Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

Have you watched Five Centimeters Per Second? If not, you should check it out. It's an upbeat romance/drama with beautiful visuals.

The movie's only about an hour long, and it'll provide some much needed mental/emotional healing. You don't want to go totally numb, after all.

You guys are horrible. 5cm after all that crap would have me inches away from insanity.

I found the page back in the first fall anime thread that starts the initial reactions to Blood-C's finale when it first aired. They are a lot less overblown than the stuff you guys are posting now.

Starting from post 2400 or so, there's like fifty posts with reactions to the Blood-C finale. Just the first four I see on that page:

Blood-C fin: LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL MOVIE TIME 6/10
Saved the entire budget for that episode. The action scenes were pretty outstanding, particularly that sword fight which was very nice. I burst out laughing at the _____ scene. Can't wait for bluray release, that was so fucking gruesome.
Blood-C 12 - TV End

That was seriously amazing. I've been enjoying this series from the start, and I was never trolling when I said it was the show I looked forward to the most each week. I'm a huge CLAMP fan, and this is basically a perfect example of the classic CLAMP which I love. It is completely over the top, makes no compromises, takes a totally inane genre troupe and turns it into hilarious action entertainment bordering on self-parody.

The production values are great, and the fights were mostly all very well choreographed. The music is definitely the high point of the series. But man. This ending. THIS is what I watch anime for. THIS is what anime does from time to time that no other medium does. THIS is the feeling I have waited for. THIS is it. The euphoria of seeing the unbelievable and unexpected wash over me in frame after frame of delicious incomprehensible visuals.

THANK YOU ANIPLEX.

THANK YOU PRODUCTION IG.

THANK YOU CLAMP.

I will be ordering the R1 BDs the moment they are available. I cannot wait for the movie. Holy fuck.

ANIME STATUS: SAVED NOW AND FOREVER (PROTECTED BY SAYA)
[Blood - C Finale]

There are no words.

Seriously thought, that's pretty impressive. It's not often that violence in any anime, or regular production, is sufficiently visceral and generally unpleasant to watch. Well played.

As for THAT SCENE. Well...it pretty much goes far beyond what any anime has done in this area. Setting the new standard for misanthropy.
And it just goes on and on like that.

I was seriously under the impression that Blood-C wasn't that bad and was almost thinking about watching it.

Now I don't know what to believe anymore.

I had to adjust the link to go to page 25 for me, but reviewing them... I think there's a big difference in reaction if you compare having a spread out viewing experience (where the final four episodes alone take a month to play out) to the more compact viewings people are doing now. Going from "Kyou mo ii tenki~" to... well...
gazYh.jpg
in the span of days or hours is going to be pretty brain-breaking.

Also I think the reactions to episode 10 or 11 were a lot more enthusiastic, from what I can recall. Marathon watchers can just roll that OMGWTFTROLOLOL into their finale reactions.

Patlabor 2 The Movie

Decided to go ahead and finish off Patlabor and glad I did, simply for the fact that I now have it behind me. Wasn’t as good as the first one and for me it was boring. I don’t need a fight scene every couple of minutes but give me a little something besides long panning shots and monologues. I know the movie does give you more than that but come on! Let’s see some mecha action for Christ’s sake. First movie at least had three this one only had two and the second one didn’t even last long.

I can understand why people like Patlabor 2 and I did enjoy it myself. I just don’t think it’s great or anything and I can’t see myself ever rewatching it.

@ ABlackFalcon

I agree with your review 100%. Not much else to say besides that.

Gyo

Well that was a rather entertaining way to waste an hour. It's low budget, it's ugly, its cheesy, it's got sex scenes, weird science(very weird at that..lol), strange monsters. It's basically a old school b-grade horror flick with all the cheap thrills, bad effects, and stupidity that comes with it. I had fun watching it, its the right kind of "bad".

The latter half of the OVA is hilarious.
Fart powered spider humans. loool

Is there more coming? I would watch more of this.

