GAF Plays: Mass Effect series (unmarked spoilers)

Just finished up Overlord. While I'm not a huge fan of the Hammerhead (or maybe it's just the PC controls for it that don't agree with me), it was overall a great piece of content IMO. I thought the Kasumi DLC felt a tad short for the $7 price, but this one was just the right length. I did think bringing along Legion would figure a bit more prominently beyond a brief mention by the doctor though. Oddly enough, the game kept crashing before entering the Prometheus Station whenever I had Legion in my party. Could be a lot of reasons for that, but I wonder if there was some specific script with him aboard that Geth ship that was originally planned and then yanked out. Who knows.

Anyways, just got the Arrival to finish up now. All the impressions of it tell me not to expect much, but hope it at least ends strongly.

This ME 2 play through has been rough. I'm getting a lot of crashes to the desktop. I've never had these issues with previous play throughs. There's not a lot of information out there about periodic crashes so, I sure it's something specific with my setup.

If you're on a Steam installation, check the file integrity. It's often something to do with the game install itself, rather than a system error (in my experience).

So I'm not far into Mass Effect, Shepard just became a Spectre and I recruited a new party member.

What's the best team comp? Garrus keeps dying.

The teams I've used:

Wrex and Liara
Wrex and Garrus
Tali and Ashley
Kaiden and Garrus
Kaiden and Ashley
Wrex and Kaiden

But you should also be open to switching. For instance, on Noveria and Feros, it's almost better to go with a more Biotic based team. For Virmire and the Liara mission, go more Tech based.

Trying to finish the Overlord DLC on my new PC before ME3 comes out but the damn game keeps crashing for seemingly random reasons. Never had this issue on my laptop... :/

I have the physical copy, unfortunately. The one new piece to the installation I didn't have before is Arrival but I didn't have any specific issues with that content when I went back to an earlier Shepard I had to incorporate the DLC for that career.

Sounds familiar. I've had 4 crashes today. It's infuriating. What the hell?

My broteam

Got bored of my squadmates' personal problems after Jacob's daddy issues and Grunt's puberty, so I decided to pick up Tali and, against my better judgment, get the Collector Ship over with sooner rather than later.

But at least I have the Widow now.

Edit: Holy shit, fuck the platform part of the area. This part is a nightmare thanks to squad mates not taking cover and Harbinger's dickery. I swear to god, I wish you could get the option for Shepard to firmly plant his/her foot deep in the Illusive Man's ass for sending you to this place.

I really hate the Vehicle DLC mission. Why you can't save on the vehicle is beyond me...

It's also fun to read that the Normandy 2 uses shuttles because it can't enter an atmosphere like the old Normandy...
Nice how there is no consistency whatsoever in ME2. Also: hammerhead is such a piece of shit compared to the Mako. And to think it's just sitting there, encased in ice, but otherwise in perfect condition. Was it really that hard to just pick it up?
Oh well. Bygones and all that...

It's fun to play the DLC after completing the suicide mission with a paragon character. " I QUIT, YOU BASTARD!" *moments later* "oh hey, could you help me out with that info? Thanks man.
So basically the "correct" playing order is: all DLC except Arrival > suicide mission > Arrival, right?

Also: taking Legion along on other missions is hilarious. Reegar's response (and quarians in general) in particular.

I had lot of trouble at this part too. The main problem I found was the black orb thing knocks you out of cover when it hits and that's where you get screwed. To stop this, just go out of cover a moment before it hits, and then instead of being knocked back you can just go back into cover, sometimes with your shield intact.

I finished the game on Insane the other day, I must say it wasn't too difficult. That part and the Arrival DLC were the only places that gave me trouble. I was an Infiltrator, with Garrus and Miranda most of the time but I used Legion for the suicide mission, his attack bot and having 3x snipers made it an utter cake walk. You get so strong by the end it's ridiculous.

Provided you have the room to do so, you could also just move left 'n right, back 'n forth, while staying in cover. The Singularity-lookin' attack's attempt to track your movement usually leads it well off track, flying over and past you.

MechaX, you always, always have to manually get your squadmates to cover on the higher difficulties. Also, if you haven't done it already, re-speccin' your Bonus Power to Warp Ammo would really help.

Just finished up ME1, unlocked some hard to get / slow to get achievements on the way, 3rd time i've beat the game now, or 4th I forget.

Ashley dead, saved the council, spoke to the fan, gave a paragon news report, my body is ready for ME2 (2nd run, this time with my shep carried over)

This hurts me.

Saw that the Cerberus Network message updated. Comm Bouys down for the Alliance News Network. They're coming..... Poor Batarian bastards. How many sets of videos are there on the shadowbroker ship? Seen 3 sets so far.

How do I know if my save from ME1 has carried over to ME2? I chose to import previous character, but when we escaped the space station Miranda kept asking me questions about what decisions I made in Mass Effect 1.

I also didn't seem to get any tangible bonus.

Ashley's a racist pig.

