x normal). I loved sneaking into a base with another player in Warhawk, grabbing the flag and then stealing a jeep for the trek back while another team mate jacks a tank! I fear that that type of gameplay will be impossible in Starhawk and that many of the current systems encourage building elaborate base mazes resulting in drawn out stalemates.

Big patch today:

Starhawk Public BETA Update 1.2.2
Friday, January 20, 2012 At 12:40PM

Today's 1.2.2 update for the Starhawk Private BETA was deployed during the rescheduled server maintenance at 4pm Central and contained a large number of changes:

Homing Missiles and Swarm Lasers now begin homing far more quickly.
All 4 speeds have been greatly increased for Normal & Advanced flight modes.
Advanced flight afterburner now requires a double-tap of R2.
Advanced flight now has high-engine speed on press-and-hold of R2.
Afterburner speed for Arcade mode has been reduced slightly.
Increased Swarm Laser targeting range & reticle box.
Hawk Flare cool-down time has been lengthened.
Hawks now decelerate far more quickly when transforming from flight to mech mode.
Lowered the Hawk Mech stomp attack camera.
Camera in Arcade flight mode has been pulled a bit further back.
Missile Scrub values for "canned" dodges have been slightly increased.
Hawk off-screen target tracking time has been increased slightly.
Sniper Rifle aim assist while scoped has been increased slightly.
Increased firing time for Razorback turret before over-heat.
As you can see we've made a large number of changes with this update mostly focused on flight gameplay. Listed below is a bit more detail on the changes and why we made them:

Flight Speed Adjustment:
A common discussion among the BETA Testers in the Starhawk community has been that the Hawk felt slow & sluggish. And with our recent re-instatement of Classic Warhawk Arcade mode, we felt that we needed to bring the speeds of Normal and Advanced flight up considerably. While doing so, we reduced the speed of Arcade mode afterburner by a bit (still very, very fast) to make sure that all 3 flight modes were truly unified with regard to speed.

We have also re-enabled double-tap of R2 on Advanced flight mode to trigger afterburner while a simple press-and-hold or R2 will engage high-engine speed. This was to give advanced pilots more control on their turning radius while dogfighting much like we did in Warhawk. Please also note that the double-tap for afterburner is still intact for Arcade flight mode.

Missile Homing and Trajectory:
Another issue plaguing the air gameplay in the Starhawk BETA has been that Homing Missiles and Swarm Lasers were not tracking their targets quickly enough. This resulted in a number of unsavory consequences. First, defending pilots had a lot of time to maneuver and scrub missiles and in some cases, pilots were almost un-killable with missiles. Secondly, Swarm Laser salvos and Homing Missiles would often look like they weren't tracking their targets at all because of how long they would stay in straight flight before their homing systems would kick-in. Today's update sees a radical change by fully eliminating the homing delay on Swarm Lasers and reducing the homing delay on Homing missiles down to 0.2 seconds.

It should be noted that while we did make a small alteration to the missile scrubbing with this update, the almost complete removal of the homing delay has made a massive impact on the dodging and air gameplay of dogfights -- making it more challenging. That said, we will continue to monitor the gameplay and combat analytics and see if further updates are required.

Hawk Transform Deceleration:
Landing the Hawk exactly where you wanted was very difficult due to the momentum of the Hawk when it transforms and often resulted in player frustration. Today's change is intended to help that by making the Hawk decelerate *FAR* more quickly when transforming. With today's update, the Hawk will come to a nearly immediate stop when transforming with only a tiny amount of drift.

Please also be aware that this change largely impacts deceleration forward/backwards and side to side. There is still far more momentum in the upward direction than we are happy with and we will be addressing that in a future update.

Camera Adjustment in Arcade Flight:
Today's update brings an alteration to the Arcade flight camera intended to help reduce the amount of screen space the Hawk consumes. In the first deployment of Arcade flight, the Hawk was often causing large obstructions and resulting in a loss of combat awareness.

