I listened to Gil Brandt do a draft on the radio a few years ago. He's awesome. I'm pretty sure he is senile and mostly insane, but hilarious as shit.

So much for that whole "Raiders never hire DC's"

It was actually "Al never hires DC's" and it was true since Madden retired. Al liked hiring young offensive minded coaches and then he'd pretty much run the defense himself. It's a new era, feels very strange.

I really think a lot of this is coaching. The thing people bring up about Eli is that if he makes a mistake he is absolutely fearless in his ability to keep throwing to tight windows. I think defensive coordinators are the worst types of coaches to nurture young QBs. To them, all they preach is "don't throw INTs". But that not productive. You want your QB to make throws. If all you teach him is to be super scared of turning it over, how is he supposed to operate when he has to throw to win?

A big part of what screwed up David Carr was Capers doing this. Made him constantly second guess himself and hesitant to throw. Carr never was a TO machine, but then he never learned to play QB

Alex's biggest problem by far is that he doesnt throw picks. You need a QB that is willing to take chances and can force passes into small windows. I never understand why teams with good defenses are so conservative on offense. Even if Alex turns it over that D can make stops and get the ball right back.

He'll likely get a 3-6 year deal that will average out to somewhere between $8-12m a season. What won't be obvious is I'm betting the Niners put in a load of clauses that allow them multiple outs after the first year or two, something our GM Baalke is very fond of.

I'm really hopeful we draft a WR in the first round (Jeffrey?) because we need it. Crabs just isn't cutting it. He has spurts of great play, but his release and separation skills are inconsistent. He's an awesome number 2, and an ok number 1. Losing Morgan for the year turned out to be more harmful than originally thought.

Smith needs another playmaker, and if he gets that and improves in the system next year roughly the same amount he did this year, he might crack Top 10. Might. Worth taking a shot IMO.

He should get a 3 year deal worth about 10 per year. I think that sounds reasonable.

I knew losing Morgan was going to hurt, he is finally in a system that utilizes his strengths as a receiver. We REALLY need to sign Dwayne Bowe or Marques Colston, that would easily put this offense over the top.

WR1 - Bowe
WR2 - Crabtree/Morgan
WR3 - Morgan/Crabtree/Ginn
Death Penalty - Kyle Williams
TE1+2 - VD and Walker

Add in Gore and Hunter who are both excellent pass catchers? Top 10 offense. The only real wildcard is Smith. If he can build upon this last season and be more of a risk taker, we could win the Super Bowl.

The defense is already elite.

i'll take bowe. no thanks to colston. i feel like he is a product of drew brees and he has no speed

That makes sense when Al was alive, but he's dead and they did it again.

Did you see what he was able to do with Denver's D, even with no OTA's and whatnot? That unit was damn near worst in the league during the McDaniels era and Allen got it turned around in a short amount of time. That's why he was hired, our defense has been inconsistent and mostly shit.

I think Allen did a good job, but he was still inconsistent. If you look back at the games we had some really good defensive games, with some blowouts or high scoring games mixed in. He also had quite a bit of talent to work with, Miller, Dumervil, Ayers, Bunkley, Champ, Dawkins, Williams, etc. I wish he would have stayed longer to provide stability and build on what he started, but what can you do?

It's interesting that we have three defensive minded coaches in the division now, Fox, Crennel, and Allen. Should make for some interesting games going forward.

You have to do it for more than 1 year to be considered in that level. You can ask packers fan

We've been doing it for years, only difference was this year we had an offense (lol) to back it up. The bane of the 49ers the past 5 years has been turnovers, the defense has always been solid but all the turnovers put the D on the field too long. It's no surprise the year we cut down on turnovers the defense plays lights out.

All of the defense is young, too. I think the oldest player is Carlos Rogers who will be 30.

probably old but should be added to OP

The defense was the only reason Tebow didn't get his ass benched. They did all the work, while he got all the credit. Pretty much that same group on D were ranked almost dead last in every category in 2010. Allen was the real miracle maker in Denver.

I imagine he interviewed really well. Most people were expecting McKenzie to go with someone from the Packers or someone else he had ties to. I think it says a lot that Allen got the job over more experienced candidates and candidates that McKenzie is familiar with.

Nah, the 49ers D has been pretty good for a few years. But with the emergence of Navarro Bowman, Justin Smith, Culliver, and Aldon Smith, they are going to be soooo good for years on D. Rough stuff for the NFC Wests shitty offenses

this why u my boy! makes it very difficult to troll the lions because of beast :(

Are there any other good WR prospects for the first round the Niners could pick? We're 30th so they'd have to fall a bit.

It'd be great if one of them was also a returner.

Kendall Wright will go before you guys choose. Floyd could slip depending on whether he's just had a few isolated incidents or is a booze hound. Gil Brandt said it's not much of a draft at the top, and that the value is in the second round. So it's not the worst year to be picking late

That's a bit of a shallow view on the whole situation. Even with that being said, you have to look at a few things to see the bigger picture. The defense was working well because at the time it was symbiotic with the run game. The offense would eat clock, and run, and run, and run. The defense was allowed to rest and opposing offenses where given less time and opportunities to score. When the run was eliminated, and the offense was ineffective, the defense suffered as you may have saw in some of the blowouts or high scoring games.

