I wonder why.
:P

Best new series from this generation hands down.

As long as we exclude Gears of War and Uncharted and Mass Effect. :P

you never played valkyria chronicles

edit: i never played the psp spinoffs
edit 2: i want the skies team to make something for consoles again
edit 3: valkyria chronicles 2 or skies 2 would be fine

Played and beat (the original, not the PSP games).
Loved it, but NMH had so much more charm and awesome.

I thought the whole thing was a bit choppy actually, look at 1:50-1:51 in this video from IGN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnVz7p765IM

It does however open up many interesting gameplay opportunities. Even rail shooters could be revitalized with this. Though the best example I can think of is with Fatal Frame/Project Zero where you control a camera in interesting ways, not previously possible without the Wii U remote.

Yup, one of the first things I thought of when seeing the U controller was using it as a Camera Obscura. And having a Pip-Boy in the palm of your hands would also be full of Instant Win with a large topping of Awesome Sauce.

And I think it's about bloomin time that Nintendo came up with an actual name for the U controller too.

Details about Nintendo's GDC keynotes:

The first of these sessions is "Thinking in 3D: The Development of Super Mario 3D Land." The talk will detail how the development of the hit 3DS title came to be, as well as teach developers how to properly use the 3DS's 3D capabilities as well as the difference between 2D and 3D gameplay. The talk will be given by game director Koichi Hayashida on Wednesday, March 7 from 3:30 - 4:30 in Room 132, North Hall.

The other discussion Nintendo will be participating in is "Existential Crisis: Do We Really Need AI?", a panel about the importance of AI in video games. While not specifically Nintendo-centric, Steve Rabin, Principal Software Engineer for Nintendo of America, will take part of the presentation. Rabin is an AI veteran who has worked on DS, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U development tools. The panel will happen on Tuesday, March 6 from 5:05 - 5:30 in Room 2006, West Hall.

The second one sounds interesting. Hopefully Nintendo will show something new, like they have been doing in past GDC's.

Sounds like a teaser for New Super Mario World 3DS might be shown, showing the technical differences between that and 3D Land.

So, when talking about launch/launch window titles, don't forget Pokemon!

Not an MMO, but the console battle simulator that comes with each mainline RPG.
By the time Wii U comes out, it'll be around two years since BW were released, and the traditional 3rd Version (the Crystal/Emerald/Platinum equivalent) will be dropping in September this year (possibly for 3DS).

The sim is relatively over-due and although probably originally developed for the Wii, it's almost certainly switched over to the Wii U.

Who knows, maybe it'll even incorporate some of that NFC stuff into its design...

I really don't know where to ask this, but this is the coolest and most active Nintendo thread here, and I don't really want to make a thread for this so bear with me, please.
Is there any way to know if my Wii Remote+ is a counterfeit model? I was pretty sure it was an original one but I have my doubts now. I bought Red Steel 2 and the speaker makes a nonstop buzz sound, even if I lower the volume completely. A bit of googling seems to indicate that it's because it isn't an original controller but I didn't find many similar cases. This is the only game where this happens, I bought this remote a month ago with Skyward Sword and WiiSports Resort. Now, the remote works well, aside for this issue on Red Steel 2 but I'll be pretty pissed if this isn't an original one as I got this from a retailer I've been buying from for a long time. The box says it comes with 2 AA batteries and it didn't come, and now that I think about it, it seems very plasticky, but maybe it's me being paranoid.
Here's a couple of pics with it and the box, can't take more right now, anything I should be looking for?

Thanks a bunch and sorry for making this post in this thread!

I'm actually most interested to see what kind of art style Nintendo can pull off with a more powerful console, considering how stellar SS's was. I'd like a stylized Metroid more than a Crysis-style Metroid, I think (Although Crysis looks amazing.)

But when it comes to gameplay, more than Zelda and Metroid I'm looking forward to an excellent "bridge" game. My buddies, my wife and I all enjoyed NSMBWii immensely. Not sure what was with all the hate. It's one of the only games I've gotten my wife to play more than a couple hours with me. That, and Wii Fit.

Think there will be another early-life strong-selling peripheral like the Balance Board?

EDIT:

Looks legit to me, but I got the one that came with SS, so I can't say for sure. You could probably contact Nintendo customer support about it.

Your "Home" button is blue instead of white, unfortunately. Looks like a fake.

EDIT: Though I know nothing about the fakes. All I'm saying is the home button is suspicious.

EDIT 2: The power button is also white instead of red.

Pokemon Snap 2!! Its made for that controller and that panoramic idea

How does Grasshopper sustain itself with so many flops like NMH and SotD? Not saying they're bad games but they hardly lit up the charts. Lollipop Chainsaw looks to be another bomba as well.

