[Anime] Your "Controversial" Opinions

Anime, or manga? The first season of the anime has some truly awful filler episodes and cringe-inducing "comedy". The manga still has some dorky silliness, but overall isn't nearly as bad. Also it has an entire third arc that ended up being relegated (in chopped and abbreviated form) to the OVAs.

Kind of both, but I was thinking of the anime more seeing as this is the controversial anime opinions thread.

The manga doesn't have some of the worst filler stuff, but it still feels rather aimless for the first 7 or 8 volumes, and has a lot of moments that fall flat later on. I think Shishio is an amazing character, but the overall series is just good. It's not bad, but it also isn't really anything particularly special in my mind.

Naruto is the best thing ever. I love most of the characters. Can't get enough of it; I have all the games and movies. I enjoy every episode including the fillers. The themes of friendship and never giving up are amazing.

Brains Base has made some great shows, but they don't have a consistently strong production quality (see Akikan, Spice and Wolf II). 2011 was a particularly awkward year for them, since they overextended themselves with a relatively large number of projects and so caused production problems to crop up in all their shows, most notably Natsume Season 3 and Mawaru Penguin Drum. So they're not the best.
Techically? Maybe. But I'm talking about the quality of the shows themselves (as opossed to just their animation) and in this area no studio can compare to BB's output in the last few years, no matter if we just talk about number of great shows, their consistency as well as pure variety of the works they manage to pull off.

Uhhh... contribute? Uhh... hm. RahXephon > Evangelion. But I wuv Evas so much... I could watch them fight ALLLL day.

GITS2:Innocence is a pretentious piece of tripe.

Macross Plus OVAs embody everything I love about animation, storytelling, voice acting, soundtracks... bit of a nostalgia bomb thrown in. I could handle the "movie" version if it were in english- I can't stand Isamu's japanese voice actor.

Wait, what's with the love for the original FMA anime? I thought it was widely accepted that it was crap aside from the music?

No, it should be widely accepted that it's awesome. I haven't seen all of Brotherhood or read all of the manga, so I can't do a full comparison, but I think the first show is just awesome in its own right, regardless of what else has been done with the franchise.

Yu-Gi-Oh! "card games on motorcycles" 5Ds is the best one of the series and the original(the first that aired in the US) sucked pretty hard in comparison to all the others.

I doubt it can be controversial when 5 people on gaf have probably seen all of them.

I'll admit the manga is fairly uneven, but even when the plot is misstepping the characters are consistently great. Kenshin is one of the best and most complex heroic protagonists ever, Saito is an awesome antihero and foil to Kenshin, and Kaoru undergoes a degree of development and maturation over the course of the series that puts all other shonen characters (let alone heroines) to shame (FMA1, in which Edward matures colossally between the first episode and the end of the movie, is exempted from this).

Nah. People hate the ending segment and movie, but untill it followed the manga it was awesome. Heck, while I enjoy Brotherhood, it's 10 or so first episodes were pure garbage compared to how originakl handled those stories.

Ignoring the subplot involving the teacher in the gun-training episode of Monster, which was great, I also liked that episode because it was a subversion of the norm in fiction, where people just magically become trained marksmen by picking up a gun.

I appreciated the level of detail in Monster, but not so much when it got in the way of telling an engaging and well-paced story. Of course my biggest problem apart from the pacing was the reliance on overwrought melodrama.

Apparently this is controversial:

I didn't hate Howl's Moving Castle.

There, I said it.

A bad Miyazaki movie is still a pretty good movie.

The only one I was actually disappointed in was Ponyo.

Also...I didn't really enjoy Code Geass. Pizza hut ruined the revolution for me.

Oh and all FMP outside of Fumoffu is mid-tier at best. Mid-tier mech design. Mid-tier story. The only good thing it serves to do is set up the hilarity that is fumoffu.

Wasn't FMP that anime about a military dude who has to protect (with his giant mech of course, and his ninja skills) this feisty high school girl from bad guys and his boss was a 12 yo or something?

If you think that setting is better than the world FMA builds up then you have objectively shit taste. No two ways about it.

Melodrama isn't inherently bad. For instance, the Death Note anime is superior to the manga due to its highly exaggerated melodramatics.

