Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

Most players don't care about the growth of this game. The fact that it's as popular as it is today is testament to what a great game it is, that it would continue to draw so many players in despite how mind numblingly awful the community is.

And intentionally feeding because people are trash talking you (general you, not personal you) puts you on the same level as the trash talkers. Worse, probably, because words don't affect the game, while intentional deaths do.

Also, known trash talkers you should ignore for the sake of your sanity:
bzm (ilu bro)
Kapura
Neki
that kid is so bad he cant even trash talk right
Congrats on being part of the problem.

I played a inhouse game with Neki once in HoN ages ago, he had like 3 times the amount of deaths as me and just kept blaming me for everything.
sounds like neki LOL
(stay 1600 bro)

A team based game where team work actually matters, yes, yes it does.

DOTA is not a game where you derp around setting up sentries in obvious locations and dying over and over again. Everytime you die, the rest of your team feels your mistake. This is why people get so mad.
People also get mad because they lose some perspective on life. They're playing a fucking video game, first of all. To be specific, they're playing a Beta video game that they already know pairs people of all skill levels together...where no money or award is involved. Where not everyone can be expected to speak...much less speak English. Where plenty of players are newcomers. Armed with that basic information, one would expect better attitudes...or at least a certain amount of nonchalant-ness. Nothing is at stake. Nobody is really dying. Until matchmaking is able to separate skill levels (maybe something like Starcraft II?), everyone needs to learn to chill the fuck out and lighten up. If people can't mange that, perhaps they need to go do some volunteering somewhere so that they can remember what real life is like and why this is not serious business.

Half the time I start a game with "glhf" I get "fuck you" back. You can act like that's normal conduct if you want to, but I'd submit to you that you've been knee deep in a shitty community for too long if you do. Present company excluded, presumably.

There can be fun in losing too. I've been on a recent losing streak and, for the most part, it's sucked. But one game I was Warlock and the only one really getting anything done. Once their Ursa singlehandedly had a fifteen kill lead I knew the game was done.

But I just bantered it up with the opponents, encouraged my team to keep trying and while we only managed to drag it on for twenty more minutes we did manage to take their mid barracks and threaten their ancient before snuffing it.

I get this too. Where is that coming from?

I've spent most of my online gaming in TF2 where matches are way too short for a quick gl/gg, but I wouldn't have expected a negative reaction to it. I only started doing it because my Starcraft friend says it at the start of every game and I thought it was nice.

It's odd because the higher level matchmaking games tend to be a LOT friendlier than the lower level ones. I have never in recent memory had someone say "fuck you" when I said "glhf." Yeah you get the occasional prick, but it's nowhere near as bad as when I was a wee little newbie.

Garbage gonna be garbage forever.

It's all about climbing out of the dumpster.

If Valve can figure out how to make the DOTA2 community stop being dicks, we might as well install Lord Gaben as the King of the Earth and embrace Utopia.

Tribunal is a scratch on the surface.

I have no idea don't quote me on this.

I dunno...I like their approach of putting systems in place to reward good behavior more than to punish bad behavior. Game-ifying positive behavior with the commend system seems like a step in the right direction.

My experience with the commendment system consists of Hyuna going "GIVE ME SOME COMMENDS HALY, I TOTALLY DESERVE IT".

No matter how many systems implemented to report "assholes" and the like, this community will never be like starcraft and it will never be like the IRL fgc for two reasons: You play in 5 man teams, and you play online. You're not in a 1v1 contest where when you lose it is your responsibility alone, and you're not sitting next to your opponents playing the game.

As said many times above, when one player on your team makes a mistake, any mistake, it affects the entire game. Combine this with the blame game, and you get tons of crap being thrown around. Even in the new players' pool this is going to happen, maybe even especially here, because once people get a rudimentary understanding of the game they like to think they know everything about it, are never wrong, and LOVE to pull out the shit talk when someone either doesn't know or disagrees.

There are nicer people too, of course, but realistically there's no good way to filter them without valve individually inspecting replays and recording audio AND risking making a lot of potential customers very angry and unwilling to pay. There isn't any way to ensure that commendations are real, or that reports are real without those two things. If you were to propose that only non-friends could commend, that punishes players who play with friends exclusively, as you probably won't be getting commendations for leadership and instruction from the other team.

There's no reason to get all riled up about it either, press mute and get over it. If it really bothers you that much you should know not to retaliate, only do so if you're looking for a fight. Get better so people don't call you bad as often, and don't be fooled, no matter how good you get people will always call you bad. One guy told Milk he couldn't last hit and that I was a trash player in the same game, for example.

