Pad HD launch is a big deal, says Dyson
Exclusive: A good time to excite both consumers and workers

Apple iPad 3 launch - a big deal

The Apple iPad HD launch event is a massive deal for the company, according to Sir James Dyson, who explained the importance of making a big splash when you unveil your latest products.

Speaking exclusively to TechRadar ahead of the iPad 3/iPad HD launch, Dyson, whose own company puts great efforts into launches, believes that events are not just an opportunity to make your vision clear, but also to keep morale high internally.

"I think, with any new product, it's about explaining what you've done and what it is about," said Dyson. "A launch is a very god place to do that.

"I don't expect Steve Jobs wanted to spend too much time doing PR, so past launches were obviously a very good time to do it.

"It also allows you to excite your own employees. One of the big problems with developing new technology is that you can't tell everybody in the company about it while you are doing it, so the moment to tell them is when you launch.

"So it's very important both internally and to tell the world what you are trying to do with it.

"Obviously it's a commercial launch, but it's a little bit more than that because when a new product comes out it's the time that the public want to know about it."
Apple fan

Dyson is a confirmed fan of Apple products, having splashed out on an early Jobs computer, and has Macs, an iPhone and an iPad.

More exclusive news just got in: Water is wet!

Industry sources tell me that the next iPad will be called iPad 2x, x is for xtreme
I can't tell if you're joking...cause they have used "Extreme" a few times for products, and still do. If nothing else I wouldn't be surprised at all if the A5X is officially "A5 Extreme".
I'm sad there's no talk of a better front camera. I imagine an iPad is used more for video calling than taking photos. =(
FaceTime HD wouldn't surprise me. They have the small cheap HD camera in the iPod touch (rear), and it would go right along with the whole rumored "iPad HD" name.
Regarding Apple's consistent product design, I don't think they need to change everything every year but it would have been really nice of they updated the iphone design by at least making it bigger. It feels tiny compared to most other smartphones.
Anyone remember that the iPhone was considered huge when it came out?
Usually it depreciates if the announcement isn't that great, honestly, at this point I don't see how they're not going to knock iPad 3 out of the park. Even if all they do is Retina, LTE, A5X, it's going to be BIG.
Well there's a few things. Right now could be a controlled run up (since "nice new iPad" is a semi given and probably priced into the stock already) and a bunch of people may sell while it's high. Even some unknown wacky new awesome (to us) feature is revealed it might not really matter if some mystery wildcard is expected. The other part is the greater economy, the whole market got hit today and AAPL went down as well. If they managed to pull off some major content/provider deal it could have an impact. It can all go either way.
I always wonder how Apple claimed that they had Multi-Touch patented to death and now it's ubiquitous with touch interfaces on all devices. Are they licensing it out everywhere or did they not patent it well enough? I remember the gesture lawsuits back in the day, but I'm guessing the tech itself isn't proprietary in any respect.
Not licensed and from everything I've read they have no interest in licensing it...not sure how that works with MS and Nokia* whom they've done patent cross licensing deals with, but for the other major players they're definitely not licensed. That said patents take time to actually get approved (like they just got granted a few from back then just recently), and they're funky beasts. Others may have gotten legitimately around them with different techniques, like the result may be multi touch for different stuff but the implementation may be the key part and be completely different for all we know.

*Samsung and Moto/Google are probably trying to come to the same result but the patents they're challenging with are mostly for official standards, which are weaker (cause legally they have to license them) and not of use to Apple...except perhaps one (non standards based one) so far involving iCloud in Germany.
Worst case scenario for the thread will be if it's dual core, honestly. They will come in droves listing the numerous superior quad core phones in the pipeline.
I'll be disappointed if it's less than 1.5ghz*, dual or quad. Hell with more cores unless they're also significantly faster.

*Unless they've managed to make the first mainstream A15 months before anyone else. Or perhaps this stuff is done and provides a boost.

But when we talk about FaceTime we talk about the front facing camera. That needs to be HD.

I think that’s what japtor was talking about. they could use a tiny camera like the one used on the back of the iPod touch and stick it in the front of the ipad. size shouldn’t be a problem.

I definitely expect them to do this.

shitty video quality will look even worse on this nice screen than it does now on the regular ipad screen (and the video does look pretty damn crappy if you’re shooting indoors)

ICS and Windows 8, while kinda nice right now, will look super dumb in 2-3 years.

iOS, while not flashy and admittedly a little stale, still has more class and lasting power than any of the other OSs out there design wise.

Kinda like comparing a 2011 Ford to a 2007 Mercedes.

I don't think so. At least with W8. It's the simpliest and cleanest looking OS around. There's nothing to age there.

Yep. And really, 720p...isn't that big of a deal these days if you think about it. Hell I forgot the iPad already has 720p on the rear.
Was it? It was smaller than most smartphones at the time...
Footprint appeared to be similar to the larger end, so yeah in line with other smartphones:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/apple-iphone-sized-up-and-compared-to-treo-750-moto-q-and-bb-p/
But otherwise I remember hearing stuff like this:
http://ipod.about.com/od/30dayswithiphone/a/13_iphone_30day.htm

I think the main thing is comparing to smartphones, just cause not nearly as many people had them back then. They were generally pretty chunky vs regular phones. "Only 30% bigger" is a pretty big difference, like a 30% bigger iPhone screen would be 4.55", iPad would be 12.6".

