I'm not much of an online player, and it sounds like 3G's terrible for that anyway. Still, maybe the GPS is useful even when it's used only through Wi-Fi, and that Gust game implies there might be games that use 3G in an interesting way, and maybe THEY will do it in a form that I'd actually give a shit about like whatever MGS Portable Ops was trying to do.

They showed some cool features with Unit 13. The game is constantly updating with challenges from your friends, your friends can unlock boss battles in your game for a limited time. I think 3G will be good for online features like Burnout Paradise. Asynchronous online/community features.

And that kind of thing doesn't use a ton of data either.

Yeah, things more indirect and akin to Demon's Souls/Dark Souls messages seem perfect for 3G rather than straight up multiplayer sessions.

EDIT: Oh god portable DS-style game with constant 3G delivered messages. If it weren't for the fact AT&T is a bitter pill to swallow that'd make it the obvious choice.

It's obvious the 3G is really just a broader way of doing something similar to Street Pass on the 3DS but not relying on the limited range of Wifi. I can't imagine there would ever be games that would be designed with 3G in mind or that will split the userbase.

Still, I like the idea of features such as Unit 13, or Wipeout but the problem for me is that New Zealand is such a minuscule market among my friends that I wouldn't be surprised if I was the only one with a PSV. I only know two people personally in a city of 1.5 million that have a 3DS (6 Street Passes in 8 months and 2 are from people I know).

If 3G is going to broaden that nationwide then I am all for it, it's just a shame it's not a standard feature across all PSV.

whoa. just found out about shinobito 2. made my the developers of tenchu2, one of my favourite ps1 games. gameplay video of it looked awesome. bought.

How ironic im in NZ too :D

Also, you seem to have mistaken how the Near functionality works (i think). 3G doesn't expand the near range or anything like that.
Unlike streetpass, it sorta "fakes" it. Instead of actually connecting to the other vita; it actually connects to the sony servers and marks down your location. (based on gps- if you have 3g, or via skyhook(?) if you have wifi)

then the servers compare vitas in the locations. so if you have a vita, and theres someone 200 meters away with another vita, and both activate near, the near servers mark down their locations, then they recognise that they're actually close to each other and vola. gift shared or whatever.

Because it's faking it, it technically has unlimited range, it's only limited on the limit that sony themselves put. I think it's half a kilometer(redsungamer was saying how there was 40 vitas in a half kilometer radius around his house)? Would be neat if the servers could expand the near range for sparse areas.

But because of this; near only works when you're connected to the internet (to mark down your location, and ping the servers). Thus: the 3G model becomes somewhat essential for a great near experience.

Just placed my pre-order tonight. Going with the new 3G bundle. Really excited about the launch lineup, one of the better software lineups we've seen in quite a long time. Certainly the best Sony launch lineup probably ever.

Question, is the Playstation Network transparent across platforms?

In other words, if I'm on my PS3...do I see what my friends are playing on their Vitas? And vice versa, if I'm on my Vita, do I see what my friends are playing on the PS3?

I think you're talking about Near. Near is pretty much a Street Pass equivalent. The benefit of 3G is that games are always connected to the community server. It's nothing you can't do over wifi, and so many places (even transportation) provide wifi.

But games like LittleBigPlanet will benefit from a constant connection to the community. Sony hasn't confirmed that you'll be able to download levels, but considering they're under 1MB you'll probably be able to.

And of course, there's a constant connection to PSN too. So you can always check your friend's trophies and send messages from anywhere.

Not yet on PS3, but you can from Vita. I've messaged guys from my friends list with no problem. You can even compare trophies.

So, Netflix isnt available in France. Does this mean that if I want to download the Netflix app to my French psn, I'll have to reset and all that just to get it off the American store ?! Or will the apps be on all the stores ?

Nooooo ! That really sucks.. I'll just have to deal with it then, because I needs my Netflix. thanks.. I have to figure out this backup stuff.

wow prepare to get smacked, Little Deviants is like the worst Vita game.
What? For a 1/3 of the MSRP price of a "normal" game, at least in Japan I find it to be a quite enjoyable minigame pack.
Are the load times horrible in the final game too or just the demo?
Yes, they are. Restarts are much faster than the first load, but still on the long side.

Well, load times aren't really a dealbreaker on handhelds. Since you can just put it down and do somewhting while loading.

I always thought of it as the opposite. Usually when I have time to play my consoles I'm at home and have all the time in the world to wait for load times. With a handheld if i want to quickly get a play in during commute or while i'm waiting for class to start or something a long load time can really be a hassle. Though really it sucks on both compared to just having short load times.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE multitasking on this device. Only downside is the browser not being accessible with a game open. PATCH IT, SONY.

so what is the smart set to get? i mainly just want the vita for games (lumines and hsg to start)

so...wifi bundle + 8gb card + games?

If you're getting the 8gb card anyways, I'd say just go for the 3G launch bundle since it's just an extra $20 when compared to buying the wifi model + 8gb card and you get 3G just in case.

Unless by wifi bundle you mean you're in Canada, then nevermind.

do you need the 8 gb card? i was just getting it b/c you need it right? i guess there is the issue of psn games though, hadn't even thought about that actually.... what is everyone getting for the most part? the 32 just seems a bit expensive for a system that honestly will probably only be a hot shots and lumines machine for the first year, but then again i don't want to have to buy another memory card later.

You'll need it for certain games to play/save. And there's always the possibility of wanting to download PSN only games as well as PSP games. But I think if you don't want to spend $100 on the 32gb card, the 3G bundle with the 8 gb card included should last you a while. The largest Vita game (Uncharted) is 2.7gb. Use that for a measure of how much space you might need.

I'm hoping the 4gb card in the First Edition bundle will be sufficient until Sony realizes they can't charge that much for flash memory. If I do get a larger card it will be the biggest I can get though. The games aren't exactly small.

I think Astro is doing retail for games so 8gb is fine for saves and such.
Uncharted isn't the biggest DD game though btw. Did we ever find out Stardusts download size?

I think he's saying don't quit the game after you're done. The game will stick around even if you turn off the hardware, or swipe to another title. So starting a new race, or resume from where you left off should be quick. On PS360, we usually turn off the hardware after a session.

Well the thing is games like Stardust won't be available for retail so you have to account for space with the PSN only games. Since it's the first year I'd imagine 8gb is plenty. But down the line you probably will want a bigger card.

thanks for the advice.

yeah i'm doing retail mostly though i do like buying stuff from psn. with this info above will probably go with the first edition and also hold out hope that prices drop at some point. worst case if find a big need for memory i'll just suck it up and buy the 32gb rather than half-assing it

excited for lumines and hsg. two of my favorite series of all time. hope they are good

I'm getting the 32Gb because I will probably try a bunch of crap, or preload demoes + DLCs before a trip. I will also take some music and family media with me.

I know for me games like Lumines and HSG are the type of games that I'd want on my system at all times which would sadly make me want to buy it digitally so that I don't have to go through the seemingly annoying process of changing game cards. If the choice was a bigger card or getting games though, always go for the games.