Its a lot better than you described especially when simplified like that.

That's pretty much the story in a nut shell. It just gets worse if you add in little details like her brain holding military secrets that international criminal organizations want to steal.

I agree with the second portion.

Fumoffu is so good though.

FMP itself is a push, but if you include FMP:
Fumoffu in the canon then it completely obliterates FMA.

I completely agree with this, I just really didn't like the way Monster did melodrama. It was grating and eyerolling rather than sweeping and satisfyingly over-the-top. The edgy art and mostly-realistic setting certainly didn't help make it feel appropriate, but the soap opera-esque scenarios and aversion to subtlety bordered on outright camp (Tenma's absurdly shallow, bitchy ex was hilarious, for example, yet the show tried to wring her for serious drama).

@Mortialus: MMMMM, YES, MORE

-Fractale saved anime
-Elfen Lied is a misunderstood masterpiece
-Death Note is an intelligent meditation on morality and corruption
May I ask why you found it horrible?
It's been a long time, but the characters were incredibly annoying. Especially the flower girl. And it descends into fucking stupid melodrama.
:') (happy tears!)
I haven't seen Eva recently enough to judge, so as long as you don't have an Asuka body pillow, I'll live with it. I'd have to learn to love David Lynch movies other than Dune, though...
Unfortunately, I don't own any body pillows.
As for Lynch, you actually like Dune. That's enough for me.

(If by earlly Oshii you mean 1984-ish through 2004, yes. I'd like to believe he's still got it, live-action & shitting-up-his-own-classics notwithstanding. Believe!)
Yeah, I didn't so much mean 'early Oshii' as 'everything but recent Oshii'.

Death Note is the best series of all time and nothing comes even CLOSE to it!

Yu-Gi-Oh! "card games on motorcycles" 5Ds is the best one of the series and the original(the first that aired in the US) sucked pretty hard in comparison to all the others.

I feel like people get the wrong impression about Monster due to the art style. It's not aiming for realism, it's aiming for melodramatic suspense.

Also, Eva is a great character.

The homunculi in the original FMA were much better and more interesting villains than in FMA:B. In Brotherhood, all of the homunculi aside from Wrath and
Greedling
were jokes and completely nonthreatening, though much of that might be a result of FMA:B's inability to have a genuinely dramatic moment without ruining it. Even Pride, who had a lot of build up, didn't really seem that strong compared to other characters. In the original series, whenever someone tried to pick a fight with a homunculi, you know how much the odds are stacked against them, even the more powerful alchemist characters. In Brotherhood, a fight against a homunculus usually involves the homunculus getting killed repeatedly until it dies or flees. I honestly have a hard time believing the brotherhood homunculi could have progressed their plans as far as they did without an uprising of alchemists stomping their asses into the ground. The homunculi from the original series were much more convincing in that regard.

Elfen Lied isn't a masterpiece. But it was extremely entertaining and at least made the viewer think. It also has Nyuu and anything with Nyuu in it is fuckawesome by default. This is not up for debate.

Yeah Wolf's Rain is definitely heavy on the melodrama. That's actually my main complaint, that the dialog is overly verbose. Other than that though it's a really well made show (recap episodes notwithstanding) that has a very unique world, characters with actual goals and who go through real characterization and have palpable personalities. The art and music were amazing and the ending was one of my favorites ever.

I don't think Nyuu is at all something cool. She's a bimbo anime girl character who just feels creepy. It's like OH PROTECT THIS CUTE STUPID GIRL who also is a psycho murder. I don't find female characters like that to be good. I find them creepy and pandering.

No, give me the Major from SAC, Misato from Eva, or just any female character that doesn't make me feel creepy.

Wolf's Rain is by far one of the greatest shows of the last decades really. The art quality is probably one of the, if not the finest of all modern anime too. Its lush, beautiful, and detailed. Every frame is wonderfully drawn really.

Yeah I would say its one of the best shows made in the last decade too if only for the fact that not a whole lot of anime accomplish the things that Wolf's Rain did right.

Except for those recap episodes. What were they thinking? I'm currently in the process of rewatching, and those really threw me.
