if only all shaft shows could be this entertaining. poko~
The new pirate girl is pretty cool!
[Ano Natsu 5-7]
Inserting characters in specifically to hurry character relationships on is an interesting contrast to the usual 'have character relationships move at an Ah! My Goddess' pace. I'm not saying it's necessarily better, but it is far more entertaining.
Persona 4 - Episode 13
Woah, new OP! Awesome.
Holy shit, this is the best filler episode ever.
yeah, the depiction of that kinda relationship in episode 5 was one of the best i've ever seenA surprisingly accurate depiction of relationships in elementary school.

Most of mangagaf is about shonen stuff exclusively, which is very different from the much more varied interests of animegaf... that ensures more conflict in the anime thread, I think. It's not like the manga one where everyone reads/watches the same stuff.I'll be honest and admit I've only skimmed a majority of the thread (because 72 pages goddamn) so it could just be a case of the grass seeming greener. The discussions and arguments do seem more fun despite if it gets heated. There certainly seems to be less vitriol. Of course my opinion could just be a little colored because of how the last couple of arguments in the manga thread have gone.
True, the majority of Mangaf is plenty happy but it just seems less fun if that makes any sense. Maybe because the group over appears to be more tightknit or something? Maybe it's probably because I had one too many sangrias to drink tonight.
You see? Those, and others frequently mentioned like Fairy Tail, are all shonens, as I said above.Well there is always plenty of HxH, TWGOK, Beelzebub, Nurarihyon no Magi, and occasionally Silver Spoon talk when those chapters are released, but I won't deny that the big 3 dominate. Especially during any down time.
I entirely agree on all points with this one, for sure. Those are definitely some very bad themes, and it is messed up how common they are. Like, even Yuru Yuri had that "dead eyes" part...My main problem with yoai is the frequent portrayal of what amounts to rape as a relationship starter, but the submissive one later realizes that it was twu wuv cause he totally wanted it and that "no" really did mean "yes."
I understand that "boys love" of the type in Natsume S3/4 is...milder, but that sure has put me off the entire genre of yoai for obvious reasons. Yuri has it's own weird homosexuals = rapists thing going on too, typically where the lesbian with the unrequited crush is psychotic. God, anime cliches are so awful.
I don't know the names of anyone who works there offhand... I assume he's the Angel Beats director though. Which else of their works had he done?KyoAni is a better studio than P.A. Works and has better directors than Seiji Kishi.
What I watched of Gintama was mostly funny (not the greatest, but amusing), but I've only watched a relatively few episodes in the series, and haven't seen much of the more serious stuff.Yep.
It usually doesn't work, but certainly can sometimes, and Angel Beats is one of the most successful examples of it I've seen.It does not and cannot work, ever.
That's just not true, not in my opinion. No lol. Angel Beats has really horrible composition, among horrible other things. It's really ugly.
But the thing with Angel Beats is, the setting provides a good explanation for why both comedy and humor are present at the same time. I did agree that the series doesn't have the best comedy ever, but it's amusing sometimes, and I definitely do think that the tone-flips work.Gintama does use tone flipping for comedic effect at times, but there's also actual tone flipping in some stories. The problem with something like Angel Beats is that the "comedy" happening in more serious situations is generally just unrelated gags, forced upon the viewer for whatever reason with exaggerated effects and such.
When Gintama does have a bit of comedy in the middle of a serious episode, it's generally just from the seemingly absurd nature of some event going on, rather than a random visual gag forced upon the viewer.
No it definitely does it within the episode and not just for comedic effect (though that is often why it's done).
Watch episode 188. It's a standalone episode that requires no knowledge of the series, but it does tone flipping extremely well and is one of the best written episodes of any anime ever IMO.

Yip yip, motherfuckers.
Keep fighting the power, Jintor. /manly tears
It may have terrible action and fights, but the slice of life and the comedy are fantastic.Stop buying terrible anime Japanese fans....ok well you can buy Horizon, just stop buying Persona.
Don't we all? Most awesome episode ever!!I really want to see Jintor's reaction to episode 15 :3
I know some of you crazy people here think this, but you are very much wrong. After the first half of episode two, you really could just skip to episode six and it would probably enhance the experience.
Thermae Romae is great and not very stupid, really. Definitely watch it! It's one of the year's best shows so far.Serious question, how is Thermae Romae? Premise seems like it could be stupid fun.
Popularity among some breeds contempt among others. You can't say that there aren't a wealth of reasons to have a cynical attitude toward Japanese otaku considering what series succeed. Everything has its haters, but it's still somewhat surprising to see some of the most-loved series of the past few years on this list, even in a completely unscientific poll.
I wasn't implying that any of the people calling these series overrated are hipsters, just that they're simply out of the norm. With there being little middle ground between success and failure for anime in the current market, it does paint a picture of a slightly more monolithic fanbase in Japan than possibly elsewhere, regardless of how true that actually is.
Continuing from the above, the only one that stands out for me on my above criteria is Steins;Gate. Was that really popular in Japan? If so I didn't know that. The rest though are exactly what I was talking about. The Japanese Internet service provider BIGLOBE posted the results of a February survey about which anime series fans consider the most overrated; this is the top 10:

