I'm not impressed with the Hulk and Captain America posted above. But the LotR and Monster figures look excellent. Definitely going to try to keep on top of those lines and the Super Hero lines so I don't fall behind like I did with my favorite series (Harry Potter). I only have some of the early sets like the Sorting Hat and the first Gringott's and some of the ones that came out just recently like the Quidditch and Forbidden Forest.

whaaaaaat. I can see not liking the Hulk but Cap looks great. Will there be new Spider-Man sets? I want Lego to re-release a Spider-Man keychain to go along with my Admiral ackbar everywhere I go.

I'm not sure what rights they've acquired from marvel, but from my understanding it doesn't cover the Fox\Sony films, only the Marvel ones which is why wolverine is shown in his yellow\comic book costume in preview images. Not sure what that means for spiderman though but he's not in any of the initial run of sets.

That looks awesome bro. Gonna download it when I get home :D

They just released a new update that added a bunch of bricks and figs, too. LDD is pretty awesome if you don't have the bricks lying around to experiment with. Eurobricks has an entire forum area dedicated to LDD creations and associated tips/tricks.

wonder what scale it'd be? I'm guessing the player character would be minifig size. Does that mean a minifig creeper!?

parts-wise I'd expect this to be quite simple, and Lego Cuusoo are unlikely to want many custom parts. So maybe they'll focus on putting together an iconic diorama that sums up Minecraft?

Kind of wish they chose another concept. Minecraft sets = mostly 2x2 standard blocks. I could make that stuff with what I already have. Would have been more interesting to see something that doesn't already have a Lego look.

Oh good. Probably because they've stopped the ordering service. Always found the colour selection limiting.

They aren't stopping pick a brick from lego.com, only the 'designed by me' custom model parts from LDD.

Correct.

They also have Universe Mode unlocked by default in the new LDD. Before, you had to edit the *.ini file in order to access everything. This new build allows immediate access to all the available bricks.

Could you post a link to this?

A new version of LDD (4.2.5) was released today, January 18th. I just downloaded it. As expected, the main difference to the previous version (4.1.8) is the removal of DbM and LEGO Universe. The DbM and Universe palettes have been replaced by a LDD palette and the Extended Mode palette. This means that there is no longer any need to manually activate Extended Mode - it's there out of the box.

There are no new features compared to the previous version. On the other hand, a huge amount of new bricks have been added, along with new decorations and several brick bug fixes. I got a mail from Martin over at the LDD team who has compiled a "What's new" list specially for us hardcore LDD users - thanks for that Martin - and here are some stats for 4.2.5 (brickset version 604):

New bricks:
2507, 3482, 3711, 3960, 4474, 4740, 6573, 10201, 11055, 47330, 47998, 53445, 53551, 54654, 55704, 56630, 56908, 57999, 58118, 60803, 60902, 62537, 64804, 72039, 72454, 72475, 74698, 74968, 76766, 76768, 85557, 85558, 85959, 85974, 87585, 87794, 87805, 87808, 87812, 87814, 87841, 89201, 90634, 91176, 92088, 92092, 92230, 92231, 92259, 92279, 92402, 92709, 92712, 92906, 92912, 93140, 93274, 93587, 93590, 93591, 93593, 93594, 93595, 93597, 93598, 93604, 93606, 94148, 94161, 95052, 95053, 95054, 95109, 95198, 95199, 95200, 95202, 95203, 95204, 95227, 95228, 95229, 95292, 95319, 95343, 95344, 95347, 95350, 95351, 95674, 95820, 96858, 96859, 96874, 96904, 96905, 96906, 96907, 96910, 97492, 97895, 97927, 98011, 98072, 98085, 98087, 98089, 98100, 98128, 98129, 98130, 98132, 98133, 98134, 98135, 98136, 98137, 98138, 98139, 98141, 98143, 98147, 98153, 98263, 98279, 98280, 98281, 98282, 98283, 98284, 98285, 98286, 98287, 98288, 98313, 98342, 98347, 98365, 98366, 98367, 98370, 98371, 98372, 98373, 98376, 98377, 98378, 98379, 98381, 98383, 98384, 98385, 98386, 98496, 98549, 98562, 98563, 98564, 98566, 98567, 98568, 98569, 98570, 98571, 98573, 98574, 98575, 98585, 98608, 98721, 98722, 98723, 98725, 98726, 98729, 99061, 99207, 99253, 99780, 99784, 99809, 99930, 601948

Personally, I think it's great to see all the work that is going on with LDD behind the scenes at TLG. With this amount of new bricks and bug fixes, there seems no doubt that TLG is supporting LDD all the way.

