Macross Plus OST - Voices

I have to say, I was pretty blown away with how much I ended up loving this. The production values were great, the score was excellent, and the overall look and feel of the world and its characters were right up my alley.

I like these more "down to earth" takes on flight and mechs. It definitely leaves orbit, literally and figuratively, a couple of times, but it's not enough to really ruin the gravity of what they're trying to accomplish. You really get the sense that the people that worked on this project were just as passionate about flight as the characters they were portraying.

The main character, Isamu (well, it really depends, since Myung and Guld both got a large amount of focus and screentime, but for my sake we'll say Isamu) was kind of an on-the-fence for me. I really loved him when he was in the cockpit, because his pure joy of flying and arrogant behavior was great, but he was too unlikeable for the longest time because they pushed it too hard. Guld was probably the most well balanced, but the stupid point near the end where
he realizes he repressed his memories
felt really badly implemented. Pretty unecessary too. Just bleh. Myung was a pretty nice character to parallel the events of the test-pilot's dealing with becoming irrelevant, losing purpose, and so forth. I wish they hadn't made her such a "help me!" character so much, because when she decided to be strong, she was pretty cool.

I'm sort of kicking around whether or not each of them was supposed to represent physical, mental, and spiritual (or an id, ego, superego), but I think I'll need to reflect on it a bit longer before going into it as a full blown examination. Right now I have Isamu as physical, since he goes for a very sensory driven existence of needing immediate gratification through flight, not caring about the music at the concert, following impulses, the very traditional piloting controls his craft has, and acting without considering others and consequences. Guld would be mental, as evidenced by both his way of flying, internal struggles against his race's aggressive nature,
repressing his memories
, and so forth. Myung would be the spiritual, as evidenced by the way in which the music is targeting specific feelings, her internal conflict with her emotions, dealing with loss of dreams,
the way she interfaces with Sharon
, and such. Like I said, I'm not really at a point where I feel comfortable outside of that, but it's sort of my impression with how the three were presented.

I felt Yoko Kanno really did an excellent job on the score, and the flying scenes were elevated with the spirit and energy of the music. It managed to capture that romantic feeling of flight and just give it a great feel that really mirrored Isamu's love of piloting. There were a few instances where the music didn't feel it quite matched the tone of the imagery on screen, but I still couldn't hold it against it because it was so nice.

One thing they managed to do that really impressed me was giving their cities and locations with large numbers of people the sense of actually being heavily populated. Every background character seemed unique, tons of details, and just had that early 90s view of the future executed in a way that felt totally believable. I don't know who is truly responsible for the attention to these details (I would like to think Watanabe, since I was getting some serious flashbacks to watching Bebop), but they managed to convince me wholly on the setting.

The only things that I really didn't like about Macross Plus were SPOILERS
Guld's repression of memories, Guld's death being glanced over so quickly, no real resolution with the General/Ghost craft/Millard, no catharsis for Guld/Isamu/Myung outside of the few bits and pieces in the last ten minutes, and not really giving a good motivation/direction for Sharon. Guld's memory stuff just felt really tacked on and unecessary. Surely, there could have been a better way of handling something like that or just writing a different scenario. It didn't really contribute anything to the story outside of a reason to split the three up back in the day. Guld's death was dramatic for about three seconds and then quickly forgotten in the midst of the climax. It was really sad to see one of the major characters just completely dropped like that. What were the consequences of this last chapter with the higher ups? What about Isamu running off? What about anything? They just left everything so loose that it's a little disappointing. I'm not saying I want everything tied up all the time with a nice bow (though this paragraph certainly sounds that way), but they could have done something with another ten minutes to conclude better. They tried to give Sharon a reason for doing what she was doing, but it was just super weak. Yeah, okay, you're trying to make Isamu feel alive/good by putting him in danger. Just could have been something more, but I digress.

Overall, I really, really loved Macross Plus. It's kind of funny to see hints of things to come in some of Watanabe's later works (I know he was just co-director, but the pieces are there).

What the hell!?

Knight in the Area is now a women's football anime? And no one says anything?

dat german mädel!

"Eraport"... mhhh... it looks like she plays for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Well, that's what I get for falling behind. >_< It's been a turbulent couple of weeks for me.

P4: 14

That was a riot. I didn't expect to structure the summer like that. Dat nurse. Yu's swag knows no bounds.