And I found this while looking for that stuff, not sure I ever saw it before:

I think it is the chrome-less-est OS, and that could be considered as clean. However I don't think it is ageless. There's a parking lot I frequently walk past downtown, and all it says is "Parking", but I know *exactly* when it was made, the font, layout, spacing of the characters, its location, everything about it screams late 70's. I'm not going to claim one interface/style has more staying power than another - I don't know, only time will tell, however I do know that text is not impervious to time, especially when that text has all sorts of cropping issues.

WP7/ W8 Metro is clean and looks good but it will age. the way oversized typography is used to navigate is very... "designery". plus the mostly monochrome tiles. It's a design that stands out so much that it can't help but look to be from a specific time.

I like it. but it's not ageless.

Agreed - if anything 'dates' that interface, it'll be Microsoft's use of Segoe WP. I love the way the font looks in motion with the interface (in the videos I've seen), but, like Tahoma, it's definitely a font geared for on-screen use. It doesn't look great on the printed page. As PPIs get higher (oh noes, PPI in a WP7 topic!) for WP7 devices, Segoe WP may begin to look a bit too garish and chunky for that interface.

Many app store use HD to signify an ipad app already. What are they going to do if the ipad 3 is called the ipad HD? are you going to have 'cut the rope HD HD'?

I don't see the point in using HD, unless to point out the retina screen. But they didn't use iphone HD. They've been happy using numbers so far, not sure why they'd change now?

Holy shit.

Don't forget the rest

This guy is a genius.

If this isn't a first class Onion article, I don't know. If it wasn't Techradar, I'd say it's a parody about the state of blogging.

WTF!! That's Sir James "mother fuckin'" Dyson talkin'!!!

wouldn't a front camera have been outed by now with all the components being leaked?

I feel like there are too many camera modules being used in iMacs, MacBooks, iPods, iPhones, and iPads to know exactly if one specific one is going to be used in the iPad. If they use the 3GS camera for it, the manufacturer might not even know that they're sending them over to Foxconn for use as the iPad front camera, as opposed to the 3GS back camera. This would apply to all Apple cameras. I think it's easier to leak the next-gen iPhone's camera because it will always be the new, best of the line model being bought by Apple.

OP slowly getting updated with LiveBlog direct links as they are creeping up.

Found The Verge and gdgt so far.

Edit: Adding TWiT because they'll have their live show.

From another forum group talking about ATV.

we were told today at work yesterday they are getting an all cnc'd aluminum case

Nice if true.

Steve's keynotes. Best keynotes.

Tim Cook just doesn't have the same stage presence and he knows it. Must be damn hard walking on that stage knowing every time you do so you'll be compared to a one in a trillion genius.

Maybe "RETINA" will be the tag for iPad 3 apps.

ehhh. The best thing about the ATV2 is that it's so tiny. I don't really care what colour it is or what it is made of, as long as it doesn't get any bigger. Actually, I'd like it to get smaller. And 2W is a lot of power usage, couldn't they get it down to 1? 0? Ideally the AppleTV would have a solar panel on it and it'd actually be a net producer of energy.

So how soon after announcement are these available to be purchased? Gonna pick up my first iPad as soon as I can after the this announcement.

No one knows at this point...but I wouldn't be shocked if they were available as quickly as this Friday. I really don't think Apple wants to incite a riot with a "AND YOU CAN GET THESE RIGHT NOW, FUCKERS!" and watch everyone maul each other.

Rumours are that iPad [3/HD/Retina] are already on the way to shops.

If it's this Friday, that would be incredible. I want to believe. I could see Cook saying "and you can preorder iPad 3 TODAY"

BOOM.

So we still good on the quad core rumors? Or leaning more towards updated dual?

I vote that everyone sets their expectations to "Updated Dual-Core". If it's more then that than we can all squeal like school-girls.

Also: I'm pretty sure there isn't going to be any kind of pre-order system for iPad/AppleTV. As far as I can remember it's always been "line up or get fucked" for these non-contract devices.

Nothing will ever top Steve's iPhone keynote. It was just bonkers, and even EDGE 2G and crap pricing couldn't stain it.

So many great moments that seem pedestrian now, but were earth-shattering in 2007:

- Full, properly rendered New York Times website. The full Interwebs on a phone!
- Touchscreen cover flow was just gorgeous, useless as it was (and still is)
- Threaded SMS (not sure if BB had already done this, but this was huge for me, as even my high-end Nokia at the time had separate Re: folders for everything)
- Beautiful mail with in-line images
- Google Maps satellite view...in your pocket

Even without the App Store and Siri, iPhone still seems like it's from the future.

If you already had a smartphone at the time, there was little incentive to get excited, as your device was already running a functional equivalent of iOS 3 and had 3G. Multitouch and Safari were mindblowing, though.

Palm was more-than-likely the first to bring threaded SMS. Long before iOS, anyway.

You're joking. I had a Samsung Blackjack smartphone running Windows Mobile when the iPhone was announced, and it was incredibly exciting. The section where he talked about how shitty other smartphones were, it was like he was talking to me.
