yeah. complaining the reveal of a product was "spoiled" is taking it a little too far in my opinion.

The iPhone was introduced in MacWorld 2007

So I noticed a lot of people say they pretty much only use their iPad's in portrait mode. Since I've had mine, I only use it in landscape. Hm...I'll have to give the opposite a try with the 3.

Whats gonna happen to the mags on newsstand? Its already 300 megs for some mags already. Will that balloon to a GB when the RetinaPad launches?

It obviously depends on what you do, which games and apps you use, etc.

I just like the book-like format for long form reading. Well that is until the new neogaf site stopped fitting to the screen width on first load.

I tend to hold the iPad with one hand, and in landscape there's more torque, as the centre of mass is further from my hand.

When I had an iPad I mostly used it in portrait. With my Android tablet I mostly use it in landscape because of the screen ratio. I think 4:3 is a lot more portrait friendly.

Why do you have to wait for the iPad 3 to try it in portrait if you already have an iPad?

I never, ever use portrait. Landscape all the way. Landscape is much more enjoyable to me. Especially when I use it for mostly web browsing, RSS feeds. It's nice to browse GAF in landscape.

Just watched that "iPad 3 assembled" video with the amazing 80's music. Kind of sucks seeing that the leaks are getting so organized now that you can literally assemble all the pieces into a fully representative shell.

Wonder what it's like being an iPad piece smuggler. Like is the money good? Does Apple do more than just fire people if they find out (like sue?).

Meh...the internals are going to be more important than the externals naturally (as long as it doesn't magically weigh like a pound more or feel worse in your hand) but it's still shitty.

Where is this video at?

I still don't feel that the transition from each mode is seamless enough, even after all these years. I usually just lock my iOS device in portrait and then unlock in the rare instance I need landscape mode. I know I used to use landscape more often, but too many apps just didn't support it.

I expect as much. Storage is going to be a real problem if Apple sticks with 16GB at the lowest end (or perhaps drops to 8GB for a lowend iPad 2). There are already have iBooks Textbooks over 2GBs :O. Many universal apps will increase in size too and developers might struggle to create apps smaller than the 20 MB limit for downloads over cellular networks. Perhaps Publishers will read the writing on the wall and switch their magazine apps from the image heavy production in popular use right now but I doubt it.

Which craigslist section do people use? Can't decide between computers or electronics. There seem to be listings in both.

Everything I've read about Jobs leaving a purported 4 or 10 year product plan for Cook appears to be little more than conjecture. Unnamed sources after unnamed sources leaving all sorts of tidbits that will likely never be verified.

Might I remind you that it was Jobs that trained and ultimately recommended Cook to the board for the position of CEO. If Cook messes up as you claim he is, it's still on Jobs' shoulders. If Apple fails in the near future, it will be because Jobs was unsuccessful at building a company that could continue his vision and legacy.

Had an iPhone before, but this will be my first iPad. What are initial stock levels usually like in the UK? If I want one on launch day will I need to preorder or can I just walk into a shop and pick one up?

It's useless to try with him, he is arguing it was all Cook for iPad 3 despite the fact it went into mass production just two months after Jobs died. iPad 3 was designed and specs locked down very likely before Jobs stepped down as CEO.

It's like trying to talk to a brick wall with him.

You are discounting the possible notion that everyone in this thread is slowly warming up to.
Fridge = Jobs

Except later on you'll claim that a brick wall doesn't even exist, and is whatever we want it to be. Far out, man.

@ivedoneyourmom - Jobs' legacy shouldn't be tarnished much, much in the same way that Gates' legacy at Microsoft hasn't suffered in spite of Ballmer's tenure. And it seems to me highly probable that a company like Apple could only succeed as they have over the last few years with a visionary like Jobs at helm. What that constitutes I can't say. But there are no other parallels to draw analogies to.

Refrigerator and Marty Chinn should be best friends.
Is it because he, like me, is an astute observer of the intersect between between technology and liberal arts and how that affects the human condition?

I honestly think Apple will fair far off better with Cook than Microsoft with Balmer. Jobs greatest creation is Apple itself. There is a culture there that is far stronger than anything Microsoft had attempted to create. That's probably why Cook spent so much time at the iPhone 4S conference talking about his love for Apple.

so which blog feeds are you guys using on Wednesday? Who generally has the best coverage?

I think I am going to give The Verge a try, plus watching people's heads explode on twitter.

Refrigerator: Culpability of a CEO works like this: There is a period of time where it is on person that did the recommendation, then a period on the CEO for making boneheaded decisions, and then eventually falls on the board for being irresponsible for not ousting the CEO before too much damage has been done. If Tim Cook runs the half a trillion dollar Apple with its 100 billion dollar war-chest into the ground over the next year*, Jobs is going to get the blame for giving an incompetent buffoon that much responsibility - end of story.