They don't set their budget phaser to "stupid".

edit: NMH sold perhaps 400000 copies. At an ASP of $30, that'd be twelve million dollars gross. Maybe they get a million of that. Is it crazy to think they might be able to make a game for substantially less than a million dollars?

Because

A) NMH wasn't a flop in the perspective of the budget.
B) They work with publishers to pay them regardless of sales landmarks. So they won't become super-rich if they get a hit, but they put food on the table.
C) Grasshopper works on a lot more projects than you would think. Fatal Frame IV, for example.

So a Metroid game is almost a sure bet for the system.

I can already see the touch tablet being used for maps
and also using it to "scan" the environment. It could
also be used as the interface/controls for Samus's ship.

I'll keep an eye on Lollipop Chainsaw, but right now it feels like something that rather should have been a special stage or two in No More Heroes 3. (Which hopefully is already in the works for WiiU, I neeeed it)

Ah, it makes sense when you put it that way. Didn't know they did contract work for games like Fatal Frame IV.

Just curious but do you guys roughly know the budget of NMH?

It is amazing that Grasshopper Manufacture is still around especially after the bad sales of Shadows of the Damned. It's a shame that Suda 51's been cursed with poor publishing partners like EA and Ubisoft.

Didn't Suda kind of confirm the development of No More Heroes 3 for Wii U already? I can remember an interview where he hinted at it.

Yeah, he kind of hinted it unofficially.
They asked him whether he was going to develop the third episode of the series on WiiU and he answered yes, of course or I'm looking forward to it, something like that.

Suda says a lot of things. Marvelous has not had much luck with the last three games and I doubt Ubisoft is eager to bankroll a new one.
But NMH should be the Grasshopper's most profitable (own) game/IP or did I miss some others? Plus it seems like he asks the PR girl in the video for permission to talk about it. Some positive signs for me. Though I could live without a NMH3, because NMH2 ended it pretty well.

Well, here's hoping good things with his work with WB Games.
More than anything, though, his problem is mainly who publishes his games in JAPAN.

Marvelous and ASCII are not exactly in a position to really promote, and they were the ones who published the vast majority of his work. The only real deviations from that were killer7 (which was promoted heavily enough to make him a celebrity in the industry in the first place) and Fatal Frame IV.

Lollipop Chainsaw has backing from Kadokawa Shoten in Japan, who, while not quite the biggest game publisher ever, are a major media conglomerate in Japan now (buying many smaller game publishers including ASCII, opening a movie studio, etc.) and have the ability to really push a game if they feel that there would be a payoff for doing so (they own enough magazines and TV spots to promote it in). So we'll see how that turns out.

Considering the total 1T-SRAM in GameCube/Wii is 27 MB (24+3), here are some (baseless) possibilities concerning the 32 MB eDRAM rumor:

- 32 MB of new eDRAM on top of 3 MB 1T-SRAM
- 24 MB eDRAM + 8 MB 1T-SRAM (would still do 1080p in a single pass)
- simply a single 32 MB 1T-SRAM chip
- hax

BTW I've been wondering, is there something stopping 1080p with 2xMSAA being done in a single pass with 32 MB eDRAM? It should just fit into 32 MB with 368 KB left (assuming I'm calculating it properly). Is more space leftover required for some sort of overhead?
I was having a similar discussion with brain_stew several months ago (yes, the gpu can, and most likely does, keep other things in there besides fb), until he reminded me there was the uPad screen to be serviced (1.5MB minimum). So yeah, there's a sufficient number of 'distractors' that would hamper 2xMSAA@1080p.

Why would you want to have 2 fbs? If there's no special coherence logic implemented in the gpu there's no need for a second fb. Simply render one after another. It is easier that way, instead of splitting the eram raise the fill rate.

That's an option. It does take an extra fb clear but given the small size of the uPad fb that should not be a problem. What might be a problem is the fact you'd have to wait for the main fb to get resolved to main ram, before you can start with the small fb. Same with the next frame in the main fb. With partitioning you don't need that.

Is the 1T-SRAM really necessary for backwards compatibility though? I'm really not into emulation at all, but Dolphin manages most games just fine in PC's without low latency memory pools. Most problems Dolphin has don't seem to have anything to do with low latency memory access either, from what I understand.

Fucking Dolphin, it has warped the minds of everyone regarding emulation.

I'm tired of reading "But Dolphin does this and Dolphin does that". Dolphin doesn't emulate anything, not accurately at least. It's just a hack on top of another hack. You can't load a game on Dolphin unless someone has made a bunch of game specific hacks that makes it play correctly.
