This is good. $15 is a lot of money based on the salary those reps make.

Exactly

and it has nothing to do with the OS not being able to hold its own. It's money to try to have reps FINALLY share the fact that the OS is even an option.

i have been into several ATT stores many times over the past 14months and it is ridiculous how they do not even show people that there are phones from windows.

Isn't everyone doing this to some extend? I think AT&T reps get $10 per iPhone.

Even Microsoft didn't expect marketshare gains until this quarter. Hopefully the decent start from Nokia can continue and begin to make some headway. The first person at my job joined the club last week, so its a start!

Yeah sales incentives for retail employees is normal for the phone business. Wonder why it has taken this long for microsoft to be aggressive with it.

I love how that article assumes that Windows phone aren't selling based on the lack of the software's merit, as if the reason android has overtaken everyone else is the excellence of froyo and gingerbread over ios and mango. Lol.

Familiarity... diversity... price. Price isnt holding WP back.

The phone still needs to be easy to sell. 20 minutes to convince someone to buy a windows phone for $15 or 30 seconds to sell the iphone for $10.

So that Steam Mobile App...

Look I know I've been piling on as of late and all, but I know the Steam App seems like an easy target. Yet I feel like this is indicative of the platform as a whole software wise in terms of apps. If it's not something that was really directly money hat'ed or influenced by MS to get on the platform for major apps (ie not indie developers) the WP version is either an after thought or non existent all together.

Even when we do get some of these apps it's like WooHoo we got an app iOS and Android have had for months if not years now. Plus they don't tend to update the WP version as often either.

Problem is outside of money hat'ing at this point I'm not sure what else MS could really DO to get the mindshare of major companies and developers. I guess maybe open the system up to native coding without having to get permission, but beyond that I'm really stumped.

Why don't you just manually install the patch. It's fairly simple.

I looked at it and realized I would have to flash my phone twice since I'm still on 7720, so I just wrote it off. Would it preserve my settings and save states and all that?

Yep, even with this initiative, its still an uphill battle.

At least they are actively trying to engage the salesperson. Thats a start. They need to find something to make people want to see it/ use it

So that Steam Mobile App...

You made me google that, I thought Steam was releasing a mobile games store. Which actually would make a lot of sense on Android.

But yeah, the app situation isn't improving fast enough, if you are an app addict, iOS is the platform. They get all the niche apps, the blockbuster apps, and the games. If they had Android's hardware and WP7's UI, I wouldn't have jumped around from platform to platform in the past two years.

brotkasten said it best a page or two back when he said it's not that the platform isn't getting apps it's that the platform isn't getting the apps people care about.

The # of apps is climbing for the platform, but those aren't the apps that the really matter/platform needs.

It's simple. 2.7% marketshare is the reason WP isn't getting the apps (on time).

Even worse is the lack of CoD Elite app on WP7. Xbox is easily the premier platform for CoD, and yet WP7 can't get the Elite app.

Yup, there is no rim or webos app either. Its the major thing holding me back. I jumped in too early to android and dealt with the same shit, dont want to do it again, although i dont think wp7 is nearly as bad as the "it's open so it can be pirated" excuses from developers

For you Canadiens out there, Telus is having a 72hr sale where you can get a first gen WP (Surround or Optimus 7) for free on a one year contract. Pretty sweet deal. By the time your contract is up there should be some great WP's available.

What is the cheapest unlocked Mango phone I can get in the US? I have a friend on the Cricket carrier and I'd like to get them a WP. I came across this

No, SIM cards are used on cell phones with GSM cellular technology and Cricket cell phones use the CDMA cellular technology so there is no need for SIM cards.

So is this compatible with WP or not? No idea what it means

Cricket uses CDMA, which is what Verizon and Sprint use. They don't use SIM cards. Since your friend uses CDMA, they might be out of luck since there's only 2 CDMA Windows phones (that I know of). Even still, a carrier-branded CDMA phone might not work with another CDMA carrier. It's probably gonna be tough honestly.