*He won't, in fact it's very possible that he will be a better CEO than Jobs, maybe not as charismatic - but that's not the only quality needed in being a good leader.

It should go in the magical items category, obviously.

Haha, clearly the most accurate sub category

Anyway, wow at the prices people are asking for these things. I guess it's a good strategy if you want to haggle, but I'm more interested in getting cash ASAP. Listed iPad 2 32GB 3G with a minor scratch and scuffed back for 500 and I'm already setting up a meet. Quick and easy. I could get a little more, but I prefer to do as little dealing as possible with people from CL.

Gonna be a crappy few days/week/whatever without an iPad. Here's hoping for a release this Friday I guess!

Edit: Leo Laporte and co will be doing live coverage on the TWiT network on Wednesday and probably skyping Jason Snell of MacWorld from the demo room. I'll definitely have that on while following the live blogs.

You're only options are pre-ordering, if Apple offers it, or if they don't then the only way you're getting one on launch day is by waiting in line overnight.

In the UK, I know www.krcs.co.uk are taking pre-orders, and I'm sure Currys/Dixons will be too, although there was confusion at Currys last year when people who'd pre-ordered went to pick theirs up only to find they'd sold them to the ones who queued. Whoops.

I'll be in the Apple Store Meadowhall queue like an idiot.

So this is the first time I may wait in line for an Apple product and I live closest to the Pasadena store.

Am I really going to have to overnight it in line if I want one? I'm not that desperate for one but I'd like to wait at most 5-6 hours.

No, just be a cool person, sleep well and go when all those people are gone, claiming yours like a boss.

Thanks. If it's anything like the iPad 2 it's sold in quite a few stores over here so hopefully at least one of them should allow preordering.

It should go in the magical items category, obviously.

It should only be Magical with a 300PPI, glass laminated display. Color calibrated and, dare to dream, 500 nits combined with a >1,400:1 contrast ratio. Otherwise appliances. Perhaps next to a refrigerator?

Cook better not disappoint.

I wonder how long before Apple switches display technologies. And if it will be Crystal LED, OLED, or some other form of a screen. Other then resolution I'm sure this screen will disappoint in terms of black levels and overall contrast. Resolution will keep it beautiful for awhile, but at some point they are going to have to switch to something else then an IPS LCD.

If you want to only wait that long, maybe at the 7-8 hour mark you can do a Twitter search or something and check the lines everywhere. There are like 5-6 Apple Stores within 30 minutes of the Pasadena location.

Yeah, the black levels on iPhone/iPad are atrocious, doesn't help when you've got a solid black border around the screen. They will have to make a switch sometime, now with Super AMOLED Plus screens that have the same res/dpi as the retina display on the iPhone, I think they might for the next iteration.

Really hoping for that LCD-glass lamination also. Creating the illusion that the image is actually lying on the surface, and not just below it, is simply a no-brainer to have in such a high-quality touch screen. If they skip it, it'll have to be due to technical difficulties, rather than some design/ease-of-repairability choice.

And that's what I alluded to above - the closeness of the screen to the glass - and how Apple seemingly removing that separation - made a world of difference between the using iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Hopefully that tech is brought over to the iPad 3 as well.
Fridge, while you're completely wrong on what constitutes a retina display, I totally agree with you here. Using my wife's iPhone 4 and then my iPad 2 definitely made me want the same screen tech to be used for iPad 3. Subconsciously removing the extra "layer" from the LCD makes a world of difference. If this is implemented for iPad 3 (along with the obvious resolution increase), the screen is going to look amazing.

I honestly don't care about LTE or Siri. All I'm looking for is the retina display, the same screen lamination tech from iPhone, same battery life as iPad 2 with increased processing power.
Yeah I agree, I think the optical lamination was just as important as the resolution bump with the iPhone 4. If Apple can pull this off for iPad 3, I will be very impressed.

Screen lamination ain't happening with the iPad 3, sorry to say. People had to look at it under a microscope to see the difference - it looks like the same part when it's not plugged into the machine.

And that's a pity, because the pixels-on-glass look of the iPhone 4/4S display is nearly as important as the crazy-high resolution. It's great to feel like you're touching the pixels themselves, and not a thin layer of glass on top of the pixels.

Betcha that'll wait for the iPad 4 and Gorilla Glass 2.

Really interested to see what additional apps are included with the new Apple TV.

HBO Go is a must for me.

I really want an amazon prime streaming app. Im still shocked there isnt one for anything really. Why the hell isnt there a Prime App, or Prime on my 360/ps3?