MISC. Weapon Updates:
The 1.2.2 update also contains a variety of other weapons updates:

Sniper rifle has received a slight increase in aim assist while in scoped mode and scoped mode *ONLY*. "No-scoping" is still 100% player skill.

The Hawk flares now take longer to recharge in an attempt to help increase the combat effectiveness of missiles while dogfighting. For players new to Starhawk, Flares are deployed by pressing R3 and scrub *ALL* missiles currently locked-on your Hawk.

The range at which Hawk pilots can begin aquiring lock with Swarm Lasers has been increased. In addition, the Swarm Laser targeting box -- the region around the on-screen reticle where locks can occur -- has been slightly increased.

Razorback turrets can now handle far longer periods of sustained fire before over-heating.

The Hawk's off-screen target tracker has been updated to track the designated target for a slighting longer amount of time. For players that are new to Starhawk, the target tracker is the faint circle in the HUD that is drawn on the last aircraft you hit with your Hawk's MG. This will aid you in tracking enemy pilots during intense dogfights. Furthermore, if that pilot flies off-screen, you will see a white arrow point in the direction you need to turn to re-aquire your enemy. However, if your enemy stays out of your view *OR* out of Line-of-Sight for a period of time, you will loose your target tracker and will have to re-engage.

Impressive. Can't wait to try it out later.

My issues and why I may hate this game are as follows:

Rocket launcher... I press and hold R1 like warhawk but it fires? How do I wait for a lock on? Can't lock on to a jetpacker? Can this game explain any of this to me?

Every building object looks the same. Especially amongst the environments. Walls, turrets, garages, what have do not have a distinctive look. I don't even know what the difference between friend and enemy are ffs.

BnB. Don't like it at all. I'd get over it if the previous issue got sorted out. It's also not that fun farming for points just to get what you need only to find out someone else plopped the same thing and you get yelled at. A little green triangle within a green zone on map is shitastically useless when I'm trying to decipher what is what and where.

I played this for an hour and the game hard froze. I had to hold down the power button to turn the console off (PS3 fat).

I didn't use it for a few days, and the next time I turned it on it told me my hard drive was corrupt and had to run a diagnostic to recover it. It ran the diagnostic for about 30 minutes, then rebooted, and everything seems to work now.

Is that common when using betas? I've never seen my PS3 do this, and I've had it since launch.

I think an update entitled the system to always do the diagnostic thing when it freezes. So that part isn't anything to worry about. And sure, freezes do happen with betas or any game with untested programming.

Mine did too. Thought this PS3 was breaking.
Good thing I own two!

Maybe have a look in the options but this hasn't been an issue for me. It is just like Warhawk, press and hold to lock on and you can lock on to jetpacks. I agree, the game needs more visual (and audio) diversity but I really like BnB. Eventually you start remembering which little icons are which but it still could be handled better.

I meant the part about the diagnostic running. I've had my PS3 hard lock tons of times, but never saw that scary diagnostic run.

Didn't realize it was enabled in a recent update, thanks.

I don't know that for a fact but every time I've locked up recently, it'd perform it so that's what I'm going on. Never did in the past.

The repair gun is only available at certain locations on the map. I think the gun is only on Acid Sea. The map pick up on Space is the proximity mines.

Sorry man, this is incorrect.

All the pick ups are on both maps.

On the Space map move to the left of the Rift Energy Generator all the way to the other side, under the bridge. On there is a pad where the Repair Tool is.

On the Acid Sea the repair tool is on the dirt road leading out of your base closest to the sea.

Mines always spawn near the Outkast side of the map. Ammo boxes near the Rifter side of the map.

Signing in now. Cannot wait to try the flying tweaks. Thank you for listening Lightbox! :D

Holy shit!

Starhawks feel much better now! :O

Holding down R2 doesn't really seem to help when you're in the air, but it is noticeable when you're close to the ground.