I really need to learn how to use bricklink properly. On some orders I get double from the same supplier - new and used, how do you avoid that? I now have some parts three times over..

and how do you organise your inventories online? I used to use lugnet but it seems out of date these days. I need to be able to store full sets and loose parts, and be able to use that data to figure out what pieces I need to build other models.

I personally haven't run into any problems with my Bricklink'ing. I don't understand how you're getting double though - that's odd.

As for inventory management, outside of using Brickset + custom editing your inventory for loose orders, I'm unsure. When I parted out that dragon, I just made a spreadsheet with the parts list and went down the line. It was tedious, it was frustrating, and it was NOT fun. But it worked and was worth it. :)

If you discover a solid inventory management tool, I'd love to hear about it.

When I wanted to find the parts for Cafe Corner, I first used rebrickable to get a list of the parts I was missing, then I uploaded them to a wanted list in bricklink. From there it was fairly straightforward.

But as I add more loose parts, tools like rebrickable only work if I keep my parts list up to date. It can import parts from brickstore or peeron, but I don't know a good way to get them out of bricklink first. Will keep looking

I'm actually in the process of rebuilding all the modulars now, along with their mini versions, in time for Town Hall.

Should have Cafe Corner finished this weekend. I'd forgotten how bare the interiors were in the early modulars. And only three minifigs! Love how they've added more extras with each successive new model. So excited for Town Hall.

Okay, reading this thread is really making me want to pick up some Lego again. Any recommendations for good sets to jump back in with?

I'm looking for something that's reasonably challenging to build, displayable, and preferably sub-$100. The modulars, Tower Bridge, and the bigger Star Wars sets all look awesome, but I think I'll have to work my way up to that price range.

Right now I'm eying the mini modulars, or potentially the Jedi Starfighter that's on sale on the LEGO site. Any opinions on the starfighter?

Yeah, I'm looking for recommendations too.

I don't have it, but it hasn't received great reviews at Brickset:

However, at 40% off, that's a pretty good price. You may also want to take a look at Fallingwater for a display piece. You can get it for $85 with a 15% off coupon (A8N7K7X) at bn.com.

For anyone new to LEGO (or coming back to it), I posted this a while back:

Honestly, the best place to start would be deciding what about LEGO interests you. For me, being a structural engineer, buildings of any sort draw me in, as do landmark structures (read: Tower Bridge). Therefore, I mostly stick with modular purchases, grabbing random sets here and there for either MOC purposes or because the set looks cool/is cheap.

I realize that last line sort of contradicts my idea of finding a starting point, but that's exactly it - a STARTING point will help you grow your collection around what interests you.

If you think you're going to get into the MOC'ing (creating your own shit from the piles of bricks you have), you can start to explore sets based on that. If you are simply going for display, the larger ($$$) sets are more suited to your taste. If play is a factor, the smaller sets work wonders. These cheaper sets ($5-30) offer excellent parts and pieces to build your MOC inventory.

I know the info above is probably something you have little to no use for at the moment, but sometimes, just thinking about what side of LEGO intrigues you will help. Sarcastic or not in your comment on "where to start", there's a bizarre rush when opening that first big LEGO set in ages. :)

Hope that helps!

Yeah, Fallingwater looks really cool as well. I may have to read up about that one.

Thanks, that's good advice! I'm really liking the architectural stuff too. I'm really starting to lean toward picking up the mini modulars for a start, and then saving up for one of the bigger sets.

