No the GPS will work on wifi. The 3G is for browsing the web(which I do alot actually) the near functions,and all the multiplayer games all on the go.

What does it say if you try to? Like has anyone tried to go into the PSN Store on their 3G and download a demo or game? Or tried to play HSG6 or Wipeout or something on their 3G? Does it give you an error message?
Also, curious on whether or not you can create custom folders and organize your content.

No. It just went live about five minutes ago. The Playstation blog announced it today.
Ditto on the TV part, I've owned a PSP on and off for most of it's life but only just started getting into JRPGs. I found Monster Hunter unplayable so that is the game I am most excited for at launch.
It would have been nice if Capcom/Sony had sorted out a Vita port of Monster Portable 3rd for launch. That could have really helped the series too.
I am really looking forward to FFX on Vita since I haven't played it and I would love some more ports/remakes/sequels to other RPG franchises. I imagine it is only a matter of time before we get a slew of RPGs since the PSP RPG developers are already there.

Yep it's official, I can't leave this thing in standby mode for a while without it either needing to be hard reset to turn on again or the screen coming on but showing a black screen. This has happened every day.
Go into setting and click on system update. You will find a new update.
The old 1.60 update introduced the Maps app. The new 1.61 update will "improve certain aspects of the system software," whatever that means.

What if im not near wifi then what? I recall someone saying there NEAR stuff updated without the 3g plan but just using the gps satilites. Im just confused because theres no GPS settings and no icon for whenever its being used.
Really? That's quite unfortunate. Which model do you have? What was running in the background? Did other owners have the same issue as you?

Everything I have seen says that the 3G version is the only one with GPS. Am I mistaken?
I'm willing to bet that's what today's 1.61 update is for. Try it and see if it helps.

I believe it hit Japan units 3 weeks ago and it is a launch update for the Vita here in the US.
Idk about the near updating without some kinda data running through it. GPS is just better to use with 3G it is more acurate. I enjoy the 3G alot actually.
This last post makes more sense. Because I've had the maps and played around with it already.
I'm looking forward to the remakes too - even though I've played them. I'm just concerned that no big name has committed to the hardware yet. Especially because when it comes to the big Japanese RPG devs, announce to release to localization is a long time. I don't see a big Vita JRPG for a very long time

Thanks for the reply. I like collecting physical as well, in fact I will purchase the physical copy of any game I buy if available. However, I think the smarter thing to do would be to get the Wi-fi Vita and the $60 16GB card, which would be somewhere in the ballpark of the 3G bundle anyway.

I have had it happen twice today, and ONLY today since getting mine on the 15th. The only change is I am not connected to a network here at work. I am going to test this out when I get home and see if it is the lack of network causing it or what? If that is the case I guess I will be shutting down instead of sleeping my Vita until we get a firmware fix.

My question is how can you tell when the GPS is being used, theres no settings in the settings menu for it, and Ive never seen a GPS icon pop up.

Actually the features are old as it was in the previous firmware (1.60).
Try the new update they just released and see if it deals with it.

That is part of the plan as well. Its pretty big thing to not be able to put the system into sleep. Especially after having a PSP for years and basically never turning it off, just sleeping it.

Someone also mentioned that the games so far that are on-line are turn based type? So fir Tennis, Wipeout or Ridge Racer you actually cant play against people on-line unless that game is more turn based like the golf game?

Nope there is no icon it just hidden in the network. I understand what youre talking about most phones have an icon that tells you when it is trying to pull up your location.yea the vita doesnt seem to do that.

You can play on the go without 3G use a hotspot or play at starbucks using wifi. You can use the 3G for online play.

Just add both the WiFi vita and the 4GB card to your shopping cart then as youre going through the order steps the cost will show that you got 19.99 credit (essentially you get the $4GB card for free)

i'm thinking you just have to add it to your checkout and it should take it off auotmatically. assuming amazon trying to match with targt there.
Thanks! Hopefully they send my games early tomorrow then so there's a slight chance I'll get them on launch day (although probably not as I only used super saver delivery).
