GAF Plays: Mass Effect series (unmarked spoilers)

Does anyone else have some weird graphical bug in Garrus loyalty mission? You know the last part where you gotta meet with Sidonis? I dunno what's wrong, but something on the windows around the part when you leave your car seems to do...something. It's hard to explain, but i'll let this video show it :

First 1:30 min of the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43SleCGrQrU

Mine does it too. I have no idea why it only does it in that specific scene.

I have never romanced to anyone else, I was with Liara since the start and and the end of the Shadow Broker I asked about us, we talk, kissed, and it seems that I'm still with her.

It seems that I won't get the Paramour Trophy this way. It's okay, but will there be a scene with her before going to the suicide mission? I kinda want it but not sure if that will happen...

I really hope something good/rewarding can be waiting for me on ME3 if I keep it this way.

If I remember, you just look at her picture in your cabin before the suicide mission, no extra scenes or anything other than that.

Playing through ME2 again just to refresh my memory. Nearly done, just have the IFF, Tali's loyalty and arrival.

Finished LotSB...it is super weird playing this with Liara NOT being a romantic interest.

Started Arrival and I am just facepalming again at how stupid it is.

"We call it the alpha relay, it works exactly like the one the reapers focused on in the first game"
"Mass relays are indestructible? Ive heard that. No one has ever tried so lol"
"Im not stupid, we are not indoctrinated by this ominous reaper artifact, silly"

And then I saved an turned it off.

Good to know that something might be rewarding me for staying faithful in ME3. Can't wait. Thanks for all the answers fellow GAFfers.

On a side note, I'm thinking about getting the Art of the Mass Effect Universe, anyone already have it? Is there any pics or is it worth it?

Not sure if this is OT, but is Arrival DLC worth getting? Just got the ME2 recently on the PS3 and not sure if I should get it

If you really love the combat and can't get enough ME2, sure.

If you just want story stuff, or you're kind of "eh" on the idea of it, you can skip it.

Finished Shadow Broker. Man the stuff you can read and look at after you finish it is fantastic.
Also great to see Liara back in action. Combat stuff was a bit boring, but the payoff makes up for it.

I'm going to replay Mass effect 2 after I finish playing Mass Effect 1, when is the best time to complete the LOSB DLC? I beat it at the very end before, but I wonder if the game would be more interesting after i beat the game?

This is how I tend to view the DLC:

Overlord - Before Suicide Mission
Shadow Broker - After Suicide Mission
Arrival - Final thing you do

The dialogue between Liara and Shepard back on the Normandy after Shadow Broker does change whether you do it before or after the Suicide Mission.

My very little knowlegde about level design tells me that it is some glitch that apparently is pretty popular with this engine or they made the terrain in that scene smaller so consoles could take it but designers were sloppy, so no chances for a patch because they would have to make it from scratch

Why couldn't the Asari councilor just mind-meld with Shepard like Liara and Shiala did in order to get evidence about the Reapers?

Also, if you scan all the keepers in ME1, that scientist guy e-mails you in ME2 with findings that seem like pretty solid evidence that, at the very least, Sovereign, the Citadel, and the Keepers were built by the same beings, who were NOT the Protheans. He even has evidence about the signal. Any chance that'll come into play in ME3?

So I edited my savegame for ME2 so that Ashley should have survived and Kaidan died in ME1. Any way to check if it worked in ME2 if you finished the main story already?
There only was one encounter with Kaidan/Ashley if I remember correctly.

Dude, don't even start trying to question the holes in the story logic, else you'll find there really isn't any. Hell, I remember thinking way back when ME1 came out "Why the fuck is there not ubiquitous recording equipment on any and all soldiers!?" Then I remembered that there actually is, as evidenced by the recording we see of Ashley screaming at the camera on (I think) Eden Prime. That "camera" is supposed to be just another boots-in-the-mud marine, right? So where the hell is YOUR recording equipment?!

There are holes and inconsistencies everywhere in the damn thing once you start to look. And while they generally DO do a better a job with the story than most games do, it's hard not to be a bit disappointed by the whole thing, especially considering the tone and thematic direction they decided to go for in the sequels.

My CE's of ME and ME2 (360 versions) arrived the other day and i am about to start the great replay.

Haven't played the first since 07? whenever it came out and was wondering to people who have played multiple times what's a fun class? i played soldier in both ME and ME2 but i want to try a fun class but is also viable on the hardest difficulty, i hear adept is really fun.

Any input?

Edit- Forgot to ask, any guides on how to
save everyone at the end of ME2? i have a game save right up to that last mission and want everyone alive when i play ME3
I put spoiler tags just in case new players are here.

