GAF Plays: Mass Effect series (unmarked spoilers)

I'd like to imagine that the beacons were a Prothean creation. In my mind, they are the true heros of the Mass Effect and their tale is so tragic. Come on, give 'em something.

Well, I'd like to think that their worth comes from the fact that sapient species are unpredictable in ways even the Reapers in all their knowledge couldn't imagine, so in a way it's better if they have their own technology work against them. That's why the theory of Protheans and Humans being more closely related makes sense. Well that, and because it also ties neatly into these depiction of the other alien species developing at a slower rate than humans (even when being more advanced), and how mankind is so diverse and driven and they have space jesus and everything and why the Reapers find them so appealing and useful.

The Mass Effect games didn't really properly develop the Protheans, in my opinion.

Every thing they tried to do failed, for the most part. Even their contigency contigency plain nearly backfired, and it was only because Saren was careless enough to let Shepard snag a beacon that it didn't. In the end, Vigil held out long enough to pass on the Protheans' last breath, but man, they sure didn't make it easy.

They even got subverted into the Reapers' primary bitch. Damn, son.

Any changes to the infiltrator class in ME2 im really disliking it in ME1

I haven't done Infiltrator in 1, but I am playing as one in 2 right now. You get a cloaking ability and no one is able to see you when you enter it. You can line up headshots with it and it does a damage boost too. The sniper in 2 doesn't sway around like in 1, just still like Halo. Also, you can upgrade an ability that slows down time for a bit as you scope in. Its a pretty fun class I think.

So a colleague wants to get into Mass Effect and bought ME1 on Origin (5€). Is there a way to set/force the games audio and text language to English? Origin has the bad habit of downloading and installing in your "location" language.

So was wondering if someone could test something for me. To do this you're going to need 2 different completed save games for ME1 on the 360.

Can you load up ME2, select new game and then Import ME1 Character. When you get to the Character select screen, are you able to select more than one of the character profiles?

I finished ME1 last night, and when I got to the ME1 import select screen it seems to list both of my characters for import, but i cant move between them. It only lets me select the first entry in the list (which isn't the character I want to import). The rest of the functionality on the screen works, I can change storage device, select the character it has highlighted and back out of the menu. But it wont let me change the character I have selected.

So if someone could check to see that this isn't just happening to me it would be much appreciated.

Also, if this is a know bug/issue does anyone know of a work around? The only thing I could thing off would be to copy the end game save state file to another storage device and then switch to that, but i read that the end game save file is hidden and cant be copied.

I remember having the same problem, try using the d-pad instead of the analog sticks.

I played the Arrival yesterday and the story completely sucks in that. Why would the indoctrinated doctor, who wants the Reapers to come through the mass relay, not destroy the place before Shepard got there. Why even tell Shepard all of that information? Why take Shepard to the asteroid?

I seriously think they just came up with that awesome shot of the mass relay spinning in the background and decided to make DLC out of that. It was an amazing shot and a great backdrop for a fight, but that DLC could have been handled a lot better.

Hey guys,

I'm thinking to get Legion before recruiting Tali. The problem is this is my ME3 Shepard and I want to save the whole crew which get abducted by the Collectors after acquiring the Reaper IFF. Can I still do the Loyality quest of Tali and Legion and save the whole Normandy crew?

Not to turn this thread into the Mass Effect Questions Answered Thread, but why hasn't ME2 shown up on Games on Demand for the 360? It's a perfect candidate, no? I was sure it would happen long before now, and I'm perplexed why it isn't on the store.

I think you can do 1 or 2 quests after you get the IFF, before the abduction starts.
Taking Legion to the flotilla is pretty cool.

I decided to dust off my copy of ME1 and actually play the game.

I started playing over a year ago but somehow got bored once I reached the Citadel...how could I be so stupid?

Absolutely loving this game so far. By the advice of a lot of my friends they told me to play as female Shepard; which I have. Might be helping me to still play but boy has it been fun.

