Am I missing something?
I'm not entirely sure how what was said by Iwata translates to "holiday release."
Apparently, they targetted a summer launch at first. But as expected, software is all but ready.
Well, regardless of how much more powerful the Wii U is compared to current gen consoles, I'm glad to note that there hasn't been a single rumor so far that suggested it's weaker in any way so I'm fairly content with that. Now, the more powerful the machine is the better, but my original high end hopes were that it would be as powerful as a 360, so it's already achieved that goal. (I thought Nintendo would stick with 256 MB of RAM if we were lucky)

It doesn't.
People just assume that "By the end of the year" means the last possible day.
lol no, Nintendo said, "No earlier than March, but before 2012 ends", or something on the lines of that.Last E3 they had said as early or April or even the summer.

No...
They said the soonest they would launch would be April.
The absolute soonest.
They never gave a "We'll release it around".
None of this even makes sense...
Why would they make it so much weaker than the 360 and expect it to go anywhere?
You would have been happy with a system that was equal in power to a machine released 6 years ago?
Um...haven't you heard of this thing called the Wii?
Not exactly. Iwata talked a lot about diminishing returns and all that, and I felt he sorta had a point, but the problem was, they were a generation too early.
So, not happy with the Wii, but moderately satisfied with Wii U.
Didn't Nintendo say fiscal year 2012 (march 2012 to march 2013)?
The Wii wasn't weaker than the XBox...
It may have been more powerful, but just barely.
Regardless, the point is that if Nintendo didn't have a problem being a WHOLE GENERATION behind without having their financials taking a hit, why would they kill themselves to go with any significant upgrade?
Re: Wi-Fi connection...
It still seems to be in use on the DS. I noticed this when looking at the Pokémon + Nobunaga's Ambition boxart last night.

wtf is that. looks... awesome?
So they are anticipating such a bad reception that they would otherwise know a bad launch, and need the holidays to sell out of what is to be expected a limited first shipment? They should launch earlier, make sure all the moms understand the WiiU isn't an accessory for the Wii by Christmass. Their first shipments should have no trouble selling out if the price is right in any case. They can then again, use the holiday season to further expand a few months later. That's what i would do. (EDIT: ofcourse, only if hardware and software are ready).
Because the Wii was lightning in a bottle that can't be repeated, and they know that.
There is no magical motion controls that can suddenly bring in those tens of millions of users again.
They need a sustainable platform this time around and cutting the 360 in half would have been the dumbest move any company has ever made.
Sounds like no Tomb Raider reboot for WiiU:

Hopefully Nintendo can get other big multi-platform games like at least RE6 and GTA V.

The Wii wasn't weaker than the XBox...
Better question, why are we always comparing it to 360? does PS3 not exist?
It's kinda odd...
Those two are easier to compare I guess. PS3 is a weird platform with exotic components that's very hard to gauge. Not to mention 360 was first and has more mindshare, so it's an obvious baseline to work with.Better question, why are we always comparing it to 360? does PS3 not exist?

I asked the same question yesterday
odd that everything is relative to the 360, but most would agree the PS3 is a stronger console.
*Shrugs*

XBox360 has a symmetric multi-core IBM CPU and an AMD GPU. The Wii U will have a (mostly) symmetric multi-core IBM CPU and an AMD CPU. In comparison the PS3 has a crazily asymmetric multi-core IBM CPU and a nVidia GPU, so the XBox360 is a much more relevant starting point for comparisons.
What are everyone's honest expectations from nintendo during this coming E3? Me? I'm cashing in all my chips and expecting the big N to go H.A.M. That includes first party games, relevant third party games, competent online and the games that make this new controller more than just a gimmick. Anything less I feel will be a massive disappointment.
Edit: If they do all of the above, count me in for day one.

Ehh, not buying it, "power" doesnt depend on any exotic architecture. The results on the screen dont matter to whats under the hood and that's what we're really comparing.
I'm expecting a surprise from Nintendo at E3. I'd love if the final model controller had a 3D screen like the 3DS or something unexpected like that. While that is an unlikely example - I'm sure there is something cool about the Wii U that we don't know about yet.
I hope it's the type of E3 where they paint with a broad brush and cover every angle of their new platform (E3 2010). I hope we don't get the Nintendo that deliberately downplays certain games because they want to focus on a specific experience (E3 2008).
I'm expecting BIG, though. I mean, I can't remember another E3 where Nintendo had so much ground to cover. Not even with the original Wii - where they really only had to introduce the console and show the controls to massive hype. With the Wii U, they're going to have to show how the Wii U is an evolution of the core principles of Wii, as well as clearly demonstrate how the Wii U is going to be a different experience altogether (HD gaming, quality online and all that entails, significant 3rd party support, innovative use of touch screen controls, etc.). AND they still have the 3DS to think about.
I think this is going to be the most jam-packed E3 we've seen from Nintendo in years. Hopefully Reggie gets with a speech coach so he can speak faster.
But we're not comparing results on screen yet because we don't have any finished games running on final hardware to compare between. What we do have are speculated specifications, and if they say that, for example, the GPU has 640 SPUs and runs at 700MHz, then it's a lot easier to say "That's X times more powerful than the XBox360 GPU" than "That's Y times more powerful than the PS3 GPU", because the former is basically just an earlier version of the same architecture, whereas the latter is a different architecture and hence more difficult to make "apples to apples" comparisons with. That's not to say that "X times more powerful than XBox360" is a particularly helpful comparison to make, just that it's an easier comparison to make.
Can you imagine how exciting it's going to be to see semi-final Wii U graphics for the first time? The meltdowns in either direction could be fantabulous.
That is if stuff doesnt leak prior, which it probably will.
I don't want any NOA employee on the stage although I know Reggie is going to speak. The guy has never given anything resembling a motivational speech since his introduction.I think this is going to be the most jam-packed E3 we've seen from Nintendo in years.