If these people are all such "sub-human trash", be the more evolved creature and deal with it or stop bothering to play.

This works until you get to the point where some guy on your team just sits in fountain, buys donkeys, and feeds them.

swiftlame and i played a game like that once, we won, and ive never seen someone so angry they couldnt lose a game. Easily fed 5-8k in terms of couriers over the whole game

Seems like there are a lot of new guys; I just got my beta key last week. Anyone want to form some kind of group for newbies to play together?

I tried to start a list awhile back but no one participated. Join the neogaf channel in DOTA2 and just ask to get in a game. I did manage to mm with some gaf members and they were pretty chill..

I think they come down particularly hard on courier killers/feeders. Had that happen to me last week sometime and the very next day I got the message that he'd been thrown to the wolves..

Shit talkers are really easy to manage. Shit talk back at them, and eventually they will stop. I'll take assholes over feeders any day. So long as we are playing well, I don't really care how they act. I'm normally playing with some friends anyway.

Report griefers and hope the system works, move on to the next game.

Yup, that's how you do it. The trick is to not let them get under your skin.

I'm curious...what's the team game environment like in SC2? Is it just as hostile as DOTA?

Team games aren't very important in SC2. 2v2 is the only mode that's remotely viable for any serious competition and it's much easier to match up 4 players of similar skill than 10. A bad player is also not feeding the enemies money like in Dota, at worst he'll have a few units that will still help you out. As a result, it's usually a little better than Dota, but the gameplay is also a lot less fun since the game is balanced for 1v1.

So I just got a invite, and I've never really played DOTA. I'm trying to just play solo, or vs bots but the options are not clickable in the menu. I know people bitch if your retarded so I'm trying to learn before I go fucking up other peoples games. Any ideas?

You want to create a private lobby and start the game solo. You can lock the lobby with a password and make it invis to spectators if you like. You'll then have the options to set bot AI levels and such (they will still destroy you), and it should by default add bots to all open slots. There you can get a feel for how the game works. If nothing else, get used to controlling the courier. You don't want to be learning that out in the field, heh.

Speaking of reporting people, wow have I reported so many people for the past few days. All of them are for racist remarks.

Currently playing with a Korean name, and people expect me to carry them rofl. One bad move and man oh man do the ignorant insults just come flying my way. It's not just me though, too many people calling each other n***rs and whatnot.

There are the games where you have a team of nice people who all communicate with voice though (And the ones that don't have mics directly interact thought text chat), and who don't get overly mad at small mistakes.

I played a solo matchmakimg today, teamed up with a player who had 600 wins and everyone on our team idolalized him. I dont know if it was because of him, but everyone on our team was being ultra nice, calling mias like no other, admitting mistakes, it almost felt like another game. Kunkka with divine rapier is pretty cool, one shotting heroes makes you feel like the king.

I would love this. Is there enough people on US East?... Are you on US East?

Just my opinion, but it might be beneficial to have maybe one decent player among a team of newbies. That way, he can commend on things done well and encourage things that could be worked on.

For all new players, don't give up. Use the mute function. Over time, even you may soon start trashtalk other newer players. Its bound to happen, believe it or not. Overall, the only way to improve on Dota 2 is to play this game until your head spins :D

i played with a gez once in hon once too. Zero map awareness and zero semblance of skill, i wonder if you're the same guy

tell me about it. I think I'm going to change my screen name to 'Black Superman' and see how far that gets me. lol.

I like this idea... though if you enter matchmaking, will it look for a team of five at the level of the one good player?

Actually, this gives me an idea. If there are enough new players, would it be possible to have 'inhouse' training? Have one good player on each side to coach a team of newbs? We could even run it in captain's mode if the coaches want to have practice drafting.

procarbine, do you turn off most of the advanced graphic options? trying to stream dota and sometimes there is choppiness but overall it is smooth.

I don't get the point of Lifestealer's ulti.
is that for killing creeps faster?

Hide inside friendly hero/creep, wait for them to be next to an enemy who thinks they are alone (or in a teamfight think it's 5vs4) *bam* out comes lifestealer with explosion damage and suddenly it's 2 vs 1 or 5 vs 5.

Surprise factor plus damage.

Becareful of hiding inside chen's creeps. An LS I fought loved do do that every fight, so chen just ported it back to our base.

Many laughs followed.
