I'm not sure what rights they've acquired from marvel, but from my understanding it doesn't cover the Fox\Sony films, only the Marvel ones which is why wolverine is shown in his yellow\comic book costume in preview images. Not sure what that means for spiderman though but he's not in any of the initial run of sets.

parts-wise I'd expect this to be quite simple, and Lego Cuusoo are unlikely to want many custom parts. So maybe they'll focus on putting together an iconic diorama that sums up Minecraft?

They just released a new update that added a bunch of bricks and figs, too. LDD is pretty awesome if you don't have the bricks lying around to experiment with. Eurobricks has an entire forum area dedicated to LDD creations and associated tips/tricks.
Kind of wish they chose another concept. Minecraft sets = mostly 2x2 standard blocks. I could make that stuff with what I already have. Would have been more interesting to see something that doesn't already have a Lego look.
Oh good. Probably because they've stopped the ordering service. Always found the colour selection limiting.
They aren't stopping pick a brick from lego.com, only the 'designed by me' custom model parts from LDD.

Correct.
They also have Universe Mode unlocked by default in the new LDD. Before, you had to edit the *.ini file in order to access everything. This new build allows immediate access to all the available bricks.

I really need to learn how to use bricklink properly. On some orders I get double from the same supplier - new and used, how do you avoid that? I now have some parts three times over..
and how do you organise your inventories online? I used to use lugnet but it seems out of date these days. I need to be able to store full sets and loose parts, and be able to use that data to figure out what pieces I need to build other models.

I personally haven't run into any problems with my Bricklink'ing. I don't understand how you're getting double though - that's odd.
As for inventory management, outside of using Brickset + custom editing your inventory for loose orders, I'm unsure. When I parted out that dragon, I just made a spreadsheet with the parts list and went down the line. It was tedious, it was frustrating, and it was NOT fun. But it worked and was worth it.
If you discover a solid inventory management tool, I'd love to hear about it.
When I wanted to find the parts for Cafe Corner, I first used rebrickable to get a list of the parts I was missing, then I uploaded them to a wanted list in bricklink. From there it was fairly straightforward.
But as I add more loose parts, tools like rebrickable only work if I keep my parts list up to date. It can import parts from brickstore or peeron, but I don't know a good way to get them out of bricklink first. Will keep looking

I've never used rebrickable, but Bricklink has an inventory of all the sets in existence.

I'm actually in the process of rebuilding all the modulars now, along with their mini versions, in time for Town Hall.
Should have Cafe Corner finished this weekend. I'd forgotten how bare the interiors were in the early modulars. And only three minifigs! Love how they've added more extras with each successive new model. So excited for Town Hall.

Okay, reading this thread is really making me want to pick up some Lego again. Any recommendations for good sets to jump back in with?
I'm looking for something that's reasonably challenging to build, displayable, and preferably sub-$100. The modulars, Tower Bridge, and the bigger Star Wars sets all look awesome, but I think I'll have to work my way up to that price range.
Right now I'm eying the mini modulars, or potentially the Jedi Starfighter that's on sale on the LEGO site. Any opinions on the starfighter?

For anyone new to LEGO (or coming back to it), I posted this a while back:

Thanks, that's good advice! I'm really liking the architectural stuff too. I'm really starting to lean toward picking up the mini modulars for a start, and then saving up for one of the bigger sets.

You're welcome! The Mini Mods are a great set that jump right into "badass looking builds", haha. It also dives into one of the coolest styles of builds (micro-scale). The creator series has some of my favorite models as well, including the:
Log Cabin
Lighthouse Island
Hillside House
Apple Tree House
These are all Creator series sets that are affordable and along the lines of architectural without being wallet busting. Obviously the Modular buildings (Grand Emporium, Fire Brigade, etc) are the most magnificent of all of the building structures, but those come in due time with your LEGO obsession!

Another option would be the Shuttle Expedition - $100 for over 1200 pieces. Look back a page or two for Gary's pics.

Those Creator sets look pretty nice -- I like the details on the Apple Tree House like the mower and the basketball hoop. I'll have to look into that line.

With the latest update they added all these awesome new pieces and colors but I can't seem to find a lot of them in Lego.com's Pick a Brick. Am I missing something or are they just letting me virtually build something I can't do in real life?

Haha yeah I really like the look of some of the stuff Mega Bloks has put out (like the halo stuff) but damn if the quality isn't leaps and bounds below Lego (do not EVER use Mega Bloks with Legos).

My daughter and I just finished building this set yesterday...she did all the furniture and I did the buildings. It was a ton of fun to build and it's just full of clever little details. What's really great about it is that it's almost entirely stock pieces, so there are lots of options for your own designs. I just saw a MOC townhouse the other day that was built to go with the modulars and it looked fantastic. Honestly I am considering getting a second one before it goes away so I have the pieces to build a more fleshed out medieval village with a couple variants to serve as other buildings.
And if you don't already have one, having a kid helps with keeping a display up!
My daughter plays with this stuff every single day.P.S. talking about mega bloks in here should be bannable imo