Orihara got a tiny bit of screen otherwise a pretty emotional episode for Saiko. The best episodes are focused on him. Anyway I guess were finally getting ready for some good manga instead of the kiddy stuff.

Its still awkward having
Shujin married

That sounds about right, actually. Well, that plus the more recent increased usage of images as accompaniment to reactions.

Even months later I still can't answer for sure whether
leg split
or
bunny blender
is the show's defining moment.

Probably the latter. It was just the peak of all the insanity in that episode.

Can't think of any other show last year whose ending was more memorable, or shared by so many here, to such an extent. (Well I guess Madoka but w/e)

If I had to sum up Blood C in one word, it'd probably be "impressive."

Is it good? Is it worth watching? Is it enjoyable? I don't know. But is it impressive? Yessir.

edit: marathoning is definitely the way to go.

I dunno man,
bunny blender was horrific, completely over-the-top, unsettling, hilarious, goofy, and inconceivable, all of which describe the show perfectly. On the other hand we have the moe moe twin character who turns out to be a complete bitch get attacked by a giant monster, lifted up by her legs as she desperately begs and pleads for her life while visibly pissing her pants as we watch her agonizing for those long 5 seconds, fully aware of what's going to happen to her and yet in disbelief that they would actually go through with it except they did. And the whole scene is accompanied by one long gratuitous panty shot. Yellow panties, no less, because our CLAMP bitches are stylish like that.

Seriously, it's a tough call.

Shall we allow the uncensored version to judge this match of gruesome wits in the future?

For me, the
wishbone scene
is the appetizer, whereas the
blender
is the capstone, the crowning moment of the feast, the moment where everything comes together.
The jeep is dessert.

Well, that sounds like it had a completely different tone to the original manga. How very, very disappointing.

Wtf, c'mon. Okabe's engrish is just as bad as the customs guy.

Can't they ever find someone who actually speaks english for americans? Only show I remember where there was an actual english VA was the background technical gibberish in Zegapain.

Sky Crawlers, Eden of the East, Sacred Seven...there a are a few examples.

Vampire Princess Miyu TV 16

Look at that symbolism.
Unlike most episodes, I think a "new beginning" may be attainable for the priest, since she was denied Miyu's illusionary eternal happiness.

The sound direction wasn't quite up to this show's usual standards; wasn't a huge fan of their choice of effects.

Haven't watched those, but i've heard good things about Eden of the East.

I remember being amazed that the English in Eva was actual normal English and not gibberish.

That was only in the rebuild movies though, right?

Man, I felt embarrassed on his behalf when watching that scene.

With Blood-C still fresh in my mind,
blender
is vastly more representative of the insanity of the series than the
leg split
. The latter didn't really overshadow the cumulative horror of the previous few episodes even though it was quite gratuitous, but the
bunny blender
could have only been dreamed up by a supremely malevolent, contemptuous, gleefully psychotic mind and encapsulated the trolling and total lack of respect for the audience that defined Blood-C. It might be the most horrific thing I've ever witnessed in an anime, and yet I had a huge smile on my face through the entire finale because I already knew I was being trolled and just decided to bask in it because I'd never experience something quite like it again.

Does the manga play it straight horror?

Junji Ito, the manga creator, doesn't really do straight horror. His works are far more disturbing, off-putting and creepy. There's a touch of the Lovecraftian cosmic horror to a few of his works as well. The original Gyo is fairly scary in the classic sense at points in the opening.

Ah I understand. Then you're correct, this movie is not that at all. I take it the manga art is a big contributor to what you are talking about? I mean the storyline is pretty laughable, so I'm guessing its treated in a way that makes it more horrifying than funny.

Here's your damn Mysterious Girlfriend X cast listing:

Mikoto Urabe -- Ayako Yoshitani, a complete rookie seiyuu
Akira Tsubaki -- Miyu Irino
Kouhei Ueno -- Yuuki Kaji
Ayuko Oka -- Ryou Hirohashi
Youko Tsubaki -- Misato Fukuen

Wasn't Omigawa supposed to be in this? Duckroll will be crushed.