Tebow was shoddy in a lot of those games, but to his credit he allowed for the defense to rest, and in return they kept it close. Likewise the ball doesn't march itself into position to win games. The run game rightfully garners some of the credit in making the defense better. Add into the fact that we were healthy for a good portion of the Tebow run, and you have the makings of a decent defense.

2010 was a bad year, but that's what you get when you have a head coach that is pass heavy, and thinks of defense as an afterthought. It didn't take much to improve upon what was there, and Fox/Allen made it work.

Good luck with Allen. He's a good hire.

I am not talking about being good. 9ers played like top two defense this year. And that offense needed every single bit of that top two defense in the NFL.

No question they have some pieces. But, I have seen many times how things can change for dramatic the next year. Even for top rated defenses.

If they are going to be dominant again next year then I will agree. But not right now. Elite year but I wont call them elite defense yet.

aren't you excited about matt stafford? maybe he should stay healthy for more than 1 year to be considered a decent qb

I am excited about Matt Stafford. But, no he is not an elite QB level right now. He had an elite year. But needs to do it again to be in that category.

Damn Gil Brandt says Tannehill could be a top 10 pick. Not so much his evaluation but from league people. That would be insane if he went that high. But I could totally see the Redskins do that instead of trading up for RG3. He's supposedly perfect for that system, but has to sit for year.

Did he write something up or was he on the radio? Once the QB class was settled you could pretty much put him in the top half of the draft, especially with what went down last year. Flynn is out there but if you think about it, he's probably going to make more money than a rookie. Comes down to evaluation, but with rookie comp being cheap it's no longer a big risk to take a guy.

Because the Niners have had a good D for years, but their offense has turned the ball over for years. This year, they get a much better +/- turnover ratio and go from yearly losers to nearly being in the super bowl. I'd consider that a good argument for why.

everything is a risk in this league. look where an aggressive "dont give a fuck if i throw INT's!" type attitude got the saints. i think in this league you do whatever gives you the best chance to win. everyone wants to ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK and keep just attack your opponent and i think everyone tries to do that in their own way.

would we have been 13-3 if alex threw the ball 40 times a game and just let it loose? i don't know, but considering the season we had this year i'll go with what was working

Agreed. The two Smiths are incredibly talented, and they're going to be causing nightmares for the NFC West for years to come as long as they keep that core together.

Peter King's podcast. That's really the only noteworthy part of the whole thing, though he likes the Iowa OT over Kalil

If there's any guy who people are getting excited about, it's Weeden. But he's actually a week older than Rodgers. I wonder where he'll be drafted. I'm not even sure that's a concern. Not like he'll decline while under the rookie contract

Marino, Peyton,Brady and probably others had/have Head coaches that came from the defensive ranks so I doubt that is a factor.

Shula and Mora were from the era where you were happy if you had over a 1:1 ratio on TD/INT ratio. Belichick is one of the best coaches whoever donned a camera and knew he had to evolve with the league. It's not meant as some hard and fast rule. Just the notion that instilling a fear of TOs is detrimental to a young QB's development. Ground and pound types

I've been a Manning fan since his college years and have followed him ever since. I'm one of those fraud Colts fans that only rooted for them because they drafted Manning. I've read plenty of articles, read fan opinion, and listened to many analyst give there opinions about Manning and the Colts future. At this point, not only do I hope he comes back, I hope he comes back in a different uniform now. This isn't about how he needs to stick it to the Colts(if they cut him) and his doubters. I just want to see him make a few more runs before his retirement and I want to see it done in a organization that will really want him because it seems like he's on his way out in Indy. Plus it would add to his legacy if he can revitalize another franchise and possibly win a Super Bowl with them before he retires.

I'm gonna do the same, but I have no clue which seats are any good, I assume that the Boxseats are pretty good at Wembley?

The tickets go on sale Februari the 2nd by the way.

I think it's a bad situation for both sides. The Colts cannot wait on Manning to get healthy, if he ever gets healthy. He would also count $35 million against a $120 cap. They cannot, as an organization, pass on drafting a QB when they may never get a chance to get one as good as Luck. If Peyton were 100% healthy, then they could consider trading the pick to restock the roster. They have to be careful, b/c their fans are so attached to Manning. They don't wait to be seen as cruel in ditching the guy who essentially validated the Indianapolis Colts.

For Peyton, he obviously doesn't want to be part of a rebuild, especially if a stud QB is waiting the wings. But he also doesn't want to look as if he's forcing his way out b/c the Colts wouldn't do what he said. It's basically a PR battle at this point, and I don't understand why Irsay and Peyton don't sit down and figure out a way to make his exit mutually beneficial.

edit: Kravitz on the interview

Dungy thinks Tressel will be the coach fwiw. That would be fantastic for comedy's sake. Peyton asked Kravitz about that as if Irsay was crazy enough to even think of doing it

I've never had a box seat so couldn't tell you. I'll probably get tickets in the third tier again but along the sidelines. The cheapest with the best view.

Can anyone lead me towards a primer on the intricacies of the return game (on both sides of the ball)? Seems like there's a lot more to it than you could ever discern from watching on tv.

They gonna cut him, he's due a huge bonus late next month or March(forgot that date) but there's a clause in the contract in which the Colts could get out with almost zero ramification, I think if he was smart he would go to a team with a defense like the 9ers, with the 9ers i think he could win 2 more SBs and solidify his legacy..