Missiles don't fly all the f*ck over Jobe's creation now.

Camera pulling out when you stomp is a bit weird. Doesn't help me at all.

Machine gun feels more potent.

Swarm missiles lock on from waaaay far back now.

Digging the changes, but I think the Swarms will need to be tweaked.

FINALLY! Flight is worthy. :D

Starhawks are underpowered as shit and dogfights are lame. The maneuverability is just not there

I have purposely been spending most of my time on the ground so I can get a better feel for the mechanics/flow of the game, but I've spent a tiny bit of time in a Hawk. The lack of hover mode really throws it off for me. I'm sure it will feel better once I spend more time actually flying, but the little time I've spent with the Hawks wasn't as pleasant as my memories of Warhawk.

Oh shit, I forgot that I have PS+ right now from that email for 3 free months Sony sent me last month. I'll download this tonight.

Never played Warhawk for more than a couple hours, but I did really enjoy what I played.

Have you played it with the new patch? I used to think the same but I think it's pretty much perfect (aka Warhawk) now. They're still underpowered against ground troops but dogfights are fantastic.

Lack of hover used to be jarring for me too, but using L2 is very useful. It slows you right down, enough time for you to get your bearing and continue.

I don't think you need to apologize for a factual correction. I guess it is just sad that I have never picked up proximity mines on Acid Sea, nor had them used against me.

Tonight is the first time playing so I guess. And I don't like it at all. Is there any way to spin around really quick or slow down going forward? I'm trying to lay some airstrike on bases but I go way to fast and it takes forever to turn around

EDIT: Reading the next part of your post might have been an intelligent idea lol will try immediately

Rocket launcher- hold down L1 and the lock-on will begin automatically if you are targetting a hawk or jetpack, not sure about jeeps. You can set it back to Warhawk style controls from the options menu.

I really like the BnB but I agree, maps need icons! do not want to have to waste time running around the whole base to see if someone has built a jetpack dispenser already.

like i was advised earlier, change flight controls to "Classic Arcade" makes it much more like the original warhawk, meaning you can do a loop to turn around quickly.

To turn - learn to fly.

To brake - Press L2.

Tried last night....

Matchmaking never works...

If i go to the listings and see 13 out of 16, never make it in. I only made it into one match that had a 2/16. Then just drove around in a buggy for 15 minutes....

This reminds me of the guy that goes to the doctor joke.

"Doc, it hurts when I do this."

"Then stop doing that."

Your safest bet is 10/16 servers. It would be nice if LBI would turn on sorting so you could find an open server quicker like in Warhawk. It's there in the menu, just not active yet.

I hope we get to see more weapons for the Hawks and ground troops soon.

I wonder if the other weapons will be pickups or in the supply bunker as well?

Downloaded this earlier and just tried to play it. I couldn't connect to a single game. Matchmaking didn't work, so I went to the server lists but it wouldn't let me connect to any games in there either. It just came up with some error and then stayed on a loading screen forever until I quit the game.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any way to "fix" it? I'll probably try to play again later today.

Hi!

I have downloaded the public beta via PS+ and now i'm wondering if there's still no option to party up in the beta. I'm trying to join a fellow GAFer, but have no idea how. Is the only current option for us to play a game together to join the same server?

I managed to play one game, but now I keep getting the "Failed to Connect" message again and I can't get into any more matches. Hope they fix this soon.

Anyway, that one game I played was pretty fucking awesome. I was mostly just figuring out the controls and how to play (only got 2 kills and 3 deaths in a TDM), but it was super fun. Again, I never owned Warhawk and only played it for a few hours one night when my friend rented it, but Starhawk seems so fun to me. Flying around is awesome, and then transforming into a mech and wrecking some shit on the ground, only to transform and fly off again afterwards is so fucking cool. The game controls pretty smoothly once I started getting the hang of it. Can't wait to play some more.
