Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter project by Double Fine [ended, $3.3 Million funded]

I turn away for a few minutes and they're at 122k already? wtf

these people are gonna break a million at this rate

I just backed them with $30.

Man, shit like this makes me love the Internet just that much more. I hope more respectable game companies try something like this. User funding and self publishing on Steam so they don't have to deal with big corporate bullshit.

But what will those big executives do all day? How will they justify their salaries?

Watch Valve start a kickstarter for HL3.

3,333,333 dollars raised in 33 hours. BOOOOOOOOM

$333,333 Pledge Prize:

You get to make a joke about Gabe's body. In front of him*

*While he slowly plays with his knives. Safety not guaranteed.

I don't think anyone would need to donate to projects like half life 3, this should be more for projects that aren't assured to profit otherwise. Also, relying on donations game to game would feel pretty scary, but it's a nice alternative for some projects.

So what if after the game is funded, the game comes out it and it sucks ?

Then it sucks. Myself and others are donating because we think there is a good chance that Double Fine, given its track record, will deliver a memorable experience. If it doesn't, then so be it. By donating you acknowledge and agree to accept either possibility.

"HOLY SHIT THE NEW 'MODERN BROFARE BATTLE EFFECT: THE CREED OF THE ASSASSIN' HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED! TO GAMESTOP WE GO!"

"OH MY GOD, I JUST PRE-ORDERED THIS AWESOME GAME OF AWESOME! FUCK YEAH! I'LL GO TO 4RedditOnGAF AND SHOW MY HYPE!"

/3 months later after game releases

"Fuck me."

/trade game back, only get 15 bucks for it
/goes back to Minecraft

Even if the gameplay sucks I don't see how it won't have good writing and probably humor. The gameplay can be as bad as possible if it excels at those two aspects.

Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert working on a point 'n click adventure? Sign me right the fuck up.

I'll definitely be in for $30, but with 33 days left I'm tempted to see if I can swing $100. Because god damn, these guys made a shitload of childhood memories for me.

lots of floppy discs

Insert disc 22 and press button to continue.

I don't care if the game sucks or not. The real juicy stuff here is the chance to see Double Fine's inner workings at full power, even if the team itself isn't all big and shiny. Top-dollar game designers, writers, artists, musicians, and programmers—all making something that they've dreamed of doing, but never have been able to in the current state of the industry. How I love thee, Internet startups that allow for great things!

Maybe the success of this will convince Lucasarts to re-release more of their old adventure games? I can dream, right?

Well the gameplay will be basic point and click I'd imagine, so almost the entire focus of the game is on writing and humor. And if the promo video for this is anything to go by, they've still got it haha

Wait a couple of minutes, hit refresh, and the pledges go up by ~$2,000.

You have the two people who know how to make point and click adventure games. I'm not worried about that part. And they're hilarious.

I'm not worried about any of this actually.

Except only one is confirmed to be working on this project.

Edit: And Deathspank sucks

Even if I was rich I dunno if I'd do the $10,000. I'm not even sure I'd feel comfortable with the $1,000, because what if I was funding a sucky game. While the staff is good, who knows if they'll pull off an excellent adventure game or some crappy Telltale 5 hour repetitive junk.

I think $100 is the max I would do to support Schafer and the genre. I have a feeling even at that, I might be getting horribly burned. But $100 isn't the end of the world. Panty Fighter 2 imported from Japan costs about that much these days.

I could only spare $5. If I hadn't just spent all my money, I'd be dropping way more. Still, I want them to know that I care enough to donate anything at all.

Best part of this arrangement for DF has to be that they will get to own the IP. This will make it much easier to port to ios/android, etc. down the road.

That is awesome! internet bro fist and what not. :D

Tim Shafer's adventure game credits are the very best in the industry anyway. He's all the game needs, Ron Gilbert would just be a bonus.

Didn't Ron Gilbert post something back in November about making an old school adventure game? He posted concept art and everything. That could be the game they are trying to now make.

It just keeps going up, I just can't believe how quickly cash is being sent. Not only that, there are already three people pledging $5,000 to $9,999!