Am I the only one NOT playing a one-way Paragon on Renegade Shepard and actually trying to gear my characters towards specific personalities?

Posted earlier in the thread, but here's a guide to how to choose who plays each role in the Suicide Mission.

The one thing that the chart somewhat conveys is that it's crucial that you leave at least two of the group of Grunt, Zaeed and Garrus in order to have no casualties during the hold the line segment.

As for spoilers, the title says it all: Unmarked spoilers in this thread.

You are aware that the dude who wrote that had never written for Bioware before and that that was his first project, right? LotSB having fun quirky writing is the exception, not the norm, as anyone who played the ME3 demo can tell you.

I played the demo. I liked the writing. Pretty liberal with the cheese, and lots of "It's our LAAAST chance, we have to FIIIGHT" lines. But I liked it. Anderson playfully mocking Shepard/Garrus and Wrex banter/Mordin being awesome as always.

Replaying the first game right now. Wrex/Garrus is the best team to have and thus any imitations in the sequels will never live up to it.

Myth: You have to go all blue or all red to end up with every squad member loyal in the end.
Verdict: Busted!

I just finished my 30/70 Paragon/Renegade game in Mass Effect 2. All members recruited, loyal, and alive at the end. The Miranda/Jack fight was easy, but I had to pick up a spare for the Tali/Legion one. Sided with Tali, convinced Legion that Tali was going through some rough times, so I had to be gentle with her. (How exactly that is Intimidating, I'll never know...) Legion found that to be an acceptable logic, so we were buddies again. Yay.

It was kind of fun to actually roleplay a Shepard instead of metagaming one. This one is probably the Shepard I have with the most personality. She's brutally honest, ruthless to her foes, but if you're her friend, ally or crew, she'll go above and beyond to help you. So when the Collectors took the crew, well... The Collectors had to die. All of them. Saving the base was not an option, even if it would have been the Renegade thing to do. The Geth heretics had to go, too. They were the enemy after all. She did save the rachni in ME1, though. The queen hadn't hurt anyone, and she'll only commit genocide on species that pissed her off. And yes, she did hug Tali. Even if I ever do an all red game, I'm taking that Paragon interrupt. Always.

It was also kind of fresh to play a Renegade that wasn't a complete jerk. That's what the 30% Paragon were for.

Anyway, the Vanguard class. Fun! If there were two opposite ways to play Mass Effect 2, it'd be Infiltrator and Vanguard. Funny enough, those are the two classes I'm taking to ME3. The Infiltrator is all about setup and headshots from afar. Good fun. The Vanguard is all about momentum. When the Charge combo gets running, only a Pyro can really ruin my day. Also, thank you very much for telling me about Reave. Just what I needed to fill my Armor hole. Plus, it ended up being a so stylish kill on the Human Reaper. Raise hand, glow with biotics, Reaper's head explodes. That's my Shepard! Also Shockwave beats Husks so clean. Free tip, if you're not a Vanguard, bring Jack when you expect Husks. Get the wide Shockwave. Point and laugh as they break on impact. Not very sturdy those Husks...

Speaking of Jack, it was interesting to see her story when playing a female Shepard. I do like to use her for Biotics Specialist in the Suicide Mission. It just seems like a fitting end to her growth. When you first meet her, she's angry and just wants to kill and destroy, and in the end, she's dependable and willing to protect everyone. I think that's a nice character arc.

Anyway, two characters ready for import in Mass Effect 3. Two characters that had their humble beginnings on Eden Prime in Mass Effect 1.

Are there any other games that let you import characters twice in a row? I know the Baldur's Gate series let you import from 1 to 2, but I can't think of any other game that allows you to do a full trilogy like this. Going to be fun, I hope.

Not in a long time. The Bard's Tale, Might & Magic, and Quest for Glory series did this off the top of my head.

So I decided to do an infiltrator playthrough off ME1-2 as a refresher and make it my main character, but the sniping in ME1 at least at the beginning is about the worst thing I've ever seen. Does it get any better? (The constant moving of the scope is annoying as shit)

It only gets better when you have a lot of points put into the sniper talent. Even then the sniper will move the first 2-3 secs when you first zoom in. At least it stops after that.

So you imported your character from ME1? That makes a huge difference in the paragon/renegade thing and actually gives you a lot of leeway in choosing opposite of your primary alignment.

I think people having problems started a fresh character in ME2.

Holy shit, I do not remember the Matriarch Benezia fight being this shitty. With all of these commandos using lift on your cover, the frame rate goes to like single digits. And it doesn't help that Geth Snipers can seemingly shoot through walls.

Man, I'm about 10 hours through ME and I think this game has not aged well. Like, at all.

