I don't understand why Amazon would leave behind the respectable ecosystem they've built on Android to start a new one on a rocky, unsure platform.
Because they really don't care about the underlying platform. It's not like most people look at a Kindle Fire or Nook Color/Tablet and think 'Android'. While they may have opened up the device to their Android Marketplace ... it's still targeted towards apps made specifically for the Fire just like B&N is doing. Essentially it's no more Android than their respective eInk devices. It's kind of like the original XBMC being Linux, unRAID being Linux, etc. As far as the user is concerned ... it's really its own thing.I don't understand why Amazon would leave behind the respectable ecosystem they've built on Android to start a new one on a rocky, unsure platform.
While subtle, that would imply it can run Windows 8 SW which may not be the case.
Understood. But if this doesn't really use any of the SW, it would only confuse things more. Not like Windows 8 can play all Windows 8 software either. ARM vs x86 vs x64
There seems to be a lot of shake up and moving around at Microsoft during the last few months but that is common I suppose. What do you think of the rumor of Windows Phone on Amazon?
can someone explain this to me. is arm gonna be like x64 which emulates x86 when need be? or will x64 emulate both 86 and arm. but neither arm or x86 emulate anything. or is it just a free for all.Not like Windows 8 can play all Windows 8 software either. ARM vs x86 vs x64
Apps you're using right now on your Windows 7 computer won't work on Windows 8 tablets that use Tegra, Snapdragon, OMAP, and other arm chips. The only exceptions are IE10 and Office 15.can someone explain this to me. is arm gonna be like x64 which emulates x86 when need be? or will x64 emulate both 86 and arm. but neither arm or x86 emulate anything. or is it just a free for all.
Until they settle with MSWould cost them money to license the platform. The reason they went the way they've gone with say the Fire is it's all free besides their in house stuff.

Windows 8 metro apps (the ones that are fullscreen) will work on any Windows 8 computer or tablet. That means devices using Intel or AMD chips, as well as Tegra, Snapdragon, OMAP, etc.
Windows 8 ARM: Metro apps, IE10, Office 15
Windows 8 x86/x64: Metro apps, existing legacy apps

Hopefully we'll now have a decent Kindle app, like one that actually is able to make annotations/highlights. Meh, who am I kidding
Posted yet? Found this on the Verge -- Free Zune Pass for a year with Windows Phone purchase.
Hoping for Xbox Live Gold to be bundled in the future.
I dropped my Omnia 7 (on a hard, dry floor) and the touch screen stopped working. I sent it off to be repaired and they told me they won't because it's due to water damage. It did get a bit wet in the rain about 6 months ago, but it has worked fine ever since. Could the water have left evidence without causing damage, and they've just assumed that is the cause or could the drop have somehow caused some kind of dormant damage to manifest?
If the phone is working perfectly aside from the touchscreen, how much should a fix be and who should I approach, Samsung or just a third party phone repair shop?
Alright as someone who's been a casual Twitter person I'm trying to use the platform more. Being casual meant on my phone I mainly use the built in twitter hooks in people, and have the official app for backup.
The official app sucks and always funks up on me though, and since I'm trying to use twitter more often I think it's time to go 3rd party.
What should I go with? I've heard Rowi is good? I use Tweetdeck for Chrome on my Desktop/CR-48, but I don't think there is a WP app. I know I think it was Beez or something was good, but that was waaayyy back at launch. I've also heard of Mehdoh?
Show me the light WP Twitter GAF!
PS: For bonus you can throw up your twitter handle and I'll follow you!![]()
I might attempt that if I can guarantee that is what's causing the problem. Is there nothing internally that would effect the touch screen alone? You can get a new digitizer on ebay and replace it yourself.

Awesome, thanks. I think I'll get an approximate quote from a local repair shop, and if its particularly expensive I'll give it a go myself. The controller or the connector on the mainboard could be the other reason, but the digitizer is so cheap, I'd give it a try.
Why would they bundle gold? Gold does nothing for the phone. Zune Pass actually works on the phone.
Mehdoh, tweet it! Should be getting a big update soon so it's one to watch
Matters your use-case.so my best bet would be a tablet/laptop hybrid with x64bit architecture
There's a sticker thing in the battery compartment that changes color with moisture.I dropped my Omnia 7 (on a hard, dry floor) and the touch screen stopped working. What kind of update? I'll definitely look into it! Thanks!
With the exception of Nokia, other major handset vendors will probably not commit resources to develop WP8-based smartphones, indicated the sources, adding that PC vendors such as Acer, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Dell may optimize the new platform to make a comeback in the smartphone segment.
According to Microsoft's roadmap, Mango will be upgraded to Tango in March-April 2012, to Tango 2 in mid-year, and to WP8 (codenamed Apollo) at year-end 2012, with a large volume of WP8-based smartphones to hit the market in the first half of 2013, the sources revealed.
It also seems idiotic for MS so I doubt this news. They can't be selling just Tango phones come Sept. which will basically be Mango phones spec wise with Apollo launching late in the year i.e. Q4 like say November. Not with all of the ICS phones coming and the iPhone 5 over the summer.
That blows hardcore if Tango is what we thought Tango was going to be aka making the platform ready for lower cost handsets. Waiting till late 2012 for Apollo with most W8 handsets hitting in 2013 just blows.

Rumor also seems bunk because MS doesn't do two rounds of the same update i.e. Tango 1 and Tango 2.
PS: Ugh got the keyboard glitch typing this. WTB update ASAP ATT! K Thnx Bye!

Nothing's changed and the roadmap is still the same. The wide release of Mango phones came in October and November 2011, which isn't much earlier than the "late 2012" date for Apollo. Tango's also supposed to bring smaller changes for all devices, like system wide search, folders, smaller media controls.
So, should MS release this faster? Yeah sure, I bet they'd love to release it tomorrow, including several phones from everyone, but as far as I can tell, they're still on schedule. Nothing of this comes as a surprise.
Oh hey Bret, btw, how's the flashing of you GFs Android phone going? Did you finally find a ROM that isn't crap?
so which budget phone is better? HTC Radar or Lumia 710?

unless you live outside the US. id just wait it out. windows phone become cheap as hell on plans.so which budget phone is better? HTC Radar or Lumia 710?
... basically this.Lumia 710, but if you are buying on contract there are so many cheap WP deals I'd get neither.
PS: I still think the rumor is off because when has MS done two updates under the same name? Just seems odd. I can see tango being more featured though since it's been in the works longer than expected.
Xbox Live app needs to be mango enabled with some live tile functionality.
The Tango 1 and 2 thing isn't new. It has been rumored for like 6 months, originating from Mary Jo Foley I believe. I'm fairly sure its true.
Until they settle with MS
In all seriousness, I think you're underestimating the costs and time involved with doing things in-house. It's very possible they would have preferred to pay a licensing fee for something closer to a pre-baked solution. There simply wasn't one available. They didn't actually have a choice here.
http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/6/2774657/nokia-white-lumia-800-release-dateBesides the UK, Nokia's home nation of Finland will also be among the first to receive stock of the white Lumia 800, along with Russia, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Poland. Other markets in which the Lumia 800 is already out will follow on from March onwards.
I think I need to go ly dwn.
