What to do GAF?

assess your budget and decide accordingly.

The 3DS is a much cheaper option right now and if you have an interest in Nintendo games then Mario Kart and Mario Land 3D are both top drawer AAA games, there's a number of other great games on the 3DS too.

I'm not going to chip in on the Vita, because that's your own research to do - but you need to look at it from a wallet perspective and there IS a huge difference in cost. The Vita won't always be this price, and it -will- come down over the course of the year or so.

If there's nothing you -desperately- want , and if you have misgivings about the library, and you are concerned about the cost - then i'd suggest going for the 3DS.

However, if you have cash to spare and a strong interest in PSP as well as Vita, then it's down to you to compare the price differential.

Only other point of note i'd mention is battery life - i'd strongly suggest including adding a Nyko to your 3DS if you are away from a charger whilst on the go. The Vita surprisingly has a pretty clear battery life advantage.

But yeah - search around - i wouldn't look to a vita thread for unbaised opinion on this and both machines have pro/con points. Luckily , both are great machines so you should be well served either way :)

In depth Lumines impressions, anyone?

Also, I had my first hands on with a real Vita yesterday at Gamestop. The unit wasn't on, but it was light and thin as hell! It actually surprised me when I grabbed on to it, especially since I've been using my PSP more in the past few weeks. Since it wasn't on, I only spent a few moments messing with it though, didn't want to look weird to the other people in the store, haha.

There's a pretty strong possibility that there will be a revised 3DS with two analog nubs built in before the 2012 holiday season, and the price of the 3DS will fall even further with that revision.

I'm doubtful the Vita will get a price drop this year, the original PSP didn't get a price drop for two years. No reason to think this one will unless it bombs hard in the US, which I don't think is that likely. The Vita caters to americans gamers and their preferred genres far better than any other handheld that came before it.

Call of Duty Vita for one will sell an awful lot of Vitas.

It's a shame that Phantasy Star Portable 2 isn't compatible (yet). Games like that and MGS: Peace Walker were fantastic except for the horrid controls. I'd love to play it again with a second stick...

While I don't doubt that statement, I feel it should be worth noting that there hasn't even been any word on when the game will even come out. It could be in a year or two for all we know.

They just need to port the console versions, so I don't see why they would need to take so long. Looking at the quality of the games out right now during the launch period, a console port is very much possible and it wouldn't lose very much. Could run at 30fps, which would be totally fine considering it is a portable game.

Are apps like Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, etc downloaded from the store or are they part of the default OS? Want to know if they are saved to the memory card or if the VITA has a tiny tiny bit of internal memory available for that.

For COD Vita to sell great there needs to be a joint advertisement between Activision and Sony to raise awareness in the holidays.

Show a COD montage on a vita screen then advertise the strengths of the Vita and it's features.

I just think this generation has taught us that it isn't safe to assume that just because a game is expected to come out for a platform, doesn't mean that it definitely will. I'm sure that it is not 100% guaranteed that COD comes to the Vita. Particularly if the Vita sells so low that Activision decides that it wouldn't be worth making a game for it. At best they'd probably just end up porting the next COD game.

They're downloaded from the store.

So I was browsing the suggested YouTube videos for me, and I stumbled across a video called "The 7 Best Apps on the PS Vita." The video isn't too good (nothing out of the ordinary mentioned), but the woman mentions something interesting at the end.

She says that the twitter application allows tweets to be streamed over your game. Is this true? I've heard nothing about this, and it sounds like something I'd really like to use.

Here is the video. Sorry about the mobile link.

She mentions it at 2:12 if you don't want to watch the whole video.

Even then, the next COD will be out Nov 2012, just like every other COD game. And like other COD games, it's going to simultaneously be ported to every system it can be. I would be surprised if the Vita version doesn't come out at launch.

Hell, even Modern Warfare, Black Ops, World at War and Modern Warfare 2 all released on the DS in time for the holidays.

The twitter feed in the app doesn't even auto update itself, and no, you can't stream twitter in a game.

Maybe in the future.

If it wasn't bad enough that all these medical bills ruined any chances at a Vita until next Christmas, now I'm having knee surgery on its actual release date and then going out of town that weekend where it would have been perfect, lol.

This is the first handheld where I feel like I need it at launch. Of course no one needs it, but it still feels that way! :D

Thanks for your response. That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

That's an odd thing to make of note of, hopefully it's coming in the future. :3

Have preordered Vita now at Swedish gamestop because of a really good deal. Chose Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom as my free game (picked Virtua Tennis first but then read the review at gamespot...).
Preordered Everybody's Golf Invitational on Elgiganten for 299 sek and then Starter pack, cradle and 32gb memory at planetaxel.com.
Seems like the price for the starter pack is about the same in US and EU but the 4gb is missing in EU.
is that right? Any other differences?

I have to disagree, there are a lot of games after the launch, little big planet, persona 4, mortal kombat, little king's story, dragon's crown, warrior's idontremember(ex ruin) and many more.
Remember the most important thing on a console is the lineup, don't look at other things, if you like vita games buy vita, if you like 3ds games buy 3ds.

I think that we' ll see ff type 0 and monster hunter portable 3 on vita.

Sounds like you want a Vita. ;)

Thx for the anwers guys! Money is not an issue, I had it saved for 3DS last year, decided to skip that, by now I have 400EUR easily. I was surprised about the launch offer, 275EUR sounds really like a good starting deal.

I also cannot wait if I want to have any gaming time. For the next two months I will literally have 5hrs of free time a week.

Games will also be cheaper for me - I have limited time now and that means fewer games, but I would also want to finish them (+trophies!). If I can get a game for 34.99$ from US PSN it blows 3DS out of the water - handheld games in Germany are 40EUR at least. Surprise, surprise, my main PSN account is a US one!