The knight in the area 9

As Seven played some soccer in this episode, I felt a mix of annoyance at the way the plays were presented as well as some enjoyment of the
omg she's so cool so dribbles every person on the opposing team like She's Maradona Baggio and Pelé rolled into 1
, though the annoyance won out. For a show that seems to give half a crap about a semblance of reality in its presentation of soccer, there should be a little more restraint imho.

Great choice, Macross Plus is sooooo good. The movie (which isn't as good) expands on the Guld/Ghost dogfight some.
I'm with you on thinking it wasn't handled too well. Guld sacrifices himself then let's just forget about it!

It expands on some other stuff too listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macross_Plus#Macross_Plus:_Movie_Edition

IF YOU'RE NOT WATCHING MACROSS PLUS MOVIE VERSION YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG

this has been a public service announcement. friends don't let friends watch inferior macross OVAs.

Yeah, it didn't ruin the ova, but it just felt like they really, really dropped the ball. Which, it's kind of odd, considering how well they had been balancing most of the characters up to that point.

Typographenia, you're making me feel bad for watching all this derivative shit. Watch something airing already!
I'm watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Rinne no Lagrange. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!
Wan~
edit: OH YES IT DID

IF YOU'RE NOT WATCHING MACROSS PLUS MOVIE VERSION YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG
I might need to look into that, if only because I wouldn't mind seeing more of this universe.

Yeah, I wanted to reword that, but I was too late and wanted to forget about it entirely.

Persona 4: 21
tumblr_m08e71Iepw1qjricxo1_500.gif

Well this more than made up for all the fillery episodes, so dramatic, intense, and kept me on the edge of my seat and emotional.
Naoto is really the star for the show all around, the drama, the voice, and the passion and intensity, I could feel it all. Not a nanako fan but why did it have to be hear, Yu got so emotional over it and when he screamed I had tears. Even more when Dojima, terrible character, but if he dies and leaves Nanako alone, I wont be able to stand it. Why did this show have to take such a tragic turn, Im not prepared for this.

I was a huge fan of Macross Plus back in the day. I still love the music from it. Information High and Idol Talk.

Fun fact about Idol Talk: it has sound clips from porn videos in it. If you listen closely, you can hear them.
"Can you feel my juices around your rock hard cock?"
and
"Take a closer look. Mmm, Very nice."

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai 09
A little bland episode. Besides the first chunk of scarring Maria for life or something, it was a simple visit to Sena's house and getting her father's seal of approval. I did like the introduction of her father and butler which was pretty funny characters, and I liked that they showed the aftermath of Sena and Kobato's bonding time instead of doing a fanservice moment, even though they did do something like that afterwards, but whatever.

Hahaha, that's fantastic!

There was one song they used once or twice in the first or second episode that kept making me think it was going to bust into Down In It. I think it was the drums, but I kept expecting Trent Reznor's voice to fade in at any second.

Persona 4 - 21

Nanako!!!! That hit me hard, especially with Yu/Dojima at the end and then the ending theme kicking in.

So stoked for next week!

Knight in the Area 9

Its difficult to believe, unless its normal practice, that an American team would go all the way to JPN to play a "friendly" match of soccer, as well as all players being JPN/ENG speakers, they could have stayed speaking ENG.

But fun match.

This is a show where some dude can lose like 100 pounds or whatever in a week, so yeah. :p

Has anyone here watched Monster?

Any votes for or against the series?

I watched the entire series fairly recently, and I enjoyed it. It's not a very action packed show, but if you get into the characters and the story it'll keep you engaged throughout.

Pacing is a bit of an issue, as it did go on a bit too long, IMO. I found it pretty fascinating, overall, though.

I'd say, give it about 10 or so episodes. If you're not into it at that point, then you probably won't be later on.

Football teams go to distant countries to play friendly matches when it's off-season, yeah.

Me too. Bad pacing + really dumb + takes itself too seriously = barf.
My biggest complaint was the utter lack of decent characters or anyone for the audience to really like (
because, let's face it, the main cast is pretty abysmal, outside of Detective Lunge and Grimmer
). I could have forgiven much in the way of pacing and story problems if there were some decent characters to make me feel like I wasn't wasting my time. Not to mention
there is pretty much no gravity to any of Johan because we either just hear tons and tons of "well, one time he did X" or the things he actually does are so basic that it makes you wonder why he has the reputation he does.

