Is anybody else having issues with the demo crashing on the PS3? I had it crash twice while tricking in Bulldog. It may just be my PS3 or my hard drive going bad, though. The whole system just shut itself off. No lights or sounds or warning either.
Woke up and downloaded it this morning. Only had a chance to play it once, but it seemed pretty good. I chose to use face buttons for tricks, but it seemed like I had to move the right stick anyway in order for the trick to come off as impressive. Couldn't figure out how to jump either, but I guess that's what I get for skipping the tutorial.
The button controls make most sense to me. Run yourself through the tutorial a few times and you'll start to get a feel for it. It does a good job of breaking it down, but here it is in text which may help you grasp it (pun intended) better.
Here are the four basic tricks:
X = left hand grabs left side of the board
B = right hand grabs right side of board
Y = both hands grab top of board
A = both hands grab bottom of board
And you can press two buttons in rapid succession (tap the first one, then quickly hold the second one) to do more complicated tricks. For these, the first button indicates what hand you use and the second indicates which part of the board that hand grabs.
Left hand tricks:
X->B = left hand grabs right side of board
X->Y = left hand grabs top of board
X->A = left hand grabs bottom of board
Right hand tricks:
B->X = right hand grabs left side of board
B->Y = right hand grabs top of board
B->A = right hand grabs bottom of board
Two hand tricks:
Y->X = both hands grab left side of board
Y->B = both hands grab right side of board
(I don't think there is a Y->A trick, but somebody please correct me if I'm wrong)
For ALL of these tricks, press RT and you will tweak the trick out.
To do your unique SUPER UBER, press any of the three trick buttons (X, B, or Y) and BOTH RT and LT.
It's a system setting under "display" options on the PS3 itself. Are you not using an HDTV? 4:3 is only an option if using 480i or 480p.Anyone know why the Demo is in 4:3 aspect ratio for me? I tried looking in the video settings for widescreen or something but the option doesn't exist.
I haven't played my PS3 in a while so I'm unsure if it's a system setting or something with this game.
But even in Tricky the speed of your twists wasn't nearly as fast as this. On my first run ever I was pulling off shit I couldn't dream of doing with Kaori after mastering SSX2. I just spam buttons and see a bunch of flailing on screen (so fast I can't even tell what's going on), then let go just before hitting the ground. I almost always come off the incomprehensible flailing with the board facing down, landing without thinking about it.
There was a certain challenge to SSX to not only know when to stop your tricks, but also stop at a moment when you weren't upside down. There was a whole risk vs reward aspect to it. I'll keep playing, but so far it feels as if the designers thought that a 4320 was more awesome than a 1080. In my opinion, not really. I can't tell a 4320 from anything else really. When I saw a 1080 or more in Tricky or 3, I instantly knew what I just saw. Here, if the text didn't tell me, I would never know.
I noticed that as well. Not a big fan of that.In this new one, you have to press a button combination, release, press another button combination, release, and so on. Not a big deal, just anoher needless change that makes it feel less like SSX and makes me question my pre-order a bit more.

This is exactly my thought. I don't know if the camera is pulled back much further than I remember...but the tricks are just a blur of super fast spinning and one random leg sticking out. No seeming sense of finesse, of knowing what your real spin momentum is, no real difference between a front/back spin and a side spin. I just felt like the tricks were just meaningless flippy spins then a random string of trick names and a huge number. meaningless.
the tracks themselves also lacked personality. i like the idea of the open mountain...but i think back to tracks like Mercury City Meltdown and others, with the huge set jumps, fireworks, lights....the color, the announcer. more an X-Games Snowboard Supercross with setpieces rather than backcountry snowboarding.
I don't know...i was all gung ho about a new SSX and after a few hours with the demo i am out. just not what i wanted. real disappointed.

