GAF Plays: Mass Effect series (unmarked spoilers)

Is there a highres patch for Mass Effect 1 (steam version) around?
Textures (ultra-high setting) look very blurry.. so much that I'm thinking there is something wrong with my installation.

Edit:
Ok I found out, selecting ansiotropic makes a mess. Now with linear everything looks ok.

There are a few textures you can get but it's a pain to get them working because you have to force them in via Texmod which makes your initial load time very long. The whole Mass Effect series has bad textures...

!!!

You're right! Less than 7 gigs for a 3 disc game! What the heck is this? What's stoppin' me from playin' ME2/3 straight off my HDD?

I think the Games on Demand policy has something to do with releasing games day and date with retail.

ME3 will probably be downloadable in 6 months or so.

Ha. I brought Morinth and Grunt to Tuchanka in ME2, went to see the "doctor", and there was a spot to click so that Morinth could say something. She mocked the Krogans for being too violent and for dying quickly thanks to that(something like that) and Grunt replied "Go away asari slut". :lol

OMG. Whoever translated ME2 in french, you're not funny!

How does: Jack's "Puberty? Grunt's growing up" turn into " Grunt wee-wee is getting hard?"

HOW?

I've saved Lair of the Shadow Broker & Arrival for ME3 Launch so I should probably play those this week I guess.

I thought the other ME2 DLC was okay. I hope Lair lives up to the hype.

Grunt has some of the better lines in ME2. When you enter the derelict reaper and see all the blood and dead bodies "Anyone else hungry?" And I like that Jack is a total bitch to Miranda no matter the situation, specifically the loyalty mission when the Asari at the end is bad mouthing Miranda.

So quick question: when you start a new game on ME2 with your previous ME2 playthrough, your upgrades don't transfer, but your armor purchases and all the weapons you unlocked (including the ones you get via upgrading like the Cain) transfer over, right? If so, I think I know what I'm doing with the rest of this playthrough before I go through it one last time for my ME3 save.

Yep. Even the additional weapon training found on the Collector ship transfers. You can redistribute the points with the lab for some Element Zero

Excellent. I know what I'm doing then: buying all the armor/getting all the possible weapons on playthrough 1, then not having to worry about them on playthrough 2. :)

I don't this was mentioned in the thread. But Garrus is getting a DC Comic

For anyone who didn't know like me, Udina/Bailey has a comic available for free

So I started replaying Mass Effect 2. Got about ten hours in, got to the Miranda/Jack confrontation...And the paragon dialogue option wasn't available despite doing like every paragon action/decision I could. So I lost Miranda's loyalty, and now I can't get the perfect ending. Which was the entire point of replaying it. Fucking stupid.

If you go back and talk to Miranda, you can regain her loyalty through a different paragon/renegade check.

Also, you can still have everyone survive with one nonloyal squad member, as long as you don't bring her with you to the final fight. In fact, you can actually make a non-loyal Miranda the distraction team leader the second time, and she'll survive even if she isn't loyal.

She's the only character who you can give a job to while not loyal and still survive, btw, but only that single job.

You also have to have leveled up that last skill in the list that gives you Paragon/Renegade point bonuses. It's one of the biggest problems I have with ME2.

I played a ton of my third run yesterday. The Vanguard is extremely overpowered with Champion and Heavy Charge plus the rifle as a specialization weapon; the Mattock rifle is ridiculously strong. Then again, I'm playing on Normal, but still. I'm currently doing Tali's loyalty mission with Legion. I only have Legion's loyalty mission to do afterwards while I wait until the crew gets abducted. It's pretty fascinating to see how the Quarians react to Legion; people are either scared of him or fascinated by him (well I should say "it" but since it's a man's voice, I call it a he).

If I expose Tali's father, do I still have a chance to romance her? Otherwise, I'll just use the intimidation options and lie to the Admiralty boards. As an alternative, I'll have this Shepard pork Miranda instead. If I end up with Tali, I'm gonna break it off with Liara once I do LOTSB, otherwise, gonna stay with Liara.

After playing the ME3 demo, I realized that the default Shepard in this game looks butt ugly in comparison. I've always rolled with Mark Vanderloo Shepard across every male Shepard run because it's the best looking character model. But the creepy smile oh dear God! That thing is horrible! I hope Bioware doesn't bring back the creepy smile in ME3. It was bad enough to look at it ME1 let alone ME2.

I still love how funny the Renegade interrupts are and all the funny remarks that Renegade Shepard says (I haven't been playing as a Pure Renegade despite having a Ruthless background; about %75 Renegade, %25 Paragon). I intend on saving all the crew members and blowing up the Collector Base. I chose to keep the Genophage, had Jack kill the guy, stopped Miranda from killing Niket, stopped Mordin from killing Maelon, and I kept the Cerberus information to myself among other things.

It's weird how in every ME1 run that I did, I was never able to bring myself to kill Shiala because she was pretty innocent and I felt bad about it afterwards.

*Facepalm* Touché. On second thought, I think I prefer creepy smile Shepard. That scene is devoid of any facial expressions. It would have been nice if Bioware brought the real Shepard in to do some facial expression captures, and put it into the game.

Finished my ME2 playthrough. Did it on Veteran because I didn't feel like doing it on Hardcore or Insane (not worth all the grief of dying and reloading or doing all the defense stripping). Finished Arrival and parked the Normandy in orbit over Earth.

