GAF Plays: Mass Effect series (unmarked spoilers)

2 questions:

Did the Cerberus Network add more dialogue or something? I downloaded it the other day and I swear a few characters Samara for example had a shitload more dialogue. I'm pretty sure I didn't skip any conversations but it seemed liked I was learning a lot more.

And on the topic of the Cerberus Network there were little news tidbits each day talking about Batarians, claiming the Alliance attacked them. Is this build up for ME3 and if so can anyone post the one that went up today? My live account lapsed and can't access it without it. (Stupid)

It's for ME3. Read them all here (unofficial mirror site).

Oh, apparently, Bioware created a game-breaking glitch if I save and leave the game during a DLC mission (Shadow Broker for this case), then my file becomes unknown, and I am unable to access it.

I'm sure glad I didn't lose a good number of hours and $12 worth of DLC, so it could become invalid....Fuck Bioware and their incompetent. Never had such a problem with a PC game before.

Well that blows.

Sorry your money was wasted.

What? I saved plenty of times during Shadow Broker or other DLCs in ME2 PC, never heard of something like that.

Tried loading the automatic save? Or the "restart mission" save to do the mission again?

Getting ready for ME3, I downloaded and finished Overlord. I really liked it! Creepy atmosphere, some exploration and an interesting storyline.

Now I gotta do Shadow Broker.

I know I'm properly late to the party of this thread, but I haven't owned a copy of Mass Effect since losing access to a 360. I loved Mass Effect 1 unabashedly, it was the reason I first bought the console.

So, I decided to double dip and get dat Steam purchase. Fooled around with the graphics and started. SWEET SPACE JESUS does it look beautiful on a computer! I thought I loved the Mako sections on a console, I cannot WAIT to see them now! I was really just blown away by the picture quality, the colors are so wonderfully vibrant.

My only problem is getting used to the interface, not exactly ME's strong suit, but without a controller it seems even worse.

Playing with FemShep for the first time and I'm really enjoying her dialog delivery. Figured after five playthroughs of MaleShep it was time for a change, and I'm glad I did.

Finally finished my ME2 run and The Arrival yesterday. The Arrival was fun... but the whole murdering half a million people didn't gel too well with me. But I'm guessing that's why they made them batarians. Nobody likes them.

I'm sitting here watching my little brother play ME2 for the first time....I had no idea Liara could be in the opening scene where the Normandy gets destroyed.

That's cool, can't wait to see how different his experience is compared to mine.

Edit: Just finished my "perfect" playthrough in ME2. Everyone survived, DLC finished and all assignments completed. Even got my Spectre status back. My body is ready.

When the entire crew of the Normandy SR-2 is getting captured right when the entire main team has to go away in a shuttle, what exactly are they going away to do?

I didn't know anyone else could appear there.

I didn't know anyone else could appear there.

1) They were trying to test the IFF. Now why did they have to pick all their talented squadmates is pretty much...a stupid idea from Bioware so that Shepard could have another reason to hurry the fuck up.

2) Who appears at the beginning of ME2 in the Normandy should be the one you romanced in ME1. If you didnt romanced anyone, or if its a new fresh start, im guessing they just pick Kaidan if you're playing femshep and Ashley if you're playing maleshep.

Gonna finish ME1 today, finally.

Won't have much time this weekend - how long was ME2 again, with all sidequests and the full codex (= selecting every dialogue option, collecting all the loot)?

I'm sitting at around 21 hours on my new ME2 play through, and thats skipping a fair amount of dialog. Finished the main story, just have overlord, firestarter, and Shadow Broker to do. I played on normal as a Sentinel, and damn they can soak up damage. The husk levels were just dumb, I'd just go stand in the middle of as many as possible and let my shield blow them all up, then immediately put up the shield again.

I'm usually not that kind of guy who starts nitpicking at sci-fi stuff but at the end of ME2 you got about three scenes where you can look directly into open space while neither shepard nor one of the crew is wearing a helmet. I mean if those breathing masks hadn't already been ridiculous enough...