You can adjust the camera in the final release. Maybe that will help quell the speed gripes I have. All in all, kind of feeling the same. Probably won't cancel my preorder or anything but I'm a little heart-broken at how disappointed I am so far.
So I haven't gotten a chance to dl the PSN demo yet (I will when I get home today), but I have a question about the controls.
I keep hearing about the two control schemes, and it sounds like the "Classic" setup uses the face buttons for tricks? Why the FUCK doesn't the classic scheme use the R1/R2/L1/L2 setup like all of the previous games? That makes absolutely no sense to me.
When you try the demo you will realize how silly it is to whine about there being no punching in this game since there would never be a situation where it would be useful. The levels are a lot wider and the game is a lot faster.
The classic setup does use the shoulders for tricks. The "new" control scheme allows you to use either the right stick OR the face buttons for tricks.
maybe. all in all i guess the game wasn't what i wanted/expected. not the game's fault necessarily...but i thought back to SSX2 and the tight, bright colorful kind of "arena" courses that had clearly marked lines, set-piece ramps/jumps, the fireworks, bass hits, and a trick system that forced you to think about the progression on your spin/grab.
even after 2 hours in the demo, i just felt like it was still spamming flips and grabs while i tried to figure out where the hell i was going.

I know what you're getting at, the whole no collisions = not "real" racing, but I still feel the heat when I race someone's ghost data in the demo. I feel like I'm racing, as if they were there with me, almost. And that's just in Explore mode. When the full game comes out and we can be racing in the same space, at the same time, you can react. One of the things I find interesting about Explore is that, depending on whose ghost you're challenging, you're tempted to follow their route and copy their style because that's the best run they've posted.
Finished downloading and playing it now. It's my first ssx game and holy shit this is amazing and holy shit I'm terrible at this. I've struggled just to get bronze and I just happened to get silver by luck. Now I have a question, Is the only event the race it? I've been looking at some of the responses and I see people talking about some guys 35m trick it event. Is there any way for me to unlock trick it or am I just stuck doing race it events?
Exit the event, and on the globe find New Zealand, for the trick it event, the demo does a terrible job at making this clear.

Would like some more impressions of the PS3 version, though. Is there really input lag or an unusually large dead zone? Is it really less sharp than the 360 version? Etc.
You may want to try this, it's got exactly what you're looking for:It left me wanting a pristine mountain with no music, tons of deep snow, no rails, no goofy trainwrecks or busted-up pipelines. Just me and a board. I hope there's a lot of that in the final.
As for the differences in the demos, I played the 360 version most of the day and easily matched my best time on the PS3 version on the very first run. They feel identical.
So the difference between the PS3 and 360 version seems to just be the controller? I might be going with the PS3 version then. I think it might feel weird playing the game on a 360 controller.

So I play the demo for like 2 hours now and still going on, bottle of wine in me, family member must have gone up the stairs to tell me that its fuckin loud and bassy down there and I love it!
I am not so good and noticed that if I want to change something I must leave r2 and buttons alone and press them again.
How I love when I am in tricky and run dmc remix starts to play- my blood is rushing.
I will get better and then kick some serious ass.
Misterska, Funkee and Jason...You are next... I will break the 8mil score...
Europe PSN updates around 4PM (5PM CET)!
Though nothing is stopping you making a USA account and downloading it there.
How in the heck do I pull off the big tricks?!
When in Super TRICKY state (when the word TRICKY is glowing orange at the bottom of your screen) press both triggers + any trick button.
But how do I do that with classic controls?
Between that uncertainty, not being able to boost and press at the same time (because can't hold X/[] and press the right stick), and the spinning advantage that may or may not be in just the demo, maybe I should switch to standard controls.

But without any physical contact-- a cornerstone of the SSX series and the sport itself being based on multiple riders having to interact with each other in a race.
Not to beat that dead horse anymore, I just think its cute that a video game is named after a sport where you can shove each other but instead throwing in ghosts. It's like if football let you run trough everyone's ghost as you time trial to a touchdown.
I think I hit 7.7 or something close. I know I beat Dragnet - that's all I wanted to do last night. My first victory over a GAFfer.![]()
Standard controls are really easy to grasp when you wrap your mind around the fact that X/Square is your left hand and B/Circle is your right.