I just became a spectre last night, hoping to get in a few more hours tonight. Somehow I've done well of not fully spoiling myself on the story of Mass Effect on a whole, so everything is pretty fresh for me.

Really? I hope so. Yep. It's pretty funny to see how the Quarians react to him. But I never took him to Tali's recruit quest. Maybe it unlocks some new dialogs.

There is. Not many, but the Quarian with the rocket and Tali do say something about Legion. And both are quite funny to watch. They're all "WATCH OUT THERE IS A GETH BEHIND YOU".

Getting close to the ME3 release day, called today to the store and they gave me 100% sure I will be getting the Collectors Edition. Yay! It's going to be the birthday present from myself and the lady.

Regarding my second play on ME2 I just hope these two things don't have a big impact on ME3:

- I did not play the arrival DLC.
- Jack is dead.

It was a great battle, someone had to die...

I replayed the last part of ME2 at least 10 times until Jack survived.

Glad I have a super awesome clean save now to go into ME3.

How is that possible? I mean if you got her loyal and dont put in her in stupid situations like in the vent or as a leader, she shouldnt be dying.

So this is how i plan to go into ME3

Paragon Shep Everyone Alive Romance ME1 N/A ME2 Miranda (Kaiden Alive)
Renegade Shep Everyone Alive Romance ME1 Ashley ME2 N/A (Ashley Alive)
Neutral Shep Everyone Alive Romance ME1 Ashley ME2 Miranda (Ashley Alive) (I plan to use multiplayer in ME3 to aid this shep)

Why so many times, is it really that hard for her to survive?

She died on the last mission in my case. I wasn't expecting because even she was not loyal, I did not gave her any role when it came to choose the specialists (to go to the vents, etc).

There is only one decision in The Arrival, and it is literally made null and void within 5 seconds of you making it.

The relevant events you don't have control over will be recapped in ME3, so you'll be fine.

No shield or something like that is instant death to her.

I know, but he said he replayed the last mission like 10 times. You upgrade the Normandy shield before that and if you dont she dies before the mission even starts.

I thought people said that in the demo, they barely mention what happened in the Arrival. Unless that changes in the real game?

Im doing

Main is Femshep, Renegade but everybody lived loyal to Liara (Ashely Alive)
Punisher Shep, Renegade, tons of people died, cheated on Ashley with Jack and Miranda.
I have 4 more ME2 saves, no idea what happened in al of those honestly. I'm working on a paragon right now.

Haven't played the demo, and don't want to know. I want to experience everything fresh.

The demo itself pretends ME2 didn't really happen. Except for one tiny tiny detail.

I'm sure the actual game will though.

Of course it will, its not like they're gonna ignore the 10 new squadmates we got in ME2, not to mention the Illusive Man, Cerberus and who knows which other characters we saw. :P

Man, I love ME1's finale. Killed Kaiden, even though BioWare didn't really try to flesh out the hypothetical of FemShep actually letting Ashley live (it didn't even have to be a forced romance, but just... more than what we actually got).

Currently 4 hours into ME2 (hopefully I can beat the game + all of the DLC within a week). Holy shit, Infiltrator is easy-mode on insanity. I remember banging my head against a wall when playing as an Adept or a Vanguard in Insanity. Here, sniper rifles are still effective and Incinerate pretty much trivializes armor and health regeneration.

Yeah, the fact that she leads Shepard back to the asteroid is weird. They also choose to capture him alive even though the Reapers, as far as I know, have made every effort to kill Shepard. They actually did have him successfully kill once. Maybe it could all be explained away with the way they were indoctrinated. They thought the Reapers were bringing some kind of salvation and maybe they wanted Shepard to see but it all comes off very awkward. The final fight and the climax were both cool, I just wish they were set up a little more naturally.

Kinda sucks that ME2 doesn't raise the level cap at new game+. Now all I have to look forward to is respeccing.

Anyway, can I still launch ME2 through Steam after installing the updated textures?