Yeah, but her ME1 stats were 80/20 Paragon/Renegade. The Renegade Interrupts sure pushed her redside. I really had to stretch to win Legion back, though. +100% Renegade skill and wearing the Death Mask. But I got the "I was lying" red text to light up, and that's what matters.

I hope there's a choice to blow up the Reapers in the end of ME3, just for the sake of letting this Shepard be consistent. Heretic Geth? Blown up. Collectors? Blown up. Reapers? Shepard wants big boom!

360 or PC? I was actually thinking the opposite on PC. Inventory and elevators still annoy me, but I can easily overlook them because I enjoy the rest of the game so much. I'm about 10 hours in as well but I haven't made it back to that fight yet because I did a lot of side missions on the Citadel and around the galaxy.

Obviously 360, PC doesnt have issues of having framerates in the single digits. ;)

Yay!

Excellent quality book. Nice hard cover, huge clean prints, and nice vibrant colours. Chaptered by each game, so there's an entire section devoted to Mass Effect 3 I can't touch :(.

Thanks EatChildren, I asked earlier for some info on the book since I was thinking about getting it.

It's at an okay price, would you recommend it? From the reviews I read on Amazon.uk the Mass Effect 3 parts does not contain spoilers (story wise) but if you wish to go blind on all fronts, yeah, don't touch that.

That makes sense. I only remembered hearing about the texture pop in problems on the 360. I mostly asked because I've been surprised how little I am feeling like the PC version is dated. This game is still great. I just wish I had more time to play it right now.

If you're a nerdy fan then yeah, absolutely, it's great. The print quality is excellent, it has a lot of pages, tons of art, and covers all the games. I got it from the Book Depository, and it's currently going for AU$33.60, which is a little less than what I paid for my pre-order.

The only 'negative' is that it does miss a couple of things (eg: no Batarian art), and that it doesn't feature a crazy amount of annotation, so it's not like you're going to get a lot of text to accompany the visual art design process. Lots of conceptual art and sketches though, and each page usually has a small blurb detailing general direction for the art piece.

Thanks for answering, well I'm not a nerdy fan, I guess, but playing ME2 for the second time, finished ME1 and can't wait for ME3... Guess that makes me a fan.

Only ordered one time from the Book Depository, maybe I get it from Amazon.uk, will also post impressions here if I get it, if that's okay.

On topic: Almost done with all the stuff before going for the Mass Relay 4. There are some misc. stuff to do but I'm not sure if it's worth it. Going to try the perfect suicide mission without nobody dying. By the way is it possible to reach level 30 in one play session? Im currently level 20 so it seems unlikely.

Yes, if you have all the DLC and do all the N7 missions. Especially yes if you imported at least a level 50 character from ME1 or you've already played ME2 (the achievement for beating ME2 grants a 25 percent EXP bonus in subsequent playthroughs).

I imported a lvl 50+ ME1 character to play ME2. Which made me start the game at lvl 3.

I'm already lvl 30 and i got the 3 DLC missions left(Overlord, Shadow Broker and Arrival), the IFF mission, Legion loyalty mission, half of the Firewalker ones, a good bunch of N7 missions and the suicide mission.

I think you really have to skip a lot of things to finish the game and not be lvl 30.

Can anyone tell me why it seems that everyone likes Ashley more than Kaidan? Compared to Ashley's xenophobia, I've always preferred Kaidan's down to earth demeanor. And in the first game, I could very much relate to his sense of wonder and curiosity with all the aliens and worlds you encounter.

Personally, I don't like Ashley, but I find her more interesting. Kaiden is just boring. If they were real people, I might like Kaiden better, but as characters, Ashley sticks out more.

On a side note, I'm thinking about getting the Art of the Mass Effect Universe, anyone already have it? Is there any pics or is it worth it?

Got mine on Friday. It's nice, it has really thick pages and a quality feel to it. The art is very heavy on concept art. I shouldn't be surprised, I guess, I just wasn't aware it would be that much concept art. Like full pages for every character/species showing all the different concepts and then the final version. Almost a little overkill on some of that. If you can get it for a reasonable price (I had preordered from Amazon for just over $25, no tax, free shipping), and you're a big ME fan, then go for it. I'm sure it's not the last ME art book that'll be produced, but at least this one ties up the trilogy well.

Posted earlier in the thread, but here's a guide to how to choose who plays each role in the Suicide Mission.

FYI, I only had Grunt holding the line the first time (Garrus was in my party, Zaeed was sent to escort the survivors) and Mordin died. I played the ending again, swapped out Garrus for Mordin in my final party, and the entire crew survived. I couldn't bear the thought of losing Mordin. Chatting with him after the final battle and hearing him sing Rodgers and Hammerstein was worth the final battle replay.