3DS gets Theatrhythm, Vita gets DJ Max Technika, and I played PSP DJ Max games for hundreds of hours.

Vita then.

I'm planning on picking up resi directors cut and metal gear solid from the store so I can use them for remote play. Gutted resi 2 isn't on the uk store though! :(

I'm getting the PS Vita First Edition Bundle with Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Lumines: Electronic Symphony, WipEout 2048, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, and Super Startdust Delta. I'm just wondering if there is any games I'm missing. Also, I'm trying to decide if I should get Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 or BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend.

And if it's what I suspect it is (new Treyarch game, same one that's on every other platform that can house the proper version) it's probably not going to be THAT big of a system seller. Not unless there's a hidden OCEAN of people who want the full CoD experience on the go.
Get the $299 3G bundle. Seems like a better deal. For now that 8gb memory card is more than you'll need. At least you'll have a game to play also. What game is it, though?
That's very dependent on WHAT you want to put on the card though. Just Vita games, yeah, unless you're going purely DD and buying EVERY title at launch or something crazy then you'll have plenty of space. If you're getting PSP games (or HAVE them) however you could instantly fill up that card day one, it's one of the big reasons I'm feeling the Wi-Fi Vita + 16 GB is better for me. Well, and the fact I don't particularly care to pay for the 3G when I'm not even big on the social aspect of gaming anyway, and for all I know they'll have a new version that's either 4G or just not locked to AT&T exclusively.

It looks pretty similar to the 3DS launch to me, maybe a tiny bit stronger.
Tiny bit stronger? :lol The only launch games worth a damn at 3DS's launch were pretty much Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, PilotWings and Super Street Fighter IV (and Professor Layton in Japan), the rest were pretty much mediocre iterations/ports from other platforms. And apart from Pilotwings, Nintendo's early 3DS support was weeeak. Vita has a much, MUCH stronger launch line-up starting from Sony's own offerings (Gravity Rush, Wipeout, Super Stardust Delta and such) and continuing in what seem to be some quality 3rd party stuff. Most of the 3rd party games for 3DS were half-assed portjobs or simply not that special as games, whereas games like Virtua Tennis 4, FIFA and Rayman Origins are not only good games, but they seem like very high quality ports/sequels that compare favorably to their home console counterparts. I understand if you're not interested in, say, Virtua Tennis 4, but I'd say the number of good to great quality Vita launch games seems far higher than with 3DS. Looking at a list of launch games, there are only a few games that seem like shit from the get-go: Asphalt: Injection, Michael Jackson: The Experience and Dungeon Hunters (well, this doesn't seem like a completely shitty game, but it's a full-priced title for a game that's never been more than, like, 10-15$ on other platforms). The rest seem like there's at least SOME effort put into them and they should be enjoyable for fans of the series/genre.

What it doesn't have for me is the cast iron guarantee you have with a Nintendo console that it'll have some classic first party games in the not too distant future and over it's entire lifespan, but I'm still going to give it a shot because if nothing else there's a good number of PSP games I'm looking forward to playing on it.
Eh? Sony has a launch line-up for Vita that vastly exceeds Nintendo's own offerings for the first year of 3DS. The only notable releases for 3DS from Nintendo themselves were OoT 3D, SM3DL & MK7. Sony has games like Wipeout 2048, Uncharted, Gravity Rush, Super Stardust Delta and Escape Plan at or near launch. I'd say Sony is supporting Vita just fine and at least if their past talk is to be believed, they aren't going to abandon it/shift focus to PS4 like they did with PSP and moving on to PS3 soon after launch year, so hopefully that means there will be a steady-ish stream of first party support.

Can anybody tell me at which FPS Hot shots golf runs? The PSP ones were 60fps, you'd think the Vita one will be too with the lower resolution.

I was there for the 3DS launch and im going to be there for the Vita launch.

I honestly love my 3DS, but seriously, the launch of the two systems couldn't be any more different. The 3DS launch was a case of picking the best of a mediocre bunch, which for me was Pilotwings Resort (by virtue of being the only 1st party Nintendo launch game worth a shit), Street Fighter IV and Ghost Recon. With the Vita launch I've already ordered four retail games, intend on buying at least 1 PSN game and am trying to stop myself ordering a couple more games to avoid a £400 launch. Oh, and that's without even considering buying Uncharted yet, which is widely regarded as the most high profile launch game.

So.. yeah. I love my 3DS now but the two launches are incompareable.

Hmm personally I dislike Nintendo pricing - sure the hardware itself is cheaper ( which is as you would expect comparing hardware inside) but games on Nintendo consoles tend to drop in prices much slower than on psp/ps3/x360.

And afaik they are not doing any digital distribution sales like Sony/Microsoft/Steam does.

I'm fully expecting the EU store to not update until 5PM on the 22nd. That way, if SCEE actually put some games up next Wednesday, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'm getting a 16gb card. The logic being that even the 32gb won't survive the duration of the system. I won't be going all digital, so 16gb should be sufficient for the PSN titles. When I eventually upgrade, there should be a 64gb card or maybe even a 128gb one.

I wonder if anyone can clarify the following for me.

Ok I have a uk ps3 and want some psp games that are only available on the us store. If I download these via my us account that's setup on my ps3 will I be able to transfer these to my uk ps vita?

Same as above but with US psone games. Will I be able to remote play these on my uk vita?

Of course, that's exactly what will happen. Or there'll be some fudge up (as usual) which will mean that the game won't be out till the following week.
That's PSN's biggest failure- unreliability.

Unfortunately, Sony will see that lack of downloads as that people aren't ready for it.
