The Punk Thread

How much are we gonna bend the definition of punk in here? I'd say all the ska fusion stuff that the first chunk of this thread is made up of would probably make it okay to talk about blackened/crust/grind stuff if it seems to fit more here than in the metal thread. Let them have more room to talk about Blind Guardian or whatever, so we can get this thread active!

I've been listening to http://soundcloud.com/theavclub/alaric-your-god today after reading about them in the latest Loud column on AVClub. Pretty solid deathrock/post-punk/not sure exactly what to call it. The half-shout vocals are kind of grating at times, but the songs are there. Great stuff. I'm probably going to order the record.

If you're a fan of Joy Division, early Christian Death, or any of the bands on the more bleak end of post-punk, you'll probably be into this.
I don't know why it wouldn't be ok to talk about crust punk, crustcore, blackened crust, powerviolence etc. Not sure about grindcore since it would fit in both the punk thread and the metal thread. I suspect it might go down better in the metal thread though.

That track was nice. Vocals seemed a bit out of place at times.

i like pop-punk. or punk-pop, i dunno what its called.

went and saw Yellowcard, All Time Low, and New Found Glory last week. all had really good opening acts too, venues of about 1000 people tops, live concerts are the best

My favorite Punk album ever. Sooo good.

Aw yeah, dats da bidnis son.

Seriously, I love the Clash. Their library is also great for any starting bass guitar player, easy, but still really fun.

Anyone heard of The King Blues? I went to see them at the Manchester Academy last night. They were brilliant. I've liked them for a couple of years but always somehow missed their concerts. After watching their videos on Youtube I knew it would be a great show but they really impressed. They have so much energy and presence. The crowd were brilliant too

Hang The Landlord - https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150345974486423&saved

Save The World, Get The Girl - https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150345647161423

This should work. If it doesn't then let me know and I'll try something else

So a couple of years ago, three of the best English bands, ONSIND, Calvinball and Apologies, I Have None, went on tour together. During this tour they decided that they should make a split where each band covers a song from the other two bands.

It has been finished, and it is awesome.

If you like it, please buy it, they're all super-cool guys and deserve the money. In fact, if you're in London on Wednesday, they're doing a release show which I would advise you to go to. 'cause they're all really great live.

Absolute Bastards were one of the earlier swedish blackened crust bands and they were great. Any fans here?
They sound like Skitsystem with a more black metal sounding vocalist on most of their releases. "Testimony With Emissious Laconic Vast Emotions" has a bit of Neurosis thing going on and "Twelve morons and a liar" is a bit more grindy but otherwise they basically sound like a less political Skitsystem with some Black Metal vocals.
Land of No Return
Eat Me Raw

I just found out about Fifteen Dead and they are quite good. They sound like Tragedy mixed with Gorgoroth.
You can buy their latest ep for ₤3 or get their first ep free on their bandcamp page.

So I'm watching some live Bad Religion and Face to Face videos on youtube and I got to thinking... How many calories do you think a drummer burns in a night?

Whatever it is, the drummer for Bad Religion probably burns double since their shows are like three (awesome) hours

Happy New Year everyone!

So what are your most anticipated releases and/or concerts?

I see Goldfinger is planning on releasing a new album, but I haven't really liked them since their self titled album. To be fair, I've enjoyed some of their other singles.

I see NOFX is planning on releasing a new album this year. No announcement yet on the official date. They're hit or miss, but 'Thank God it's Monday' has been one of my favorite songs for a long time for some reason. It cracks me up.

Pulley is entering the studio in Jan to record a new album... FUCK YES!!!

As for concerts, I'm not really seeing any band that I care about coming here to Denver anytime soon. I'll just continue to hang out at 3 Kings and hopefully discover some great local bands. That or the Hi-Dive (much smaller venue btw)

Hello Destiny is Goldfinger's best album since Stomping Ground. Total return to form after awful Open your Eyes and SF.

