Also I am slightly exaggerating there as there are other instances where plot isn't terribly important, but, on a fundamental level, yes, plot is more or less a requirement for a fictional movie. A movie without a plot is either a documentary (though even then most documentaries have some form of plot) or an art project.

Even in the case of something like a 4-koma gag manga where each gag has absolutely nothing to do with the next, each 4-koma set is a plot. The medium exists in the first place to express plot.

Seriously. Plot is basically the events that happen within a story, both off screen and onscreen. For him to seriously suggest that plot in generally doesn't matter, or is completely worthless shows how big of a joke he is.

The first Fullmetal Alchemist handled character tension a lot better than Brotherhood. I also never saw the reasoning for the hate regarding the ending. It's a bit of an arse-pull, but at least it didn't devolve into the Dragon Ball/Instrumentality antics of the last fights in Brotherhood.

Agreed. The plot was dumb and pointless, the characters were obnoxious and unappealing, and the horrible New York accents were annoying as shit.

@AdrianWerner: Summer Wars has what may be the best overall dub I've ever seen. As mentioned above, the Welcome to the NHK has some truly outstanding performances.

Both are fortunatelly on my to buy list, so I will give their dubs a chance.


That said, I loved Baccano One of best animes of recent years. To me it's kind of what Gurren Lagan would be like if it was made by people with actual talent.

Frontier is not very good. Plus is the best one imo, and worth watching. If nothing else it is has some incredible animation.

I cannot stand any anime series that has "kawaii" or quirky cute anime expressions in them, especially loathe series. I can only watch (when I do rarely watch series) anime series that deals with darker themes (Berserk and Kaiji).

This is mainly only referring to the newer stuff, the old old stuff like Dragonball or Pokemon I am fine with. I also hate the cute and clean look of any contemporary anime. I tend to ignore those.

I can only really watch anime movies otherwise, Studio Ghibli stuff mainly or Satoshi Kon, because they tend to deal with more mature themes or at least explore themes in a much more subtle yet sophisticated way. I also very much prefer the overall aesthetics of anime films, things are not as stylized in a crazy 'kawaii' way which absolutely turns me off as a viewer. Please no crazy huge eyes... actually just search "kawaii anime" on Google images and everything that looks like that I tend to avoid.

I really do not like how anime is evolving, love the old school style even though it is less clean (Fist of the North Star, etc.). I am talking mainly the aesthetics here.

Campy shows tend to be aware of themselves. Can't say I ever got that feeling from Frontier. They were knee-deep in the themes and narrative of that show and the fandom was more or less just arguing about which of the two girls they wanted to marry.

These type of things are always going to be wonky because Americans and Japanese classify genres very differently. Honestly, any anime that is mostly based in real life gets the label Slice of Life thrown at it.

I would so the fact that it has an over reliance on Jpop bullshit proves that it dosent take itself too seriously. Epspically the movies where they pile it on. Then you have characters that are played up for laughs like the gay ship pilot, Klan or whatever the giant zentradai girl's name was, and even Alto's girlyness. There are also pretty non serious monuments like the entire episode that is Macross Zero, Rukia's music fixing unrest with those Zentradais, or where like everyone joined Sheyl's band. I think it's pretty obvious that even F has a sense of humor and campiness to it self. So I don't think I'm wrong here either. Not that I care as I think Macross F is a pretty terrible show either way.

In the comics, it alluded that the original Lupin became senile from two world wars and Lupin III's fortune came from killing his own family and possessing their fortune. His relatives had it coming and that's why I love Lupin III.

I want to see moeblob characters to have boyfriends; cause dammit I grew up seeing boy/girl anime pairings and not forever alone cute girls.

Ranma 1/2 is still must see anime and so is Love Hina despite not being faithful to the manga.

Lucky Star episodes 1-4 is Charlie Brown early holiday special tier storytelling and humor. I sensed a strong Peanuts vibe with the plot and some of the music.

BL elements in mainstream anime is not too distracting for a heterosexual male; it gets the ladies into the shows.

Gensomaden Saiyuki is straight up shone despite fujoshi following.

Picture quality of digital anime in HD>Cell Animated TV shows.

Fist of the North Star movie by Toei Douga is damn entertaining despite not following the comics; it was one helluva cartoon fight card.

But yes, the plotline does exist fairly early on, and it's not to say that NOTHING happens at all, but there's no real inertia to the plot until things suddenly ramp up as the movie goes into its climax. It's like the film is about 60 minutes of meandering and vaguely expository first act then abruptly 20 minutes of third act with no second act to speak of at all.

Have you seen any animated Lupin? His characterization in Cagliostro is pretty much the same as it is in the TV series. I'd say that Cagliostro is arguably the greatest animated version of Lupin.

Castle of Cagliostro is a great movie, but this honestly always did kind of bother me. It's basically a Lupin movie in name only. Other than the classic chase scene near the start of the movie, there isn't really a lot about it that feels all that much like Lupin, particularly because the other members of the group are completely marginalized for the vast majority of the film.

That said, again, it is a great great movie.

Have you seen any animated Lupin? His characterization in Cagliostro is pretty much the same as it is in the TV series. I'd say that Cagliostro is arguably the greatest animated version of Lupin.

Well I only seen a good bit of Season 2, is he still the hard ass bang all women, kill those who stand in his way type in Cagligristo? Also does Fujiko get into a cat fight with the other female lead? I too nervous if Miyazaki toned it down since he barely does pure male lead based work. I know that Season 1 was bad ass like the comics but I need to wait when Discotek releases the Season 1 DVDs.
