Yeah Lumines is over priced. When you consider it was a PSN title on the PS3 and is even ported over to mobile phones then $40 seems outrageous. Should have been a $15 title, can't imagine they spent anymore time on this then the devs for Super Stardust Delta.
 
As an avid listener of their podcast (since the Arrow Pointing Down days), I can attest to the fact that the Giant Bomb Crew really aren't big on handheld gaming. Patrick is probably the only one that plays them with any regularity.

I thought one of the huge advantages of Vita was the ability to easily port down from X360/PS3 to the machine and to use the self same assets of existing engines?

I wonder how much it costs to get all that licensed music into the game? I'm sure it would put the game outside the $15 bracket.
 
Good answers all around on Rayman. If it has extra content, I'll get it at discount. I don't think it's one of the best platformers, but it's good enough, and it is charming. Just not charming enough to spend more than say $15 for a double-dip.
 
Lumines will be my go-to game before I fall asleep for the next few years. It's been Lumines 2 for the past 3 or 4. Definitely worth my 40 bucks.
 
I think Rayman is worth 40. Maybe 2 months from now it will be at 20 but I needed one other launch game to go with uncharted so I stand by it. I'll be buying Escape plan too so my launch will be fun
 
I guess I really don't understand why Jeff can't have an opinion. I'm buying a Vita at launch and had no intention of ever buying Uncharted...I'm much more interested in a game like Lumines that has a ton of replay value.

EDIT: Rayman is a great game that I somehow got the platinum for, but it was $20 over a month ago on both 360 and PS3...you can beat it and get the platinum easily in a week.

As a fan of both games, it isn't. It's like Tetris for people who love music, visuals, and tight gameplay. Tetris is the same thing over and over, speeding up as you level up. Lumines speeds up, slows down etc etc. No one that's ever got into it would ever accuse it of being a poor man's anything.

Unique, non-console ports/sequels that justify the expensive price and make use of all the awesome tech.

I want to play Uncharted because I love the series, even though it doesn't really fall in to that category.

There's a few other cool puzzle/platformer games on the horizon, but they're basically XBLA/Steam games and don't justify a £200 purchase at all.
 
I'll meet halfway for Lumines at $30, partially because it IS a music puzzler so there's probably licensing fees to be accounted for anyway. Still, I'd rather pay $40 on a different genre, or at least a very different type of puzzler, like Portal or whatever.

Mechanically it's pretty different, but if you like the novelty of Marvel characters and Capcom characters in a tight fighting game together, then UMvC3 is a must-buy. It has a lot of fanservice for Marvel and Capcom fans.

Exactly. Lumines is a great handheld, portable game. I think that's the appeal to me (and Jeff). Whereas Uncharted, Wipeout, etc are watered down console games that I'd rather be playing on my console. I'm excited to be playing Lumines once again on a handheld next week. I tried the iPhone version but Lumines controlled by touch is atrocious.

That could happen with any console or handheld, not just the Vita. We've already seen plenty of developers going out of business lately after not being able to develop the next runaway hit for PS3/360.

The Vita gives them plenty of price points to target - full retail games at a variety of price points, with the added bonus of day and date digital downloads from PSN to generate some extra sales. Or they can choose to develop cheaper games for PSN, even cheaper Minis, or PS Suite games (not sure how much those are, at a guess I'd say somewhere between Minis and PSN games though).

Katamari is my only other "might buy" at launch. How is it looking? I can't watch the stream...

(Unless there is a non Giant Bomb URL version of the stream?)

Just got the latest GamesTM magazine today, due out in the shops on Thursday. They have plenty of Vita reviews, but before I post them - can I only post games that are not under embargo for websites? They've reviewed a couple of games that the sites haven't covered yet, not sure if I can post the scores for those or not.

Lumines is what defined the PSP for much of the first year as well. I did also play the shit out of the Wipeout games on PSP as well but I think Super Stardust and Lumines + gamefly rentals will tide me over until prices start dropping.

Yeah, it looks pretty interesting! :) That black and white game, too, whatever it's called. Escape Plan?

If the console was FULL of titles like that I'd be tempted honestly, even though I don't like handhelds much. Sony seem to just be focused on making it a mini-PS3, which is the last thing I want since I have a PS3 and a 40" TV to play them on.

We're talking about a system launch here. If you are afraid that there won't be any original games coming (although Gravity Daze already is looking very special) you should wait until E3 or GDC.

It's not quite the same. Yes there are risk on anything, but not all platforms are the same. You know there are safe bets and risky bets. For example, developing for anything other than Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo right now for a dedicated console would be a risky bet. Given the nature of the market, handheld systems aren't such a safe bet, especially with Sony coming off the PSP and let's face it, the PS3 has lagged significantly thanks to Microsoft and Nintendo compared to where they were in the PS2 days. The Vita is far less of a sure thing than other platforms. So to say it's a good thing for the industry I don't think is true. It could harm the industry a lot more with the way the shift on mobile gaming is moving.

That's not to say that I think it's a good thing as a gamer where the shift in mobile gaming is moving towards. But, what's good or bad for the gamer, isn't equally the same as it reflects on the industry.

We can only live off ports for so long though. At some point original content is going to be needed. If all we're getting are ports, is this really what we want out of the platform? At any rate, serious development is going to needed to be pushed on to the platform at some point and that costs money.

We're going to have to see how the multiple price points work for developers on the Vita. It won't be good if consumers latch on to the lower price point games and not the higher priced point ones because that's where development will shift towards. Yes it's a risk in the entire industry about development, but another portable platform which pushes more towards developers to have higher development costs for a platform that has a much higher chance of failing is not good for the industry. Putting more developers out of business is not good for the industry for a platform that might not fit in today's market.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the original Lumines $30 to $40 five years ago? Aside from the PSN & XBLA versions, the Vita pricing seems par for the course. I'm buying it on PSN, hopefully it'll be $35.99, but I won't be offended if it's $40.

How is Wipeout watered down? The only major difference is the 30 FPS. And I'm more focused on how much time I spend on each game. I easily spend 30mins to an hour playing Lumines every time I power it up. That's no different from my beloved story driven RPGs or action-adventure games.

Escape Plan is great, I played the demo of it at Gamestation the other day. Definitely the game I'll be getting with the PSN voucher from the preorder pack.
 
I urge people to try out a demo for Escape Plan. It's a really great looking game, but it seemed really gimmicky from what I played. It's a very unique looking game but it didn't strike me with anything particularly clever puzzle wise (only played through the demo so my opinion may be completely off base).

Giant bomb is mainly negative, It's why I don't visit there site or listen to the podcast. It's like there burnt out on gaming in general. I believe it's cause they never get laid and only hang out together drinking in hotels. They have low self esteem and it reflects there work. It's as if they all act like there to cool for gaming, is how it comes across to me.