If he's on Cricket, he'll need to use a CDMA phone, so the only two phones available are Verizon's HTC Trophy or Sprint's HTC Arrive. He'll have to find a way to flash the phones to that corresponding carrier. There are tutorials on YouTube and other places.

We're waiting for Godot Nokia.

You spelled Canadians wrong... ;)

So supposedly Samsung's new in house chip is up to 2ghz and doubles the performance of their current dual core chips along with a GPU bump. It also allows for powering a crazy resolution which I expect all major Android phones going forward to be at least 1280x720. Plus you know Apple probably has something similar resolution wise up their sleeve.

MS better be bringing it and well soon. It's going to be hard to wait till Sept if Apollo releases around the same time Mango + the initial run of Mango phones. With ICS already out, and a slew of new phones on the horizon like the Galaxy SIII as well as rumors of a new summer iPhone 5 I'm not sure if MS can get by with Mango for much longer past Q2 of this year.

Why? What do you expect it to do for Windows Phone?

Apollo brings the new kernel so we can get new hardware. Not that the current hardware doesn't already run smooth. It honestly does at the current single core spec with 512 RAM.

I'm personally more looking for a screen upgrade. 800 x 480 just isn't going to cut it in 2012, and we aren't going to be getting bigger screens until Apollo hits. I'll also assume a processor bump might be good in conjunction with a screen resolution bump to keep everything as smooth as it is currently. This will especially help companies like HTC that keep making larger phones like the Titan I/II.

Then again I know a lot of people are hyped about the Nokia 910, but I think you're crazy to buy a phone in 2012 with an 800 x 480 screen.

The Titan and the Lumia screens both look gorgeous IMO

They both look fine especially the Lumia since it's smaller than the Titan. That said is fine good enough when the competition either has or is going to have displays with double the amount of pixels?

What would you think if Samsung and HTC's Android offerings are all 1280 x 720 screens while their WP7 devices are still stuck at 800 x 480? We know the Galaxy SIII is going to probably one up the Galaxy Nexus spec wise, and don't think HTC doesn't have something else cooking as well. Plus we all know how Apple are screen whores, and their current device while smaller already has a higher resolution display let alone the 4S successor.

I don't get it. You know the roadmap, you know when and what will happen with windows phone spec-wise. If you don't like it, get another phone. WP is still smooth as fuck, without a 2 GHz quad-core and honestly, that's all I want from my phone. A higher res would be nice, but I know the next phones will get it, which is what I'll get and why i still have my first gen optimus 7.

The general public doesn't know fucking road maps though. Even with MS money hatting AT&T employees to sell the devices like everyone does, how will MS sell phones to the general public if the other two major competitors are always one step ahead?

Sure we all know shit is coming, but if someone who's not a techie or gadget person walks in this summer and sees a bunch of new phones whoring out their impressive new screens, and they then inquire about other devices they see to check if they match and they don't WTF do you expect the general public to do?

You know why we aren't getting apps on time? That low market share. How the funk is that going to improve is MS doesn't try to get out ahead of things?

Hopefully once they get onto a more modern kernel they can keep up a bit better. There are rumors that Apollo will bring support for multi-core Snapdragon & Samsung's Exynos SoCs. Also, NVIDIA's Tegra will be supported at some point, and there are rumors of T.I. as well.

That said, I think that new Samsung SoC is destined for tablets, not phones.

Seems reasonable. My personal assumption is that the Windows 8 core rumor for Windows Phone 8 is true and will use the WinRT base, which means that C++ is definitely an option and a requirement for any games.

Voice recognition seems to be poor. I sometimes need to say the name of the person several times before it recognises them. Other times I need say it only once, and its the same name in both cases by the way (as an example)

Never had any issues with voice dialing or opening applications.

Texts and voice search are not as accurate for me, but are serviceable when necessary.
