Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

So that company has already trademarked the Wii U name or what?
As far as I can see, they haven't done so. But they seem to have a problem with some of the services detailed in conjunction with the trademark, and they believe there is no clear distinctiveness between the two marks, or that Nintendo tries to somehow make it impossible for them to operate their business due to, as they put it, unfair advantages.

So your logic is that they put out a release schedule that said Wii U and then went "Whoa, this isn't right!" because it's not the final name, despite plenty of third parties listing "Revolution" versions in 2005?

The ninjas have a much tighter grip on things now than they did in 2005.

But seriously, if Nintendo really didn't want anybody announcing games until E3 and there is a name change that Ubisoft knows about saying that the list is "inaccurate" would be a truthful way of getting people to forget about their announcement.

Either that or Nintendo are pressing for the Wii U edition of AC3 to have its own subtitle or something.

Ubisoft already confirmed last year that the Wii U was getting the next Asassins Creed. If its anything they are just not supposed to be listing anything related to the Wii U publicly yet. Nintendo has its moments of retardation

"Assassins Creed 3: Super Duper Awesome Edition. Only for the Wii U. Play as a civilian. Beg for money, beg for food, walk around aimlessly, talk to people about how poor you are, start a fight with an assassin and so much more!!"

Old? This announcement obviously goes far beyond potential WiiU implications (IBM is apparently manufacturing Trinity for AMD), but since we were speculating that the GPU might be a 32nm part, perhaps there is some significance here. IBM's East Fishkill fab is where the 45nm Wii U CPU is being produced. Rumors around these boards seem to point at a high level of integration between all system parts, with IBM and Nintendo playing a large role in adapting the AMD Radeon base to the Wii U's specific needs. We also haven't heard anything at all from NEC, Nintendo's historical partner in manufacturing. Might Nintendo ditch NEC and go with IBM/GF for the WiiU?

that's a good find mate.

GTA IV?

EDIT: By the way, Ubisoft has claimed that the entire list of their 2012 lineup is inaccurate, not just the part about Assassin's Creed on Wii U.

Agreed on all accounts.

Going educational would make sense actually. Not just because of the tablet, but because they've already tested the waters with stuff like Wii Fit, and given that they've been taking their cues from Apple since the Wii and the DS Lite, educational software would be another way to put a fun spin on something Apple does (Apple is big on education it seems).

Sorry, bro. Didn't see this post earlier.

Yeah, but more importantly, they would be doing something that Apple really isn't even well groomed for in regards to education. In fact, no company other than Nintendo is really well positioned to deliver something like that - not only do to its skill as a developer and depth as a publisher, but also because it has promoted a family-friendly image forever. And I could easily see education as a new frontier in the 'Wii' concept that would draw a lot of attention to the hardware.

Good. Give them as many reasons/excuses as possible to ditch that name.

My first thoughts upon reading the latest blurbs.

Nintendo can milk some extra news cycles out of a name change story, and staying in the news is essentially free mindshare/advertising.

... Announcement #1: "We will not be using Wii U as the console's final name."
... {reactions}
... {speculation}
... {*repeat until next announcement*}
... Announcement #2: "We'll be announcing the new name on this date: DD-MM"
... {fresh round of speculation}
... Announcement #3: "Here's our chosen name: XXXXXXX"
... {reactions}

If they do the announcement right before E3 and it's well-received or controversial, Nintendo walks into the event already at the forefront of everyone's minds.

They can try and fit AC 1,2, revelations and brotherhood in a deluxe pack in the same uDisc as AC3. You can sell them on the eShop as paid unlockable DLC that will be around 9.95 for AC1 $19.95 for the second one and $29.95 for revelations and brotherhood or buy all of them for a combined price. Now that would be a good incentive to buy the wii u version for those who missed out on the series. and solve the issue of having to store on hdd and download. maybe give one of the DLC as a free unlockable to entice them to buy the rest.

I doubt they're going to have three separate announcements regarding a name change if they do decide to go that route. I think we'll see a press release announcing the name change shortly before E3, similar to what we saw with the Wii, or they'll announce that they're changing the name before E3 and then announce it at the show. I don't see your "Announcement 2" happening. I think that would be pretty ridiculous for a company to try to milk an announcement so much.

Yeah, for my own sanity, I hope they don't try to pull something like that. How many more weeks until GDC?

True. My main goal was to just illustrate how they'd grab attention with the naming issue. I'm not sure if Nintendo has ever done the "we're going to announce the date of Event X on this date" stunt, but I'm pretty sure other gaming companies have done so.. :P

{edit: 2.72 weeks? Ha! Thank you, Fi!}

No problem.

Again, I agree, but I don't think it's a new frontier at all. It was already explored with the Wii, just not to its full extent. I'm sure there was still room for growth in that area on the current Wii, but hopefully (and by that I mean I'm a bit pessimistic) Nintendo will go back to it with the Wii U.

Nintendo is essentially the only developer I can think of that ever pulled off edutainment throughout multiple products. Before the DS and the Wii, education software was niche at best, and everyone thought of it as a joke that could never ever work on the market (including myself). You only have to remember the fad of kiddy pseudo-games for computers in the 80s and 90s. Nintendo understands how to do it better than everyone else in the industry.