Apparently ME1 imported faces don't have face codes so I spent about an hour and half with Fraps and starting at my screen to recreate my Shepard's face in ME2 for a code. Came out okay in ME3 since I don't want to (or like) the new Shepard face they made (that or I got too attached to the one I have already).

Can you respec without any of the DLC? I can't seem to remember (though LOTSB let you respec squadmates) because you can always try respecing to get the +100% P/R score, beat the dialogue check then respec again for the combat bonuses.

Shepard was always able to be respec'd, it was only the squadmates that got it in LOTSB.

The Vanguard can be a powerhouse even on Insanity, if played right. I remember zipping across the battlefield like there was no tomorrow, and fun times were had by all.

The video of that guy charging head-first into the Colossus on Haestrom on Insanity comes to mind, as well. Thing didn't stand a chance.

I just did the collector ship and i was suprised how early i had to do it. Still needed to recruit Thane, Tali and Samara and did no loyalty mission. Playing as an adept for the first time, and it's my least favorite class so far, most of the powers are useless because of the armor/shields/barriers.

You're probably just getting confused because in ME1, biotic powers were absurdly OP. Insanity really forces you to make heavy use of your squadmate powers for defense stripping.

Yeah that has definitly something to do with it, i just finished ME1 with an adept, which was freakin awesome, now it's just meh..

Playing Mass Effect for the first time. I'm putting all my points in Soldier and Combat Armor.

How do I change classes or whatever? I'm still early in the game. Past Nihlus death and I'm at the Citadel.

You mean specialize in a class? That's going to come much later in a side quest that involves going to Earth's moon. Otherwise, you can't change a class ever in the game once you pick it. Soldier is a tank, so you should be able to breeze through the game.

When did I "pick" a class? I just put points in it cause I thought it was like an attribute or skills table.

Like I put X amount of points in it and unlocked the fitness attribute/skill tree.

Serious questions. I'm super noob.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but anyone know which comic we're getting with the collector's edition of 3?
Invasion.

Anyone know what I have to do to kill pretty much everyone except Shepard and two party members of my choosing during the Suicide Mission? I want to have the most barebones ME3 playthrough possible just to see how Bioware deals with files like this.

I got through 2/3 of ME2 on Insanity but I stopped because defense stripping become more of a chore than anything at that point. And I was playing as a Sentinel so it's not like it got too hard for me since I could deal with barriers and shields just as well, just felt too tedious.

Good move. Learning to play soldier first will give you a general idea of how the powers work. It will also force you to watch your teammates use theirs, thereby teaching you how to use those abilities as well.

I've played soldier through the entire series for their weapon versatility and adrenaline rush. Now that grenades are back in 3, soldier's not quite as worthless on higher difficulty levels.

I think this is why I love Engineer so much. Between Overload and Incinerate, you can take down pretty much everything except Biotic Barriers, which are the least common type of barrier in the game. And given that so much of ME2's strategy is taken down defenses, it's useful.

Then you also have Cryo to take down Husks, and AI Hacking, which really only needs a single point to be effective. Add in the Drone to flush people out of cover, and it's a really fun class. Shame that it's by far the least played.

In fact, I think I play the least common combination of things: A custom female Engineer Shepard.

Can you still make her your love interest as well?

I think once you regain her loyalty things reset so it's possible. I'm not 100 percent certain, though.

You picked it as character creation :) Solider, Sentinel, Infiltrator, Vanguard, Adept, Engineer.

I wouldn't worry too much, playing a Solider is a fine place to start to get use to the gameplay in ME1. You can focus on your powers primarily, and slowly get a grasp on the biotics and tech talents of your party members and see when they use them.

To clarify, at the VERY beginning of the game, it asks you to login. If you pick John Shepard, you start the game without making any other choices, and you become a Soldier that is a Sole Survivor spacer.

If you choose enter other ID, you then get to pick from backgrounds and a class.

A guide to creating a character in ME1.

Ah yes, silly me, thanks for adding that. I guess I've never known that as I just went for the new identity option or whatever it's called.

That doesn't make any sense.
I don't know but that is what happens.

Btw.
It's the second time I try to play this game and I hate its gameplay. Again I don't know if I'll be able to continue, even though I'd like to see the story evolution, because I find it unbelievably bad. It is so approximate and raw...
And menus are nightmares.

Not really. Warp is extremely useful and the only power you need to max. Just have someone with Overload on your party at all times like Garrus or Miranda (especially Miranda because she also has Warp) and someone with Concussive Shot preferably, and the game becomes a breeze even on insanity. If you choose Barrier as your extra power and shotgun as your extra weapon you are pretty much invincible. Things like Shockwave and Singularity work extremely well for crowd control when you've dropped everyone's resistances (you can even "detonate" biotics with warp again) and leave pull/throw for charging targets. Singularity even works to temporarily disable people with shields on. I agree that at first it's really hard to manage with global cooldowns, but you'll get the hang of it.

Sure, Warp is really usefull, but i've been spamming warp with all my other classes you know. I want to mix it up, but throw and pull are useless when they still have their shields/armor
Singularity seemed to be nerfed compared to ME1, so maybe that's why i'm a bit dissapointed.
Thanks for the tips though

This is why I'm going to save Jack's Loyality mission for last on this playthrough. By that time I should have a maxed out Paragon meter.

Gotcha. Yeah, biotics are not as fun as they should be, especially when on harder difficulties they only drop more armor and barriers on enemies for challenge. It discourages variety by making a certain team comp essential for sure.
