Short Stuff

Saturday mornings are super again. Harkening back to the glory days the 1970s and '80s when kids got their weekends going with Super Friends and School House Rock, Cartoon Network is launching DC Nation, a programming block that showcases the heroes of the DC Comics library. Anchoring the hour will be the CGI show Green Lantern: The Animated Series (10am/9c) and the continuation of the first season of Young Justice (10:30am/9:30c). Scattered Throughout the hour are animated shorts and interstitials with news and vignettes from around the DC universe.

Though some of the shorts feature big names like Superman and Batman, many will put the spotlight on "characters we've always wanted to see animated, but that might not be able to support a whole series," says Peter Giardi, senior vice president at Warner Bros. Animation, which is coordinating the block. Among the second-tier characters featured are Black Lightening, Doctor Fate, the Doom Patrol and even Vibe, a short-lived Latino member of the Justice League in the '80s.

A humorous tone runs through all the shorts, including S.B.F.F. (short for Super Best Friends Forever), which stars Batgirl, Supergirl and Wonder Girl and "has plenty of action and fighting, but is really much more focused on comedy and laughs and how much fun it is to be a superhero," says producer Lauren Faust. "It's like taking a teenage experience but putting a superhero spin on it, in one episode, Supergirl and Batgirl try to convince Wonder Girl to sneak out in Wonder Woman's invisible jet to go for a joyride." Guess even supergirls just wanna have fun. –Rich Sands

Each SBFF short runs just over a minute. "it's like telling a visual joke," says producer, Lauren Faust.

that title can be passed around to a lot of characters sadly.

Yes, but not many super Heroes are teen pregnant by the third book.

Having and under aged, Black and pregnant super hero as one of the main protagonist was such a ballsy move. And The Rocket was an amazingly well written character.

Unfortunatly I doubt that The Rocket will be a single mom in the Young Justice cartoon.

stephanie brown was a teenage mother. the former speedy was hiv positive. sometimes hooks work, sometimes they dont. but she isnt really special in that regard except that she happens to be black and a former crack addict.

Terra has had one good story.

Gambit has none.

step to me bandit. gambit was a horsemen damnit.

Your mixing up The Rocket, with Flash Back. The Rocket was never a crack addict.

The Rocket being pregnant wasn't just a hook to give the character an edgy backstory. It was the reality of her situation. She got knocked up by her boyfriend before the super hero sidekick thing fell into her lap. She just found out in the third book. It was the way the writers dealt with her being pregnant and increasingly so throughout the run of Icon and made it unlike any super hero book I've ever read.

The thing is, she wasn't a stand out character. Especially not from the rest of her milestone labelmates. Was she a better written character than the majority of the dc lineup? No doubt. But compared to characters like holocaust and wise son? Not so much. Which is why I said the underrated character title can be passed around quite easily.

along with green lantern and Young justice coming back. Its been a LONG time since i've actually wanted to wake up early on a saturday morning.

Holocaust and Wise son were great characters, but they were well written, larger then life comic book characters. The Rocket never felt larger than life, and that was what made her a much more appealing character IMO. She was always written as an actual human being whom just happen to be and black teenage single mother. Although the title of the book was called “Icon” and Raquel was technically the side kick. Everything that Icon was, meant and stood for was birth from Raquel’s imagination.

The Rocket WAS Icon.

The Rocket is easily up there with Static as one of Milston’s best characters.

and yet they differed on various things, including political views. and it wasnt a one way street. rocket may have given icon a human identity, but icon gave her a super human one.
and how is her story more compelling than any of the characters caught in the big bang? they were all humans living their lives until freak circumstances altered them. the only difference is that while rocket did, the others didnt have a choice in becoming what they were.
they are no more "larger than life" than she is. except that she happens to hang out with actual superheroes. they are trying to make things work for themselves, like her.

Really excited for tomorrow. Will be tuning in at 10 for the whole block. The entire family was glued to the screen last week. The shorts were a brilliant idea.

that does not look amazonian to me, it looks hispanic. either way i dont like the character design on her.

Also Wonder Woman is an Amazon and she is white as fuck.

i dont think you understand that there are a lot of different looks for amazonians.

I'm still not getting what exactly about that design indicates Hispanic. She looks more ethnic than the other two, to be sure, but that's magnified when the other two are red- and blonde- haired Caucasians. She's got a more tanned, exotic, Mediterranean quality about her -- which is something that frankly Donna and Diana should have.

it isnt really a tanned look. it is a yellow. very clearly yellow. not even olive. and since no Wonder Girl has ever looked like that it bothers me.

but yeah i could see Diana and Donna having a more Mediterranean quality. this one just doesnt look like it to me honestly.