You're welcome! The Mini Mods are a great set that jump right into "badass looking builds", haha. It also dives into one of the coolest styles of builds (micro-scale). The creator series has some of my favorite models as well, including the:

Log Cabin
Lighthouse Island
Hillside House
Apple Tree House

These are all Creator series sets that are affordable and along the lines of architectural without being wallet busting. Obviously the Modular buildings (Grand Emporium, Fire Brigade, etc) are the most magnificent of all of the building structures, but those come in due time with your LEGO obsession! ;)

Another option would be the Shuttle Expedition - $100 for over 1200 pieces. Look back a page or two for Gary's pics.

Those Creator sets look pretty nice -- I like the details on the Apple Tree House like the mower and the basketball hoop. I'll have to look into that line.

Oh, nice... I had mentally taken that off the list because I assumed it would be in the $140-150 range. That's another cool looking set.

http://ldd.lego.com (Lego Digital Designer) to help you design your MOC. Didn't see it in the OP so i thought maybe it could be useful :)

With the latest update they added all these awesome new pieces and colors but I can't seem to find a lot of them in Lego.com's Pick a Brick. Am I missing something or are they just letting me virtually build something I can't do in real life?

Well I've decided to bite the bullet and order the new tie fighter and x-wing this weekend. Lego says they will be ready to ship on Jan. 30. anyone know any place that ships to Canada that has these in stock now?

I dunno if you'd be into the set but the Earth Defense HQ from the Alien Conquest line is really cool http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Earth-Defense-HQ-7066

The ship is a Vic Viper homage! Also it's on sale through the website for 72 bucks looks like (retail is 90) which is rad, I got it off Amazon for 70 myself so you can't do much better at 72.

You should pick up the Medieval Market Village while you still can (it's expected to be discontinued soon):

Holy crap, I really like this one. I'd just have no idea what to do with it after I built it :( Don't have a fancy display (and honestly would feel a bit strange about displaying a stock Lego fantasy set, dunno).

Damn :( Should I just search for it and buy it?

edit: 115 fucking euros just answered that question with a no. I'm not rich enough to be a LegoGAF member, I guess :D

I just build them, display them for a bit on my computer desk and then repack them. Building is the best part anyways!

Im going to lego land in chicago in a few weeks :) I'll take pics for everyone (if they allow it) Any specialty set i should buy?

I'm a proponent of no one talking about Megablocks.

Haha yeah I really like the look of some of the stuff Mega Bloks has put out (like the halo stuff) but damn if the quality isn't leaps and bounds below Lego (do not EVER use Mega Bloks with Legos).

hmm. Millenium falcon £104 at amazon UK. tempting. anyone got one? Would be nice to have a 'playable' set for my kids, rather than the more 'display' space shuttle. although the VW camper is pretty solid

Well as a kid my favourites big sets were always the bases. For vehicles/space ships I went with the smaller ones since I could handle them. Really down to what kind of theme your kids like. Could always give them a gander in the Lego catalogue.

My daughter and I just finished building this set yesterday...she did all the furniture and I did the buildings. It was a ton of fun to build and it's just full of clever little details. What's really great about it is that it's almost entirely stock pieces, so there are lots of options for your own designs. I just saw a MOC townhouse the other day that was built to go with the modulars and it looked fantastic. Honestly I am considering getting a second one before it goes away so I have the pieces to build a more fleshed out medieval village with a couple variants to serve as other buildings.

And if you don't already have one, having a kid helps with keeping a display up! :) My daughter plays with this stuff every single day.

P.S. talking about mega bloks in here should be bannable imo

All of the new sets have broken street date and are in stock at TRU in Hamilton, Ontario if you live around there, all TRUs should have them out now tho

Thanks for the heads up. I don't have one near by but they did have them listed as in stock on toysrus.ca so I ordered them from there instead.

I've seen the new Lego X-Wing and Tie Fighter at my local TRU here in the States but as usual they've marked up the prices...figure I might as well wait until I find them at other stores for retail price or cheaper.

Just out of curiosity, are all those custom Lego builds built by stock pieces, or is every brick basically a painted custom? Is it part of the fun to find the correct colors, or rather to paint them?
