I think Infinity Blade II looks better than anything on PSV personally, the iPhone 4 is approaching two years old, and isn't even a dedicated gaming device. The iPad 3 will probably completely outclass the PSV.

I'd say it's on par with PS2.

PSP was the real technical beast of the Sony systems in terms of it's peers.

Basically its not the PS2. Nothing ever will be again unless the market collapses and relaunches (again!). Which isn't that unlikely (if people don't adapt to new-gen and brands mean less, its open for a stronger competitor to come in after the market stagnates for a long period of time) - but still, Sony dropped the ball with PS3 and lost its brand and customer loyalty. Its one of the big brand failures of the 21st century; and yes their strategy to keep selling PS2's worked very well - but they forgot Microsoft/Nintendo were still competing with them as well.

Vita hardware is good. I just don't think its necessary. Too many wee bits and pieces to make it sound exciting, yet the back touch screen will most likely be underused by developers. Great graphics, but why is that important on a handheld? Some of the best DS games kept things simple (we already saw this fight lost with PSP VS DS - people wanted gameplay/games/affordability and a good system)

Vita looks good on paper. Its hardware is decent from a power perspective. From a consumer perspective its a bit rubbish, silly and really a bit unnecessary.

I am a consumer, I don't want to play games on a tiny, low res 3DS screen ..... I have an iPad and some of the games are good, due to the limited control methods a lot of the games begin to feel very samey.


Hardcore gamers still exist! ...... hardcore gamers like high end hardware (hardware is decent you say, what other portable games console has better?), proper control scheme (3DS frankenstick says two sticks is important) and full on console games experience on the move (why should I accept diluted games experiences just because I am using a portable).


A lot of recent gaming trends has been the move away from the hardcore gamer scene (I hate that phrase).

This makes sense from a business perspective but just because we have seen the gaming industry expand into other markets does not mean that the hardcore gaming base no longer exists.

Kinect, Wii, Casual ....... they are not for me!

I support innovation of course, but I like two sticks for control as a foundation (give options for others), high end graphics and full on, high level games.

The PS2 was a pretty fast (but unbalanced) piece of hardware when it was released. You can't call a piece of hardware unimpressive just because it couldn't match systems released a year and half later. That's absurd.

On topic: other than both being from Sony and having BC I don't see the similarities between the Vita and the PS2 at this point. Sony's new handheld needs more hype, much better hardware and software sales and much better third party support (among other things) to even begin to dream of being like the PS2.

Other than that, it's a really nice piece of hardware and it deserves some good sales and support.

Fair enough, though it was 2 years after shenmue 1 came out. MGS2 is still one of the best looking PS2 games, but most of the launch titles looked like PS1 games. Dreamcast had other great looking titles close to launch.

On the topic of Infinity Blade II looking better, I can certainly agree, but we have not seen all the Vita has to offer, and it does not have a ton of substance. The iPad 3 may outclass the vita but it is a tablet computer, not a handheld gaming device.

Of course it does, the iPad is not having to process half the things a game with a full control scheme, higher level of interaction or a large scale, fully interactive gaming world.

If we're discussing the technical performance of the systems, I don't see that it matters. The only way a PS2 wasn't impressive at launch is if you're comparing it to something other than game consoles. If you're doing that, you have to treat the PSV the same way.

And iOS is directly competing with PSV, if you like it or not.

I was never all too happy playing games on the DS to be honest, it has some amazing games I would never have passed up, but I always enjoyed gaming on the PSP more for screen size, and analog nub, no matter how bad it was at times. 3DS is a similar story, I will never deny the quality of a good game, but I will always consider how I'd enjoy it more elsewhere. I don't care for 3D and the dual screen only really mattered for TWEWY. It's usually just a convenience that saves a button.

Vita doesn't come with a forced new media format, isn't too overpriced, has launch games and the competiton is quite different.

Vita will be a smash hit once the mainstream sees more of them. It's an absolutely wonderful device, playing games like Wipeout, Super Stardust HD and Uncharted with it is mindblowing, console experience on the go first time ever. It's a completely different market from the quick touch iPhone games.

But it is a fact (technically an opinion) that is 100% irrelevant to somebody not having an interest in the Vita launch lineup.

People got burned by the 3DS' first 6 months on the market. It was a disaster of epic proportion and the only solution was a massive price drop.

That alone is enough to make people apprehensive about buying an even more costly portable. Add to that the disaster the vita is in japan and confidence in the platform is very low.
