NFL Super Bowl XLVI |OT| Matchup More Unwanted Than Madonna's Halftime Show

Roger Goodell just said that the Thursday night games on NFL Network will run from Week 2 - Week 15 next season, and every team in the league will have at least one primetime game as a result.

Edit: Beaten.

Holy shit. They really want people to start hating the NFL. Leave games on Sundays.

Who will hate the NFL by it being on Thursday? The MLB, NHL, and NBA commissioners? America would devour the NFL if it were on every night and then ask for more. 10 million people watched the Pro Bowl. The PRO BOWL.

Goodell says that the league is interested in bringing the NFL back to Mexico and playing a regular season game there.

I'm not sure I understand the complaint either. The only thing I've ever disliked about TNF are the match-ups (which more often than not suck). If they provide better match-ups and subsequently better quality football, I'd be quite happy to tune in. I have the same issues with MNF.

It is on NFL network only reason why I can't stand it really.

goodell says he believes games should be played in all weather. then why did they cancel that Philadelphia game last season?!

Yeah, but at least the earlier matchups will be inherently better since we won't know yet that certain teams are dead. Agreed about many of the matchups in recent years though. I can't recall too many games I rushed home from work to watch.

If they still can't make deals with Time Warner and the other cable companies to carry NFL Network, it's a major fail for the NFL imo.

If you don't get the channel, I suppose I understand it but haven't they started streaming the games online?

The only other issue would be the production value/quality which is amateur hour in comparison to NBC on Sunday nights. I don't find it quite as bothersome though mainly because I think NFLN made the right choice in getting Mayock in the announcing booth. Good analysis makes the disaster that is their graphics and production far more palatable.

I always tend to work Thursday nights and we don't have NFL network because we have Time Warner so I can't watch Thursday games at all.

There is no way to watch any NFL Network game unless you have cable. I had the PS3 package and I couldn't get those games at all. It's not as stupid as the baseball streaming rules but the NFL really does need to look at providing for people who have been supporting them.

There are games on Sat, Mon, Sunday, Thurs.

America loves the NFL. Thur games starting at week 2 is not going to drive off any fans I think.

Maybe they will work out a system where the game is shown on local tv in the home markets who don't have the NFL network.

Only thing with NFL network is the shoddy broadcast production values to me. I love the way NBC/CBS does it. NFL network is last on the presentation ladder to me.

NFL players are soft. Back in my day...

Yeah that's what they do here in San Diego. They air the NFL Network broadcast on the local CBS station.

The local games get shown on local tv on Thursdays. Then a few years down the road a Friday game would happen and a longer schedule.

Mayock is incredibly smart, but I wish he'd measure his words. It's like he feels the need to fill every silence. I agree about the production, but I find their HD to be crystal clear and light years ahead of what I'm getting from FOX.

IIRC, that was a question of safety of the fans getting to and from the stadium. The entire city was being shut down.

They already show local teams on local networks. I understand the statement about this making people hate the NFL now though. If my team was on NFLN and I couldn't watch it, I'd be pissed. Make a damn deal with the cable companies already.

I thought it had something to do with fan safety. The field and stadium were ready to go but the roads were real bad in the area if I recall.

*Beaten!

The goal is to make sure every team gets a primetime game, so yes you are going to get crappy matchups. I don't think NFLN ever wants to take the true marque games from NBC, Fox, and CBS.

I think that putting more games on NFLN will put even more pressure on Time/Warner to make a deal.

That has been in place in Houston for every Texan game on NFLN or ESPN. I would assume it is the same everywhere.

Ahh. They do? I live in LA. The area doesn't have a local team of course. I stand corrected on that.

Did you see question in the Goodell conference about the new stadium in SF maybe leading to a new stadium in SD?

Makes it seem there might be a glimmer of hope. He also said "new california stadiums". Maybe he was rolling the new LA stadium covert styles?

I hope SD works out this stadium stuff in the near future.

Having all 32 teams in primetime will also allow for each team to experience the practice scheduling issues that come along with primetime games, so there's that from a competitive balance standpoint.

Overall, I think it's a positive move. Getting NFL games earlier in the week for pretty much the entire season? Fine with me. I don't expect the quality of the matchups to be much different from before now that we're including every NFL team in the mix, but the NFL has this rare quality for me where I can watch any game, even if my own team isn't playing.

Didn't see the conference, but saw tweets from the Chargers PR Twitter account. I would say that there's a bit more than a glimmer of hope at this point, maybe 50/50. A lot depends on what happens this year. The current mayor of San Diego is a supporter of a new stadium but his term ends this year, so he wants to leave with a good legacy. The team and city also want to come up with a financing plan soon so that the public can vote on it. So we should hopefully have a clearer picture later this year.

local markets always get their game on a broadcast station I believe.

Packers trying out 4 D-Lineman.

That's not the problem you dolts.
You could put 10 CJ Wilsons or Jarius Wynns and still get no gd rush.

So stupid.

I'm still stuck on the fact that Goddell is actually considering expanding to 34 teams.

Ughhhhh

I am really excited for more expansion. I would love to catch an Eagles game in Lodon or even LA some time, plus the more fans that get to experience the joy of having a local team the better.

He categorically denied that. All he did was say if the league ever expanded it wouldnt be to 33. It would have to be an even number.

He said they haven't considered it yet and won't in the immediate future but he doesn't want to move a team to LA and he wants to get the NFL back in LA sooooo.....

Gotta read between the lines there. Veiled threats at cities giving them a hard time with new stadiums. If I had to wager, I'd bet on a team moving there before they ever expand again. I did enjoy his assertion that fans want an 18 game season and they're currently evaluating the past season and the changes made to workouts/practices before they push forward with plans again.

Goodell did something good for a change, I've wanted more TNF and he delivered. Slotting every team in is just icing on the cake. As a fan I just want the opportunity to watch every team, good or bad, at least once. Good move.
