Diablo 3 Beta [Beta withdrawal underway!]

I found that setting the physics from High to Low got rid of the stuttering problem almost completely, it's barely noticeable now.

On at 560 ti, I imagine it must be a problem with the physx implementation because so many nvidia users are experiencing it

I played maybe 30 minutes last night. It does not feel like a Diablo game at all. When you level up stat points are automatically awarded.....what? The skill "tree" seems like it will be fun. The graphics, while not the art style I would like, would be fine if they upped the texture resolution. Everything in the game looks soft and blurry. There's no detail. It's like a water painting. I started out as a wizard and the character models are just bad. Again, there just isn't any detail on these guys. His model looks like a potato with two cylinders for arms and two for legs.

I realize the difficulty is on very easy and maybe this is why it's not that fun? You run into a bunch of guys, spam the left click, who cares if you get hit, a multitude of health potions drop out of nowhere! I never even had to use my real health potions. I hope there is a way to turn off the "dropped" potions. It doesn't seem to add anything other than to let you coast through the game. Also what's with the UI? The map and objectives all over the screen it looks bad. I hope you can remove everything from the hud except the bottom. And you have these ugly arrows on the left where you can scroll past text? Who cares?

I will keep playing and I pray that it gets better. I remember the Diablo 2 beta grabbed me immediately and I was having a blast. This just seems like some strange action game, but not Diablo. I have the D3 collector's edition preordered and I never thought I'd say this but I'm having my doubts as to whether or not Diablo 3 will be a good game.

Eh, the game clicked for me and feels very much like Diablo. However, I do agree with you on the part I bolded above. Like you I also feel the game looks a bit blurry and washed out. I'm not saying it detracted from the fun of playing it, or even that it looked bad, but the graphic style is the one thing that did manage to break me out of that "Diablo feeling". I would have rather they kept the graphical feel closer to Diablo II personally. Maybe other acts will be better.

That said, it won't stop me from buying it on Day One.

Yay! I'm in! I can't wait to go home and play tonight! I will be in this thread often from now on. I'm so glad I got a new rig!!!

There is no physx implementation in D3, physics are completely done on CPU.

Just played for a bit, love it! Game runs silky smooth 60fps for me. Playing a Demon Hunter for now, probably try the others as well eventually.

Really? I was getting the stuttering too and wasn't sure what was causing it. I'll definitely try this tonight.

oh, I only thought that because someone who had the same problem mentioned turning off some kind of physx setting got rid of the stuttering

Anyways, finished the beta. Monk is a blast to play using the dash spell + aoe, so good.

100k invites sounds like it might be a stress test. Hopefully they give the same love to us in the EU in the near future. Have fun guys!

Are there any ways to curb the issue of traffic shaping? My college thinks they're doing us all a huge favor by shaping any and all traffic that resembles P2P sharing, and the beta is unplayable to me.

And no, I'm not willing to pay for a solution. That's ridiculous.

Welp, this ended up being a disappointment. I really feel like I just played a World of WarCraft mod called Diablo 3. Since D2, I've played so many other action-RPGs that this one is just a bummer imo.

Explain yourself.

Well, I've already played WoW and I didn't want an action version of that. That's what Diablo 3 is. I've already ran through the beta. I had a friend watch me on Xfire. He kind felt the same way. But I'll just bullet some things I hate:

-Linear, linear, and very linear.
-Quest feel like WoW Lite.
-Graphics are okay just muddy and blurry (could just be beta)
-Health orbs make the game extra cheesy and easy.
-Basically, for an action-RPG, this has the most minimum RPG I've ever seen in a game. It's almost like they copied Chris Taylor's Space Siege for the RPG mode.
-The HUD is horrible. I don't want stuff floating around everything. If I need a map, I'll hit Tab and bring up the overlay map D1 & D2 brought.
-It feels really dumbed down, as in, it's not meant for fans but everyone.

Anyone that can say this feels like a Diablo game must just be extremely easy to satisfy, a fanboy of the namesake, or just really trying too hard to like it.

Out of curiosity, did you play Diablo 1 or 2?

-Diablo 1 & 2 were extremely linear, I don't understand that argument at all.
-Every game does the "!" and "?" now, that's about the only similarities with WoW's quest system.
-Subjective
-It's incredibly easy because it's the first 13 levels of the game
-First 13 levels of the game
-Subjective
-Also, first 13 levels of the game. This doesn't include runes, or passive abilities, high level gear, or anything.

As someone who played thousands of hours of both Diablo 2 and world of warcraft, and has played the beta for a decent amount, my thoughts.

Diablo 3 shares similarities to Wow for sure, but in my opinion it is for the better. Blizzard learned a lot about game design from WOW, and to disregard seven years of learned lessons to cater to old jaded Diablo fans or wow haters is probably the dumbest thing they could do. I'm glad Diablo 3 is Diablo 3 and not Diablo 2.5 and doesn't inherit ten year old game design and methodology.

