Words cannot portray how fucking excited I am. I've been wanting an iPad for like 8 months but decided I should wait for the next version. Been checking rumours like a maniac. This will be glorious. That screen..fuck.
I can't really agree with that. I think the market for ipads would allow a price increase without much drop in sales. A $50 increase wouldn't give most folks a reason to pause, yet mean a fuckload more money for apple.
Is the retina display really that breath taking that it consciously makes the device nicer to use, or is it more of a "neat" thing that you end up forgetting about in a matter of hours and has no real practicality apart from more details when you get close to the screen?
I mean, I'm happy that Apple pushes for higher resolutions and better screens, but considering that the retina display seems to be the biggest selling point of the next iPad, it makes me kinda shrug because to me that doesn't seem really important. Than again, I haven't really witnessed an iPhone 4S from close-by, so perhaps I'm missing something here.
this is not a troll! I'm aware how touchy touchy Apple discussions are

I can't even imagine what other improvement could be as significant or dramatic a change than quadrupling the pixel count. It's the type of screen that will make every single other screen looks absolutely horrible after you get used to it. Trust me, it's what happened after I got the iPhone 4. And with a 9.7" screen, the effect will be that much greater.
If you want to remember how shitty things used to look pre-retina on your iPhone, just go to the secondapps web app and take a gander at the buttons to "Reply" or add a URL or whatever. They look insanely terrible. That's how EVERYTHING used to look.

I got my iPad 2 at launch after having my iPhone 4 since, well, its launch, and it was actually a little bit disappointing to go back to 'lower-res' versions of all the typical iOS features.
its a vibrant screen thats great for photos but I see the aliasing on text on tons of webpages and find it frustrating. it is not subtle to my eyes at all and detracts from reading lots of pages if they choose certain serif fonts.
fixing this with a higher res screen will make it much better for text display.
The sharpness for pictures and graphics will also be very nice.
Anyone who really cares about IQ and technology will take one look at the ipad 3 screen and immediately throw their existing iPad against the wall, then out the window, then light it on fire and then flush the remains down the toilet.

went white last time. I didnt mind it but Ill be reverting to black for the new one.
(i have a white iPhone 4s and like it so much i might just stick with white for the phones for a long time - assuming they dont just switch to aluminum again)
The only bad thing that comes with a resolution jump is developers taking their time upgrading their apps to support it. This is the biggest first-world problem in the world, but damn those low-res icons on my iPhone 4 home screen bothered me for a while. I think I might STILL have some.

I hope developers are quick to update their apps considering this retina iPad has been heavily rumored for like 18 months now. They've had tons of time to prepare.
In fact, after watching that video and then reading their invitation again I've kinda convinced myself already.
There's no reason why they'd phrase it like that unless they were talking about a new iPod Touch to be unveiled as well, but that doesn't really make sense. And while Jobs talked about 'touching your music' and 'touching the internet' as a really special thing with the iPhone and iPad reveals, that's totally commonplace now and not worth mentioning unless there's been a significant step forward in that area.
I'm actually more curious about how they price the product line than spec details, though. There seem to have been some inroads of legitimate budget tablets (e.g. Kindle Fire) since last year, so it'll be interesting to see if/how they respond.

You might be right, but did they really need to say that at the end? It sounds so specific, and just touching stuff is nothing special anymore. I mean, everyone knows it's an iPad event, and everyone knows that it's a touch device. Something new is gonna happen with 'touch', I can FEEL it.

You're setting yourself up for massive disappointment. It's a new touch enabled device with an amazing screen, the invitation doesn't imply anything about haptic feedback.

I disagree. To me, the invitation is implying something different about touch. I could understand if this was first or second gen, where capacitive multi-touch was still a novelty, but making a reference to the same 'touch' on a third gen product (particularly when the entire industry is already on board with touch interfaces) strikes me as odd.