Been listening to them since 7th grade.

I usually find out about new releases after or just before they come out so there's not a lot on my radar currently. Martyrdöd should have a new album out next year and Skitsystem just signed to Southern Lord and should have a new album out next year.

Gonna pimp out my buddies bands.

I'll start with Flaccid from Calgary Alberta. They've been playing quite a few shows lately and they all vary in quality due to drunkenness but it's always a good time.

They have a tape, but it's sold out. They are putting it online in the next few days, I'll throw it up here when it's out.

They made Flaccid because their other band SKIN COLOR has a drummer who constantly tours with another band called UNFUN.

Here is some SKIN COLOR I recorded last summer:

Here is some UNFUN info:

Stenchcore from Halifax. These guys played my house in 08 and just recently last year. I didn't get to film those shows cause I shit the bed! But, I did film them during Distort Festival in Vancouver in 2010.

Listen to the song Pawns of their LP:

And watch them live here:

UNLEARN is a noisy d-beat band from Vancouver. They don't exist anymore but the members created other bands such as TOTAL WAR.

total+war+cover+copy.jpg

Watch some Unlearn I filmed in Calgary. They played 2 shows. They are both in the Video:

All of these records are released online by the bands or by the approval of the bands. If you have troubles finding links to them, I'll post them. I'm not sure how anal neoGaf is about that shit. A lot of the punk rock community promotes downloads. So I'll wait it out if you have troubles.

Actually, one place to find great tapes including bands mentioned in this post is terminalescape.blogspot.com/. Guy who runs it is in a band called NO STATIK (listen to that shit!!) and he grabs tapes from these bands with the intention of uploading and sharing which all the bands agree too. So, have fun.

I'm going to post more - with videos n' shit in a bit.

London - Apologies, I Have None

Everyone should get this album, Apologies are fucking amazing, and are all super cool guys. And they're fucking amazing.

Unfun played at one of the houses around here I think. Forgot which one.

Sweet, they are buddies. When we toured the States we picked them up in Gainsville, FL cause they were playing this shit festival called 'the fest', but anyways there van got fucked so the drummer had to run and get it fixed while we played a few of there shows in tennessee. It was a good time.

Just found out TOTAL WAR is playing Chaos in Tejas and I think are substituting for MASSGRAVE? Drummer of Massgrave plays in TW. This is cool because I didn't know if I was gonna go this year but having a good friend from the opposite side of the country meet up in Texas is usually a really good time.

Tis good to hear pulley are working on another album.

Something i hope happens this year is that Belvedere come to the UK with their reunion tour. If they bring A Wilhelm Scream over with them, it couldn't get much better than that.

Ever play in NJ? That's where I am. Once I get my band started (which has had a series of false starts going back to 2007 or so) I hope to tour as much as I can. There's so many bands out there I haven't even been able to see yet, because they usually skip over us.

I hope calling Fest shit was a joke

I want to go so badly :(

I know the guys in Belvedere and even I have to admit that watching them now would only get me stoked for nostalgia reasons. Maybe I'm just grown out of it? It would have been sweet 3 years ago.

Never in NJ, our tour got cut short cause our drummer decided to quit. It's all good. I haven't started a band in awhile and I don't think I will for some time. I was supposed to move to Vancouver into the ALF house which is known for pumping out bands (including the ones I've mentioned), and that was the goal for moving there... but I just decided to move to TORONTO for no apparent reason. It's starting to hurt. I'm not too tight with anyone here. But it's only been a month.

But yeah, tour if you have a chance. Never forget to play Canada. The shows are nuts!

Well, there are so many bad bands and really horrible 'pop' punk bands and shitty dudes. I had a fun time though... went skinny dipping with UNFUN and got kicked out of the hotel and then went to a party and tried to make out with the hottest tranny ever.