Maybe this is even the reason why they didn't let you visit any real hostile planets. In ME1 you went several times to moons or other places without any kind of atmosphere or just hostile environment. If you had seen Miranda standing on the moon, wearing nothing but a mask, people would have realized that there's something wrong.
I hope they bring back those Spacewalks for ME3, but since I've already seen that they kept the masks, I fear they wont.

They could be using a small mass effect field to maintain an atmosphere around each person.

You know what would have fixed the reload heat sink mechanic, from a lore perspective for me? If the gun would have overheated, like in Mass Effect, but you would have the option to swap out heat sinks or let it cool naturally. It would have made more sense. The swappable heat sink technology they added to ever weapon in the galaxy would have actually been beneficial instead of losing the virtually unlimited ammunition benefit. I'd imagine it working similarly to the battery mechanic in Alan Wake. As you use the flashlight it drains the power but it will automatically refill overtime but in emergency situations, when you can't wait for the slow recharge, you can slap in a new battery.

Did they ever fix the framerate issues with ME1 for X360? I've attempted to play through it a couple of times but it just annoys me too much.

They're a little better if you do an install to the harddrive, but it's still bad. You might turn off motion blur and film grain and see if that helps at all. I've always played with them off, so I don't know how significant of a difference it will make.

I'd pay $40 for a "remastered" ME1 on the 360. I know I can play a great version on PC but I'd love to have a flawless trilogy on 360 and the original is just so poor technically.

you could use advance training and get Zaeed Fire Grenade.

I spammed Area Shockwave for the husks and Incinerate Blast on Mordin so it wasn't too bad but ugh, that mission was just tedious. Especially at the Reaper Core section at the end.

I'd pay double that for the same game on PS3 :( I want to play ME1 again but I just don't have my 360 hooked up any more.

The publishing nightmare it could create between EA and Microsoft would probably prevent this, if only for Microsoft to continue to ensure it doesn't get a release on the PS3.

Kelly is... interesting to talk to. I didn't know you could get her opinion after each recruitment mission since on my first playthrough I think I got locked out her conversations by telling her to be more formal. Decided to be nicer this time around.

I actually like Jacob's character but, man, its a pain to talk to him in his initial conversations. Almost every dialogue option sounds flirty. Its so cringeworthy.

Did you know that you could get her to stripper dance for you?

I thought it was just implied when she said she had an outfit she wanted to show you. I didn't know until I had finished the game and was preparing to do Arrival that I saw there was an option in you quarters to call her up. Man, what a weird thing to have in the game.

Agreed. I just stick to picking the middle response whenever talking to him. My poor FemShep doesn't have a LI in any of the games though, I may have to change that with ME3.

I just pretty much avoided talking to any male LI because it felt like you either told them that you wanted to jump them right there, right now or you were telling them to fuck off.

Garrus is still worth it for the awkward scenes.

Automatic saves are corrupted, along with the 'restart mission' save. Nothing will work. :-(

I decided to simply download a save that reflects my own save (for the most part).

I was furious last night, but now I'm fine. I'll get through that content with my Renegade Shepard in due time. Now, I can enjoy Witcher II while waiting for Mass Effect 3.

Didn't bother me. You have to do something similar in a side quest (not to that magnitude, of course), how come nobody complains about that?

And which assignment would that be?

Pretty sure he is talking about that N7 mission where you either launch a nuclear missile on a factory or a city. But that doesn't even compare since you don't have any sort of consequences or even cutscenes to make it more dramatic, unlike the Arrival.

That and very very few people die in that mission.

I may go into ME3 without an LI. The ones I want are unavailable with FemShep and the Garrus one was too awkward to go through again. I didn't think his romance path was going to go straight to the sex talk.

So it's okay for the game to "make choices for you" in a side quest that isn't a significant part of the mainline story?

I'm asking because I thought people had issue with the supposed "lack of control", not the actual event itself.

Mass Effect has been making choices for you since it existed. Arrival is no different. It's the narrative.