Considering how few people watched it, and how great it was, it was unquestionably really underrated in my opinion. Even people who disliked it, though, can't really call it overrated, given, well, how unsuccessful it was.isnt Nichijou missing?
Bah, lists are fun. I wouldn't take them as an absolute measure of quality or something, but I have nothing against lists (except to say how hard it often is for me to rank things without making lists that are far too long... :lol This is part of why I sometimes don't even try to make lists, narrowing it down is hard.).Because lists stir up controversy, which stirs up hits and discussions, which stirs up attention for the site and ad views. That's how Internet "journalism" works.

Blood-C 5
That was a silly ending to the episode.
Blood-C 6
:lol
Though they're not exactly the same, I can see why Birdy would be compared to those other shows, on fanservice grounds most notably.Amazon isn't making me feel good about purchasing Birdy The Mighty Decode. More items to consider includes: Highschool of the Dead, Strike Witches, Sacred Blacksmith and Samurai Girls. It's enough to make me reconsider my order!
Samurai Girls and Strike Witches?Hey, two of those recommendations are good!![]()
The Sacred Blacksmith starts out awful, but improves to merely mediocre over time. Even later on though Luke is constantly having to rescue Cecily, unfortunately. The Sacred Blacksmith isn't nearly as bad as the other three in the realm of the service departments. However, the manga has a super dark turn in it that isn't in the show at all.
Slayers is probably one of my favorite anime franchises, but I don't know how much Space Pirates reminds me of it at all... they have pretty different tones. Both do have some serious and some comical elements, but the styles of both comedy and drama are pretty different. I know that the different genres are part of that, but still, Space Pirates does try to have a legitimate harder scifi element to it, so far most notably seen in the 2-5 arc. I don't know if the serious parts of Slayers are much like that at all. Genre differences are part of that, of course, but still, it's different.Bodacious Space Stowaways 08:
I may have said this before and if so I apologize, but despite not being classified as a comedy when BSP does go for laughs it gives me a very Slayers vibe. Not because the jokes are even remotely similar, but like Slayers the jokes are not about clever punchlines, but the absurdity of a situation. In just this episode we have:The major difference is that the reactions are far less pronounced between shows because BSP isn't trying to be a comedy. At least, I think it isn't. :/ Throw in a few facevaults and Dragon Slaves and this would be the real successor to Slayers that Lost Universe wishes it were.Marika having trouble convincing someone in her crew to escort the Princess to the bridge while she watches this unfold in amusement, said Princess later introducing herself as a transfer student with no hint of shyness or attempt to hide her identity, the reactions of Marika and the Princess to Misa's driving, etc.
That's not to mention how in the early episodes we had just the idea of Marika, an inexperienced commoner who works as a maid in a cafe, being thrown into the Captain's chair of a legal space pirate ship simply by virtue of being the former Captain's daughter, a shootout in a cafe with Chiaki fighting them off and dragging Marika away all while finishing off her Parfait, the bureaucracy scene when Marika chooses to take over the ship, the scenes with her changing into her pirate gear and making her way awkwardly dodging random boxes etc. just to get to the bridge, the soothsayer like character on the bridge who keeps saying "I can see it," but doesn't offer what she's seeing like, ever, etc. Just the very bizarre situations set up for humorous purposes, but no punchline. All it's missing is the facevaults. And the Dragon Slaves. ^^;

Sailor Jupiter!
And yep, I think I like the derpiness of the main heroine. She's too much like Usagi for me not to like her ditziness/stupidity. I might actually be all in for this show.

CURE MARCH AWWWWWWW YEAHHHHHHHHHHH.
Peace is still the HNNNNNNNGest, but March is the total package and is easily best Cure. Badass? Check. Oneesama? Check. Tall, green, and kinda masculine like Sailor Jupiter? Check. Has an especially awesome power? Check. Wears military fatigues and short shorts as casual wear? That's one big Check.

Cure March is a poor man's Cure Sunshine.
Cure March is a poor man's Cure Sunshine.
Didn't you watch Madoka with the rest of AnimeGAF?My last Magical Girl Knight show was Sailor Moon, so what the hell?
In the arena of tomboys with magickal powers, Cure Sunshine is the best. But that's yellow and not green, and thus inferior.
Me too. He was surprised to find that the show is actually funny.
Didn't you watch Madoka with the rest of AnimeGAF?
Of course, it is more like Evangelion than either of those two.ah! Madoka! But for some reason I wouldn't put Madoka in the same genre as Sailor Moon or Pretty Cure.
