I'm always curious how Apple presents design regressions on stage.

My guess here is they won't comment on thickness at all. if they have to show dimensions, they'll mention them briefly (and not relative to iPad 2) but they'll just shut their mouths otherwise.

No no they are clearly going to go full out, HERE IS WHAT ITS PACKING! RETINA DISPLAY! 25 TIMES THE GRAPHICS! 10 TIMES THE CPU! AS LONG BATTERY LIFE! BETTER CAMERAS! DUAL BACKLIGHTING! MORE MEMORY! UP TO 128GB OF STORAGE! All while only being one inch thicker. * Audience gasp*
 
I'm hoping that they've somehow maintained or marginally reduced the weight, so that they have something positive to say regarding the physical size of the thing. Maybe the thickness bump isn't for bigger batteries, but is for.... something else.

Don't think Apple gives a shit. Not like there's a drastic redesign a la the iPhone 4, nor is it fully assembled unit. The thing will be shown off in less than 2 days, all they'd be doing is putting media attention on something that noone other than tech-blog readers might hear about.

Either way, this seems idiotic for Engadget as it's not even close to worthwhile enough to fuck up their relationship with Apple and get blacklisted over, as what happened to Gizmodo.
 
I applaud Apple for breaking out of the stupid "It needs to be at least 20% thinner" mentality.

Hopefully all the other companies with raging hard-ons for Apple will stop focusing on getting their devices down to 6mm thick from 7mm thick and start to think of battery life.

In other words, I'm jelly of the Razr Maxx
 
I wish you could program Siri to say stuff. Lately in the car I've been addressing her as DJ Siri. Shes not very charismatic.
 
Wondering whether Apple TV gets a design refresh or Apple continues their nearly 2 year long dry period of not a single new industrial design outside iPad 2
 
What about a booble-head affixed to the top of the device which you can tilt and use as a joystick for gaming, breath into for anti-drunk-facebooking measures, and impress friends with how cute and silly Bobby Orr looks when he wiggles his head around endlessly.

Are you insane, they just revealed the iPad 3's complete redesign, you think Cook isn't boiling over right now?

I'd be surprised if the people in those pictures aren't incarcerated for at least 301 days for each photograph they took.
 
I can just imagine all the reviews going something like "but you can't even notice it is thicker when your holding it in your hand."

But yeah it does seem weird that Apple would increase the thickness, especially since one of the design points in the ipad 2 they emphasized was how much thinner it was the the first one. They must have something up their sleeve.

The lack of protection for the back of the iPad was prevented me from buy the Smart Cover. I'll definitely buy one for the iPad 3 if they include rear protection.

There are plenty of rear covers...

If they're going to offer a Smart Cover with rear protection, it'll probably be very similar to all the third party rear covers that support the Smart Cover anyway...

unless its Helium, it's going to be heavier than before

still probably thinner/lighter than ipad 1, so I'm happy

edges are thinner, so if they mention anything they'll mention that. Otherwise they'll entirely ignore it and just focus on retina and how it makes things look better than reality

The high res panel floating about is reported to be slightly lighter than iPad 2's panel... who knows... there may be ways of maintaining the weight.
 
I'm willing to bet money that the iPad 2 and 3 will have the same thickness. How? While the rear shell will be thicker the glass will be thinner so when they are both side to side they will effectively be the same thickness. Take a look at some of the side by side shots shown so far, it looks like the rear shell is larger but the glass is noticibly thinner.
 
With a new high resolution display do you think they will miss the original price point? Also can we get a single version of the iPad just like the iPhone. I tired of all this wifi+3g , wifi stuff. We all can dream.

Stuff the mobile radio into all of them and keep the wifi price point... I know it sounds crazy.

I think the premium on the 3G radio actually makes sense on the iPad because of the sweet ability to have contractless access whenever you need it. Not having to lock yourself in to a 2 year deal, but be able to flick on the internet if you need it seems like an incredible thing to have at your fingertips.

I tether from my iPhone via the AT&T plan when I need it, but without that I'd be all over one of the 3G models. If they release the iPad with 4G I'm not sure what I'll do...

The rear shell without glass in appears to be already thicker than an iPad 2, so I shall take you up on that bet.

I'll be fine as long as they justify it. If they say that they had to make it slightly thicker to jam a huge ass battery in there to allow the thing to run as hard as it does and still get the same amount of battery life, I'll take it.

Hell...maybe the battery life will be improved?! Is that even a realistic expectation?!

No, we don't. Tim Cook has been repeatedly fucking up. First the dud that was the 4S and now a physically thicker iPad 2S--with the same damn design again. It's like he's prevented Jony Ive from doing anything now that Steve is gone. Resting on their laurels will make Apple the next Microsoft.

Even iPhone 4 had more than Retina, they added a front camera, gyroscope, better back camera, new antennae, micro-sim etc.

There must be more than that 5-megapixel back camera, Retina display and Dual Core A5X processor.

I know it sounds like I'm nitpicking and not satisfied, but I'm just excited for the reveal and the product itself. I'm hoping for FaceTime HD camera, LTE 4G (won't be supported in Denmark which is crap) and Siri, neither will happen.

No chance. This is for iPad 3 and an eventual Apple TV3.

I got an Apple TV2 at Christmas, so if I'm gonna go get an Apple TV3, then it got to have an App Store or something amazing. But it'll be an incremental update with 1080p HD.
 
If LTE is go, I expect FaceTime over cellular to be a go as well.

The iPad already has a front camera, a gryroscope and micro-sim. Assuming they add a retina display and Siri then wouldn't it have all the features of the iPhone 4s?