My main problem is that the story is really really dumb and Johan is like some sort of magical supervillain that deflates any sort of tension the story may have.

Key stupidity offender:
that fucking Johan-crossdressing-as-Nina subplot. Jesus christ, what a stupid set of episodes.

Diebuster 2

v0Rpz.jpg

I don't see how we can have this discussion without defining what moe is.

I think it's about time that I accept that Diebuster isn't about people. Not really. It's about the future and big robots and crazy things going down.

Fortunately, despite some dated CG, it looks really damn good. I love the space station. I love the way the control room looks. I love Lal'C's little dog spacesuit.

WnJiE.jpg

In the future, all things must be moe.

I'd be surprised if I end up liking this more than Gunbuster. These episodes are more exciting than Gunbuster's early going, but there's not a lot of groundwork laid for me to care about any person here. So I might go "Fuck yeah!" when badass shit goes down at the end, but I doubt it'll bring tears to my eyes.

AZuPm.jpg

This is a pretty awesome burst of action.

Also, it's weird that they drop the reveal that
Nono is a robot
in such an offhanded way, like it was figured out between episodes. Unless that later turns out to be untrue, it seems like it'd be an important thing to fully explore.

It's amazing that even after watching gunbuster like, 20 times, the ending still makes me tear up. ;(

also NEW SCIENCE LESSON OMAKE ON THE BLURAY HOLY CRAP

iOS replaces mock '87 macintosh interface lol

There are many things in life that are weird, one of them is meeting an up and coming Seiyuu who's voice I kinda recognized from a recently watched show
Papa No Iukoto Wo Kikinasai
, at a friends party in Tokyo. Once she showed me on TV, I had a proper Waynes World "We're not worthy!" moment. :D

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai 10
It is the fourth beach/swimsuit episode, even they don't care anymore.
Well after this episode, I would say, it would take something huge like Sena being demon queen that murders orphaned magical girls or something for me to like her any less than Yozora. I actually kinda want Yozora to get friend zoned whenever this sudden revelation of her past occurs.
And, lol at Rika going EXCALIBUR!

Pretty much my assessment. Sena >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Yozora

Hotarubi no Mori e

Take the kind of human-youkai tale that Natsume excels at, expand it a bit, remove the framing device of Natsume, and this is what you get. As you might imagine, it's quite good. The direction is superb and sensitive, the art is gorgeous, and the musical cues perfectly integrated into the narrative. It all combines to create the evocative atmosphere this sort of fairy tale needs to come off successfully.

The main theme of this story is touch, or the lack thereof, and the visual storytelling does a good job of portraying it.
After so many failed attempts at establishing contact, the climax was gratifyingly bittersweet. We are not told how long Gin lives his solitary life in the forest. For it is solitary - even though the other youkai interact with and clearly like Gin, he carefully keeps his distance from them, probably since he never feels fully comfortable in their society as one who was originally human. At any rate, Hotaru is the first person he has been able to connect with on a meaningful level, yet she is also a person he can never bond with in true intimacy thanks to his cursed body. So he willingly abandons himself, touching a boy he must have known to be human to give him the excuse he needs to embrace her for the first and final time. Love-death at its finest.

As a side point, the mask that human-like youkai wear was put to better use here than anything I've seen in Natsume.

Now even though this got a theatrical release, the animation and length aren't quite up to movie standards - more like a bit above the high end of Natsume's TV production values. But it's effective and I can't imagine this story being any longer than it is, so there's very little I would complain about.

G Gundam 11

Poor Rain. Domon handled that shit like a man though.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica 5

Food chain? Rules? This is getting more intriguing and Homura is coming across as even more badass. Loved the scene where she appeared at the end with her reflection in the water droplets.

Masou Kishin Cybuster 2

I know it's only two episodes in but I'd like for something to actually happen. Another ep of picking up trash, Ken being put in awkward situations, and Cybuster mysteriously walking around like a hardass.

Gundam 00 S2 1

I should get finally get to this after an aborted attempt a couple years back. I really don't remember much of what I saw then so it's like going in fresh. That said, first episode was great. Metal Gear Setsuna was fun to watch and this Mr. Bushido looks mysterious and entirely unindentifiable beneath that mask. Surely this level of awesome will persist throughout the rest of the season, right? ... right?

Black★Rock Shooter TV 5

What in the shit did I just watch? Why is everyone getting crazier?