I mean, I still killed Kaidan. Being a racist pig is no reason to die though. Being a fucking bore, however, is a great reason to die. Sorry, Kaidan!

So, I went through the Derelict Reaper earlier today, and it was the first time I was able to complete the last part of it at Core while successfully preventing my squadmates from dying.

Adrenaline Rush + Revenant + Tungsten Ammo > Husk Army

You know, I've played ME1 + ME2 over 10 times combined now and each time I had Ashley take it for the team at Virmire simply because I hated her racist attitude.

But I had to run through ME2 one more time to keep her alive because I'm told her personality changes towards the end of ME1 and she'll probably be a new person in ME3. Plus she looks hot.

I think I fucked up - I just recruited Thane and Im trying to recruit the justicar but Liara is missing; after I finished the shadow broker mission, I still can't recruit the justicar. Am i fucked and wasted time playing?

Use the computer on her desk.

I finished up the game today, starting off at the Reaper, too. Shockwave spam is so broken against husks, lol. I also managed to have a perfect suicide mission run. Everyone but Zaeed died, so I now have two ME2 saves at the opposite ends of the spectrum ready and waiting for March 5th.

So I just finished up Overlord for the first time. Um, Wtf? That was amazing. I seriously have been hearing terrible things constantly about it and literally thought it would be a 10-20 minute Firewalker mission where you collect nodes. It was like an entire new experience that I didn't even touch since launch! What a nice little surprise. Felt good playing some actual content that I haven't done a couple times before, makes me super pumped for ME3.

And nobody told me there was actual EXPLORATION! What the heck. I love that, why can't they do more of it?

Are there even any benefits to not having any members alive from ME2? I mean, you'll get less content wouldn't you?

I don't know, but I want to see how much changes between the two saves. The ME3 demo has Mordin helping you with the female krogan, so I'm curious who replaces him.

Man, the end of ME2 is kinda in sight. All I need to do is get the last three party members, the last story missions, and I'll probably do Shadow Broker post-Suicide Mission along with Arrival. Pretty much doable before ME3 comes out, right?

With that said, I am not looking forward to doing Firewalker, like, at all. The completionist in me wants to get it done, but I only played through it once (and that was on a previous insanity playthrough too...)

Do it for the artifact you find during the Firewalker missions. Considering it's just like ones seen in Mass effect 1 and that it ends up in the Captain's quarters I bet it'll have some effect on 3.

Yea I was curious about this to. And also (ME3 Demo Spoiler)
Wrex is there, so I wonder if you had Wrex die who would replace him? I assumed Grunt. But what if Grunt died? What if you had Grunt, Wrex and Mordin dead -- a whole different set of characters. Haha, what has bioware gotten into.

Just finished my ME1 Insanity run. Was ridiculously easy as a Soldier with Immunity. Never even took cover, only died a couple times. Took about 5 hours. Just need level 60 now and I'll have all the achievements.

Immunity is so broken. I was tempted to use Fortification as my Bonus Power to replace it, but I knew it just wouldn't be the same.

Not really a spoiler, but:
I imagine it would be his brother, Wreave. He's the one that leads the Urdnot if Wrex is killed on Virmire.

That's not even the half of it man. If you don't pick up Wrex in ME1, Wreave kicks him off after he tries to institute his plans. Without you... Wrex is completely marginalized.

Kaidan, apart from being bland, is also such a whiner. Oh no I've got a migraine. Here let me send some Geth your way to end this for you.

Besides, after the council not wanting humans, nobody wanting Krogans, my Shepard killing those Rachni just because they're ugly and those Geth because fuck it organics first, Ashley seems the least offensive racist in all of the galaxy.

Come to think of it... I don't think there is a single other character that has that level of variability in the series. He can either be King, a traitor, or dead.

Hahaha!

I do love this game for that. Some of the differences might be minor, but without them this game would be a shooter with powers.

I loaded up my save file to finish Arrival before ME3, only to find that I haven't done quite a few missions on this file that I want to import :(

Is there any good way to check on your romance status?

I too love how this game throws these themes around so casually. I was replaying Legion's loyalty mission the other night and it makes you choose whether you reprogram the Geth or destroy them. And I was once again blown away what an interesting decision this is, and how it's wholly contingent on the way that you roleplay your character. The Geth in themselves are of course interesting with their hivemind and whether you consider them living beings, but then it's also about having to wrestle with what's more important: life or liberty. It's about whether you think they will be a menace in the future and this justifies ending them now (corrective or vindicative, punishment on something they might do), but then it's also affectively motivated, whether you're on the side of the creators or the slaves, or simply whether your character sympathisizes with the plight of Tali, her people, or not.

It's not just choose your adventure like most RPGs out there, or decision motivated on a single binary distinction. It's the game with the most genuine (meaningful) roleplaying possibilities I've played. And it's in an optional sidequest no less. It also makes me angry when it (ME2 especially) gets flak for not being an RPG.

How'd you manage to have Shepard survive with only one remaining squadmate? I thought you needed two.