I don't like most of the people in my area either. They don't really care about music or anything except drugs, which is why there haven't been any new bands in forever. There's also the pop punk scene which I don't care for at all. Well that and I'm a very strange, awkward guy, even for a punk.

I'm supposed to head up to Montreal with some buddies during Spring Break. What are the shows like there?

I feel like some of my favourite bands are gonna be involved in that :(

The drugs can get outta control. A large reason why I moved from Calgary and opted from Vancouver. It was just killing me.

Montreal seems to have a cool scene. I've only been to one show at a venue called DeathChurch or I think Deathhouse. It's a warehouse and its pretty sweet. I watched NOMOS from NY and the show killed. People were nice and they raged.

I've been listening to a band called Truncheons from there and it's pretty legit. I guess they played Distort Fest last year but I missed them.

It's all good! More power to you. If you like it, go for it. The weather is great and its an active fest. A lot of walking and seeing cool venues etc. It's just not my cup of tea. I'd rather go and spend money on some raging fests. That's all.

Nice post.

Fuck yeah Disclose.

I've been listening to these guys

Threatener
Sick/Tired
Hatred Surge

I've heard of NOMOS, but never seen them. The best band from NYC that I've seen is Crazy Spirit. It was like psychedelic sludge punk. Reminded me of Fang. Now I can't even wait to get to Montreal.

Alright punkgaf, help me out :) I'm looking for some bands sort of like Sore Throat or Unholy Grave? Any suggestions?

Bummed about the chick leaving the band. I saw them in Texas last year and it just didn't feel right. It's still rad but deconstruct was an album I dug for awhile.

The dual male/female vocals sound cool. Really a shame that she left.

Do you know of any good female fronted or dual male/female pissed off HC/crust/whatever bands?
Something along the lines of Hatred Surge or Ruidosa Inmundicia.

Crazy Spirit is fucking AWESOME. Have you heard of there other project Dawn of Humans. FUCKING SWEET as well. Both playing Chaos as well.

If you dig Annihilation Time, you may like RATFACE (members of AT). Just pure fucking RAW punk rock. One of my favorite bands.

I mentioned NO STATIK earlier. Searched on Youtube and found this.

I was at that show. COOL! They toured with Martyrdod on the West Coast.
But seriously get 'We all die in the end' 12". I think they offer it for free online somewhere - as they run that tape blogspot.

Fuck it, here it is. http://landscapeofdust.blogspot.com/2011/04/no-statik-we-all-die-in-end-2011.html

Fair enough. And as much as I'd love to, I have nowhere near enough money for it, being a Uni student living in England. I hopefully will at some point though, just...money.

Same, maybe we can bring this thread back. I don't have a computer though, but anytime I get a chance I'll post some shit. I wouldn't mind the grind and powerviolence and sludge and doom. Maybe all things metal and punk?

Underground shit doesn't get promoted here well. And a lot of people have misconceptions of what punk really is. But maybe that's good? I kind of like the slight elitism :p. Meaning, at least I get to enjoy this shit.

Hardcore. I discovered it 1982 when I was 13. Made me what I am today.

From my point of view it died circa 1986. At least, the incarnation I felt a part of. Maybe "died" isn't the right word. It went into a coma, and a little while later reawakened in the form of Pussy Galore, the Laughing Hyenas, Halo of Flies, the Melvins, Helmet, Godflesh, the Cows, the Didjits, blah blah fucking blah. Then it died again and it stayed dead.

I dig that idea. I'd make a thread now, but I'm still a junior.

If every spoiled rich kid was listening to this stuff, it probably wouldn't feel as special anymore. So you do have a point. XD It's still annoying to see some people completely miss the point, but it's all good. More for me. :P

Hellnation
Assück
Phobia
Enemy Soil
O.L.D (first album only, rest are good but not grindcore)

I find it strange we have a punk thread, yet there is no mention of 'The Clash'.

The OP says it can't really be defined, and to a degree that is true, but I would say the first album The Clash made is also the most Punk album they did.