I wouldn't mind a modern Mario is Missing. They could even keep the trivia updated via DLC.

When this was brought up, people assumed it was regarding the new Xbox. Because you know, IBM mentioned 45nm and thats what we are going to get.

2.72 long weeks. :/

Not quite sure how to read your post. Is that what you believe?

Just to clarify, the WiiU is not a SoC. That much is clear. That the CPU is 45nm says nothing about the GPU. The CPU won't be an energy hoarder either way. In fact, it would indicate that the GPU would likely be on a smaller process if there's any truth to the rumors of which GPU was in the early dev kits.

These are my expectations too.

As an interesting aside, I speculated that one of the console manufacturers, based on BBoyDubC's posts (who works at AMD) would be using something akin to a customized chip similar to Fusion Trinity (and the rumours of a 32nm SoC with a 6670-equivalent fit right into that on the Xbox side).

I thought it was Microsoft, bg thinks it's Sony and [H]ard has flip-flopped on both. Regardless, I'm not sure if this has any implications that tie the whole thing together for either one.

I got bored and tried to create a packshot with a more retail-orientated approach. Sorry for the main cover, it looks ugly because there are almost no high-res screens of the actual game. But I think that the upper area with the NiN logo looks good :)

Good job, especially for what you had to work with. And I really like the idea of a blue case like that.

the picture sucks though you didn't have anything worthwhile to work with, but the actual layout and the box are quite nice. Simple, clean, slick. Good job. I'm sure what we actually get will undoubtedly be worse.

I shopped it by myself :)
I could upload some kind of template if you want to.

Thinking about giving the unknown Wii U OS a shot, have some ideas, but I will do that tomorrow when I find the time..

Yes, it would be great, I have some free time so maybe I can come up with something =)

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Others are probably more qualified to explain the pros and cons, but I'll take a short stab at it. An SOC would be good for things like size, power consumption, and any theoretical shared pool of eDRAM. However, since it has been stated that the CPU is 45nm, it is a good thing that the GPU need not be limited to that process. A 32nm GPU means less power consumption and/or higher graphical output.

Some others are doing templates similar to the Wii, while others are branching out:

This one would be a bad idea. Not that it's ugly, but it just looks too much like the Wii boxes. I think Nintendo learned their lesson about how important product differentiation is.

Most are choosing to include blue in the design.

Damn!!! =0
I see myself buying a Wii U game looking like this. It looks phenomenal.
by the way... WI-FI Connection?
I think somebody didn't get the memo

Totally agree. Even I have to admit that my mockup looks too Wii'sh.

But that is what you get if you name your console Wii U. Nintendo knows that.

On the ebook discussion, wasn't there a rumor about the 3DS getting eBook support? I think Kindle apps could be pretty powerful marketing. While in itself not a compelling reason to buy the Wii U, it's certainly an attractive feature.

Use the Wii U to put a children's book on the big screen and read to your kids, put the newspaper on the tablet to read the news while your partner watches TV, and it all syncs to your 3DS so you can continue from where you left off from the comfort of your bed!

No one's made a Blu-ray-sized case template? Not that it really matters either way.

There's probably nothing stopping Amazon from getting a development kit and making a Kindle app for the eShop right this very minute. (Why Nintendo doesn't normally reach out for stuff like this is a whole 'nother topic of discussion.)

I have wondered for years why Nintendo does not branch out into this field. If they collaborated with the appropriate experts on whatever subject they were tackling I think this would be a good fit for their skills. They excel at creating a simple and intuitive user interface, making fun software that feels good to interact with, whilst teaching you the way it all works but masking that very well at the same time. It could be a useful avenue to explore and a potential sanctuary if the video game business becomes impossibly toxic for them for whatever reason.

Well, they do make "edutainment" games and such.
But with Nintendo, they try and make it stuff that will appeal to more than just a specific group (in this case, kids/students).
Much like the Brain Age games and the American Kitchen program.
They have to make it a real game, even if it is "educational".

Indeed but I am suggesting that they should explore bespoke software made for education authorities. Branch out from retails software, in other words.

Well, they do, in a sense.
Especially in Japan.
Schools used DSis and now 3DSs for students with special built in programs.
But, I honestly doubt they'll branch out to like making stuff for Leap Frog and what not.
They want to keep their franchises and name on their own systems.

After seeing the amazing eShop exclusives the 3DS has received, I am highly interested in what Nintendo has in store for Wii U's eShop.

Most of the recent Wii u case/cover mock-ups are white/blue/gray. Is Nintendo really going with this color scheme again? Seems to me that they should use at least one different colors to differentiate the Wii u system titles from Wii titles. Otherwise I could see a lot of Wii owners buying Wii u titles thinking they'd work with the old Wii.

True so that makes me curious why they haven't done more of this. Not enough resources I guess.

We have no idea but yes, hopefully it won't be white again. I think Blu Ray case size would help for a start.

NO. Less art for the cover, or it ends up squished. NO NO NO. Keep it DVD sized, and just make the cases Black in America, Blue in Japan and Green in Europe/Australia
