unaware that Netflix had their own series...?

plz explain

On February 6th, Netflix will premiere its first scripted show, “Lilyhammer,” in which Steve Van Zandt (“The Sopranos”) plays a New York mobster in witness protection in Norway. Later this year, it will release “House of Cards,” a highly anticipated adaptation of the British miniseries produced by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey. Next year, it will debut new episodes of the cultish comedy “Arrested Development,” which originally aired on Fox.

Hastings offers a comparison between Netflix and HBO: “We are becoming more like them in doing some originals, starting that journey, and they are becoming more like us in creating an on-demand interface like HBO Go,” which allows viewers to watch channels on the Web and on mobile and tabulate devices.

HBO declined to comment.

Production schedules will vary widely at the sites, but Netflix plans one notable difference: All its episodes will be released at once.

its their first show

As Netflix moves away from physical DVDs and into streaming movies and television shows, it has also ordered original programming of its own, including high-profile purchases of the David Fincher-Kevin Spacey series "House of Cards" and a new season of cult classic "Arrested Development".

i wonder what david chase thinks of this (lol)

i guess its written by norwegian people.. weird project

might be a little too analyze this

the first eipsode aired in norway last week, the second one airs tonight actually.

not a bad show, will be interesting to see what you guys think of it. Van Zandt basically reprises his Silvio Dante though, so you kinda know what to expect. Think big NY gangster finds himself in a small town and applies all his gangster knowledge to said town. The Norwegian accents are thick on purpose, pay little attention to that as most Norwegians' English is pretty good.

give it a shot, it's a real piss-take of rural Norway, but it's all in English (maybe a few words in Norwegian here and there, assume it will be subtitled) Let us know what you think :)

Oh, episodes are also available for free on www.nrk.no, our national broadcasting channel for those who live in Norway. I guess you could proxy into it, dunno.

This premieres today on Netflix. Anyone watching?

Also, BBC Acquires ‘Lilyhammer’

Richard Klein, controller of BBC Four which will air the show, said: “Lilyhammer mixes sharp wit and American big city ways with the beauty of the Norwegian mountains and folksy nature of a small town – a perfect combination for a razor-sharp drama about cultural mores. I am delighted the BBC Four has acquired this drama and I am sure our viewers are going to have a good time!”

Wasn't too impressed with the trailer, will see what the reviews/GAF say.

Assuming that you have Netflix already, you could always just try it for yourself.

And I'm a bit confused, are BBC4 and whatever that Norway station was called acquiring rights from Netflix to broadcast the show?

Not sure if any non-Norwegians would like it (I think it's mediocre), but it's setting records here. Over 1million viewers last week ( 20% of the population). I think it's relying too much on the standard rural norwegian stereotypes, but you americans may not be as fed up with them as I am

Edit: and there is no logic behind the use of languages in the series. For some reason everyone speaks Norwegian to him and not English and he understanda everything although he's just by listened to a beginner class for a few days.

Guess I'll check this out when I get home later tonight. Looks like it could be promising. Even if it sucks, at least Netflix is moving towards offering original content, which could be really great in the future.

Despite being labeled as the "first original series from Netflix", it's not actually produced by them. Lilyhammer is a Norwegian series that Netflix acquired from the Norwegian Broadcasting Company. I assume BBC also acquired rights from the NBC.

Apparently they're doing the same thing for all their original series, AD included.

Thank you, based Bob.

Thanks for the clarification.

All the news about this series seemed to imply that Netflix was producing.

Best part of this thread is finding out that Netflix will release all eps of their original series' at one time. Marathoning the new season of Arrested Development will be awesome.

The first episode was decent. Didn't really think the concept would work but it turned out to be intriguing. The language issue bothered me for a bit because he was learning basic Norwegian and then was able to understand the language after a couple days. Once I stopped dwelling too much into that is when I started to enjoy the show.

So does this not work on devices? Not showing up on my blu-ray player as an instant queue, just a did release. Is it computer only currently?

I planned on watching one episode and wounded up watching the first 4 eps straight. Love this show.

Not quite. His Norwegian was always "decent" but a lot of citizens just assumed he didn't know much, as per the
taxi driver
in the first ep and in later episodes you slowly see him start to understand the language, asking people to repeat things/ say it in english or asking them to speak in their native tongue as a sign of respect. if anything the Norwegians break off into english when they think he doesn't understand of their own accord and the show rarely makes it clear whether or not Frank is struggling to keep up or is just putting on a ruse.

While I'm the type of guy who waits until a show is done so he can watch every episode in a row...I'm not sure how I feel about them dumping an entire new series in one big push. Give us maybe 3 at a time, let us feel it out before committing to it. And make us WANT to watch it by making us wait.

Nope, netflix has spoiled me. I could barely watch broadcast Tv because I dislike waiting until the next week for a new episode.

I agree. I hope Arrested Development isn't put up all at the same time. I feel weird saying that because normally that would be ideal, but it would be a shame to wait so long for those episodes and then marathon through them in a few days.

You guys realize you don't have to marathon through them, or watch more than one a week, right?

It's a little too good-natured for my tastes. I was hoping for a more cynical, Coen-esque approach. Lilyhammer is enjoyable enough to be a distraction while you're eating or something, but I was never really fully engaged. I might stick with it, I might not.

The best part of this show is listening to Swedish people speak in English. The crescendo harmony of the language is awesome, everything sounds like a question.

I watched the first episode last night.

No complaints! I enjoyed the pokes at country life and the types of personalities you meet in rural areas. I was really pleased that Lilyhammer hasn't devolved into dark comedy, for there's more than enough of that on TV. We don't need Sopranos-in-Norway.