Playing the beta has rendered Diablo 2 virtually unplayable for me. The thousand little annoying things with D2 are gone and I can never go back.

Obviously I did since I stated that... I'm just not a fanboy of companies. This game is Diablo by name only.

Yeah, I'm not trying hard to like it, I like it because I have fun playing it even though it's a short piece of the first act. It's not just Diablo in name only but you seem to have already set your mind on hating it, it's just totally the different than how you make it sound.

All I have to say is... its fuckin diablo and its awesome

I'm just stating my opinion. I know in Gaf, it's really hard for people to just accept an opinion, but that's what it is. I've been playing Diablo (and all the bazillion clones) for a long time. I just expected a leap forward, not a step back. Of course it's going to look better due to D2 coming out how long ago? They didn't do horrible on the fighting side of the game. Just everything else is idiotic to me. No longer do I need to care about stats. I just need to worry about rushing through the game and making sure I push lots of loot on the ACH so Activision can microtransaction the crap out of players.

The game isn't dumbed down because it's the first 13 levels either. It's dumbed down because this is an Activision game, not a Blizzard game.

- Diablo 1 and 2 are just as linear.
- The quests all center around finding the fallen star and are all related.
- Graphics are nothing special I agree with you.
- You can not comment about the difficulty; you have only played the first few levels of normal.
- I can't see that I have ever seen an action RPG with more stats and customization.
- I disagree with you on the HUD but that is preference.
- I don't see how it could be dumbed down when there are way more skills in this game than any other ARPG and considering that inferno mode will probably be extremely difficult.

It sounds to me like you are trying too hard to not like it.

The game isn't dumbed down because it's the first 13 levels either. It's dumbed down because this is an Activision game, not a Blizzard game.

It's dumbed down because it's normal mode. They have not opened up the other modes as far as I know.

And really... I think you give Activision too much credit in this case. I'm pretty positive Blizzard has to power to keep them off their nuts.

Otherwise, gonna spend some time with this tonight cause I have not had a chance to touch it before the changes. Just waiting for my other half to get in the beta as well so we can play together.

I don't think the game is dumbed down at all and if anything I am looking forward to seeing the other difficulties because that will change the game just like it did with Diablo 1 and 2.

Like I stated before it seems like you have a chip on your shoulder about it and wanting to hate it, maybe that's not the case but it seems like it is and there's nothing wrong with your opinion, I have mine as well.

There actually is something wrong with his opinion. He stated "Anyone that can say this feels like a Diablo game must just be extremely easy to satisfy, a fanboy of the namesake, or just really trying too hard to like it."

Simply untrue.

It's easy because it's the first third of the first act. You haven't been paying attention to the development of this game, and that's perfectly fine, but please don't say outlandish things like "HERP DERP THIS IS DUMBED DOWN CAUSE IT'S ACTIVISION." when you don't know what you're talking about.

Watch that all the way from where it starts (40 min and 41 seconds) to 46:20ish. If that doesn't show you how wrong you are, well it's obvious you just want to hate this game.

Why the hell does it lag so much?! Was fine earlier in the day, now it's a good 3 seconds behind on actions.

It's possible that it's due to all the new people in the beta, it's causing lag?

Anybody in beta know how well an i5 2400 + GTX460 would handle the graphics? Would it be better off going for a 6870?

Your last sentence is why everyone will know your opinion was biased from the start. You are obviously jaded and not coming into this with an open mind. Most people will not agree with you. Diablo 3 feels like Diablo, plain and simple.

I do agree with the map and have given feedback on that. There needs to be a way to get rid of that minimap in favor of the old map.

I have absolutely no right to feel entitled, but at this rate I think I'm never going to get in, a bit frustrating as a guy who beta tested their last three games.

I have a GTX 460 and it maxes everything at 60fps.

Lol, I love that part where he's like "everyone says Diablo II wasn't easy like this, well you're wrong (plays clip of Diablo II on normal mode)"

I feel bad for people like you who are so excited for this game and aren't getting in, when people that were jaded about this game from the start are the ones getting in. It's so not fair =/.

I didn't get in today. Maybe another wave (or different contest.)

Not sweating it too much though - I know the beta is short and limited. Even if I don't ever get in, it's just another hour or so to play fresh in what I'm sure will be many in the retail release.

Yeah I've only been able to play through it once with a friend who got in, and I've been wishing I could get in ever since :(.

I have every Blizzard game attached to by bnet account, and I even got suckered into the WoW annual pass, and I still get no beta love.

I thought for sure this last round when they send out a huge amount of invites I would be in, but still no luck. Oh well, I just hope they are getting closer to a release.

Awesome awesome, now I can't wait for it.

What have I done to anger the Blizzard gods, I've subbed to your year of WoW, I've played your games since I was kid (Rock N Roll Racing), why don't you love me? :(
