I know Valve has some deal with Epic in relation to the Unreal Development Kit and Steam, likely Valve just Licensed the announcer. I mean, Epic is all about Licensing, its how they make the bulk of their cash.

Language barriers should not be a reason to report someone, regardless of whether they were dumb enough to go to servers where almost no one spoke their language.

Fair enough, although I have seen some Russians before say a word or two in broken English that would be worthy of going under "Text abuse".

I thought about reporting for feeding, but it wasn't really intentional feeding, more like just playing poorly and not working with the rest of the team. Might as well be the same, but one is just trolling and the other isn't.

I would hope people would be speaking a language I know. In Dota you need to communicate with your team and language barriers prevent that. What's worse is I am on the US servers and end up with Russians frequently. Also, excuse my ignorance, but what is the difference between Cyrillic and Russian?

No, the European Servers are for Western Europe still, Valve hasn't set up any Eastern European Servers, nor South American or Australasian. They have about 3 regions in Asia though.

There are several languages written in a Cyrillic alphabet, and Russian only one of them. There also Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Belorussian, Serbian languages, just to name few.

I agree, you need not know more words than :

- mid
- top
- bot
- b
- ss
- push
- tp

+ pinging the map or the occasional phallic drawing. That's even less than 10 words and yet you can mix and match the words to create new ones to cover any possible scenario in a pub game of dota. SS mid and mid SS works equally well so grammar is of no importance. You want to specify the amount or who is missing? No problem, you know their names and you know the numerical system.

I hear the big reason people in Eastern Europe play in the US servers is that they get a better ping. If that is the case, and with the size of Eastern Europe, giving it a region of its own would probably be for the best.

The only sane reason I heard is that they just trying to avoid Russians as much as you are.

Minor Tip, There are 5 passive Regen items that you can give to your allies and it will give them the Regeneration effect. Ring of Regeneration, Sage Mask, Ring of Health, Void Stone, and Perseverance. If you have one of those items, and the other person could better use the effect (Support Low on HP/Mana, while you are full?), hand it to them. Most likely best done if you actually know the person though, you don't want to hand your Ring of Health to a pub hero and they never hand it back.

It's QWERTY / ЙЦУКЕН. It couldn't be mapped to the equivalent because Cyrillic has more letters in it.

Cyrillic is an alphabet, Russian is a language.

Just because it's cyrillic script does not mean they are Russian. Could be Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Belarusian, etc. Even non slavic languages like mongolian can be written in cyrillic script.

If I was playing on Russian/Eastern Europe servers, then I would, but I play on North American servers.

So, instead of hitting enter, tapping ss, and then hitting enter, I now have to hit enter, use the mouse to enter ыы(I dunno if this is just used because it's where S would be on a QWE keyboard), or hit enter, hold alt, hit + and then type 042B release alt and do it again.

This isn't even considering the fact that this person may be macedonian, bulgarian, kazakhstani or any other of the numerous languages that use the cyrillic alphabet.

Note that I'm not just pissed at russians, if someone comes in speaking german or danish or swedish it's just as annoying, you can't expect anyone to know /every/ language spoken in europe, so it's easier on everyone to speak english. I doubt someone from france will know finnish. But they will know english. I doubt someone from Austria will know spanish, but they will know english. I doubt someone from russia will know greek, but guess what? They'll most likely know english.

Someone recommend me a new hero to learn!

I've got the following in my repertoire. I feel pretty confident in playing them, provided I have an appropriate team, and most importantly, I like them: Dazzle, Viper, Venomancer, Tidehunter, Lich.

I'm currently making an effort to learn these guys. I feel like I've got a pretty good grasp of how they play now, but I'm trying to really get them down: Lifestealer, Lion.

These are some guys I like but am terrible at for various reasons: Weaver, Earthshaker.

And here are a few that I've tried and... I'm pretty sure they're just Not For Me. Ever. Either because I hate them, or I suck at them. (Although I may be willing to give them another shot in the future): Sand King, Enigma, Chen, Crystal Maiden, Slardar.

Of course i could do the same, but why should the vast majority of people adapt? Most people in europe speak english. Don't know about you, but even when i have a couple of italians in my team i'll still communicate english out of respect to the others, why can't they do the same?

They could easily map in the commands like in tf2/counter strike to give warnings. So many other solutions rather than berate others for not knowing a foreign language.

No. That is why guides exist. Every beginners guide goes over the Moba slang. That's like asking "Should you not play Chess if you don't have a grasp of the rules." If you don't know the rules you are taught them, then you can play. Same with Dota.

That's a really poor analogy. Learning English or moba slang isn't part of the rules of DotA2, just something that would things a bit easier. Could also be possible that the slang we use isn't even universal, the foreigners could have created their own variants of "ss".

Valve could easily remedy this by mapping 5-6 important commands to Z or V. You choose the command, it will come up as whatever the language is set for the other players respectively.

Edit: Most people learn the rules of the game by playing. Not by studying them without using them in practice.

To me the language barrier is more about where the servers are hosted. If I'm going to play on a US server, then I expect the common language to be English, and everybody should be capable of speaking it.

If they are doing it because they need a better ping, then they should at least learn enough words to get them by. I wouldn't log into Korean servers and start expecting everyone there to understand my English.