The way you do it is you rename the MassEffect2.exe executable to something else like MassEffectBak.exe and rename the TexMod.exe to MassEffect2.exe and place it in the same directory. Then when the launcher launches the game it actually launches TexMod and from their you choose the actual Mass Effect 2 executable that you renamed and load the textures.

Really one of the coolest abilities. Also the class specific weapon you get is quite powerful.

My worst fear is that Miranda & co. will only show up the same way in ME3 like Wrex or Ashley did in ME2.... ugh, leaving them out completley would probably be better than that.

Considering there is so many squadmates in ME2(not to mention they can all die), yeah i do not expect them to have big roles if Bioware put them all in ME3. At best, it will be one sidequest and bye bye Miranda! Have fun with your sister in Disney World! Or whatever is left of it.

Speaking of dead squadmates in ME2... Garrus seems to be quite important in ME3 considering he is in so many screenshots. What will happen to those who let him die in ME2? Replaced by his dark twin Garros?

One more week to find out!

We don't know exactly what role each character plays, but from what I've pretty much every single major character from the past two games will show up and be given closure to their stories. Reading the Q&A over on the BioWare forum, they mentioned that
Kasumi has an appearance, and though it's not overly major her integration into the quest is interesting and done well
. They also seemed to imply that some people will
join the Normandy's crew, staying with you on the ship.

That sounds good. It would be cool if Bioware just gets out the big budget for ME3 and just makes multiple fullblown characters, even if some people wont see them in their first playthrough.

Here are pics of bonus and standard armors in ME3. Bonus armors without helmets FTW:

I'm completely bummed by the fact that so far, the only non DLC new squadmate is James Vega :( In ME2, they brought back the best of the team as squadmates (Garrus & Tali) and ME3 looks to revisit even more of the originals. ME2 had loads of interesting squadmates (IMO, Mordin, Legion, Thane) and seeing they're not squadmates is a big letdown.

My other question is about performance. My system only as 3GB of RAM and my GPU has 1GB of RAM.

I just tried it out yesterday on my machine, i7 920 @3.9 Ghz, 8 GB ram, 3GB 7970, and it actually killed the framerate on the Normandy bridge or anywhere else where there were a number of crew members on screen at once. I was locked at 60 fps, always without the mod, with the mod, when I look out towards the front of the Normandy from the galaxy map, the framerate drops to 26. I haven't had much time to decide how I feel about it yet. It's a pretty huge performance hit.

To anyone else using the improved textures, is my experience normal?

I would be sad if Mordin and Legion don't have a large role in ME3.

Mordin for giving sex advices, and Legion for his in-game conversations.

I take it you guys missed the whole first half of the DLC where Shepard is tasked with breaking the doctor out of the Batarian stronghold and investigating her Reaper invasion claims? And then pilots the escape shuttle? Kinda hard to destroy the place if she is being held captive, and kinda hard to investigate her claims if Shepard doesn't examine the evidence.

Nope, I didn't miss anything.

Shepard was there to rescue her, first and investigate her claims that she had evidence of a Reaper invasion, second. She voluntarily gives Shepard all of the specifics of the project to destroy the Mass Relay. She didn't need to tell Shepard the exact plan they came up with and show him the countdown. If she didn't want to go through with the plan, she could have made something up. He actually wanted proof so he could justify the loss of life and she gives him that too. Without that he wouldn't have went through with it himself.

Arrival doesn't even add anything to the overarching plot other than "yup, Reapers are still coming" and doesn't need to exist. Scrap the Alpha Relay plot and the Reapers are still heading towards the galaxy. Put Shepard on trial for their actions with Cerberus. Bingo, still get the same intro to ME3 without the stupidity of the Arrival plot.

If you can do this, are there ways to add or remove weapons? I want to see what an Adept with only pistol is like.

Don't you actually get a bonus, like a non-global cooldown, if you only carry one weapon?

Not sure about a non-global cooldown. All I know are your power recharge times are greatly decreased the less weapons you carry, so if you only carry a pistol you can essentially chain powers together (spam them).

SO THIS IS TRUE! Why was this never told?!
